One of the things that really extended/enhanced the life of ET/RtCW was the user-created maps and mods. Has there been any discussion of supporting these kinds of tools this for DB?
Custom Maps & Mods?
Absolutely agree!
No custom maps - max 1 year play of DB for me.
Or is one year enuff for the business model?
Gief SDK and custom map support!
here it’s more game modes/server tweaks than kept me playing ET. I like user maps, but mapping is more & more complex & third-party maps have rarely been nearly as good as original ones (unless the game really sucks to start with).
This said, TC:E had managed to do really great out of ET’s old engine. I see it’s not dead btw (truecombat MWTC?), gonna take another look at it.
If they release new maps for $$$ I would suggest people think away from custom maps / mods. It would, however, create a divide between free/paying customers. So I really hope they do not venture down this road.
It is always nice for the community to pitch in a make some awesome things. I think back to ET some great maps being Venice, 1994_Beach, ET_ICE ect. All turned out to be very popular!
As for mods, Please DO NOT allow mods. One reason I couldn’t get anyone to sart playing ET was because the stupid amount of mods and patches they had and it actually made ET ****. Lets get “mods” as an idea out of peoples minds right now. I am sure SD are capable to making a proMod and pubMod.
as long a mappack hasnt got about 10 maps and costs around 5 bucks, which will never happen I guess^^
there was some operation payback for cs go, maybe SD could do sth similar. You also need something to motivate ppl to do great stuff and to get the stone rolling.
decent map makers could get a credit for their work, either a small amount fee or voluntary donation

I love mods, but hate those minimods where people just edited some pk3 files to screw up the menus. Also installing mods is such a painless experience in ET imo. Just connect and let the client download what it needs and you’re done. It doesn’t get much easier than that!
What I think they could improve it with is show how many files are remaining. Avoid those situations where you’re like “Another one?! $#&$#@!”
Also only allow fast redirect servers or just fast downloading. That’s another thing that I think annoyed people more in ET, if you’re server wasn’t set up right players would download at 10-11kb/s
Apart from that I’m all for mods (think of powerball, ultraet, NQ, Jaymod). As for those minimods that just screwed up your menu, those can go die in a fire.
Custom maps, absolutely!!!
Mods, I can see the arguments for both sides, in general I’m unopinionated on the matter. But if core game is good enough to not require a promod and is well supported as any issues arise then I don’t see the need, which also has the advantage of one larger community rather than several little ones as well as one less barrier to entry.
Select and invite 1-2 of the custom mappers, let them stay in London (all expenses payed), and let them hang out at SD towers, and make one map each.
About mods: potty is telling the truth above.
I agree that installing alot of mods can be a hassle - although if they used steam workshop it wouldn’t.
I think custom maps are much more likely than mod support though. If SD are making money selling new guns/skins/characters then allowing mods (that could potentially add new guns/skins/characters for free) would be silly from a business standpoint.

Couldn’t agree more!
It would be nice if the base game is good enough to make a promod unnecessary for competitive play while still letting people enjoy their public matches. This makes it easier for players to take the step into playing gathers or even joining a clan, instead of having different rulesets for the same game.
One community unified under the same tapir! :stroggtapir:

I wish they did the same for W:ET, everyone would be playing ETmain and it wouldn’t have been so popular :+)
I would love to have mods and custom maps, but custom mods will never happen. Imagine someone making a mod with trick jump / decent movement, who would be playing the normal version of DB? I wouldn’t
Anyway mods will bring way more depth for players / server admins, than SD alone can ever produce.
Just look at Silent mod. It gave server admins tons of cool options, like making voteable maps appear on a list depending on the amount of players that are on the server. If there were a lot of players on your server, only big maps could be voted for, the other way around when there are less people on your server.
Whatever the game is, I usually avoid modded servers as I want to play the game I know, not something else altogether. I don’t have any issues with server-side mods that provide additional admin features, but I like my gameplay the way it’s meant to be, thank you very much (and if that’s not good enough as it is, then time to move on to another game…). If mods are supported in DB, then please let’s have some clear indication of modded servers in the browser and ideally some filtering options as well.
I’m a bit more open-minded when it comes to custom maps, but would still like to see some indication of servers that are running them. And if custom maps are supported, I’d like SD to consider promoting the really good ones to “official” status through regular updates (free updates, of course, as paying for new maps is a guaranteed way to split the community…).

Or link them to google maps and UDK
I doubt I’ll be making any maps if they were allowed for DB, the theme is pretty boring to work with personally and I doubt I’ll have the time to create enough of my own assets of a good enough quality to make something I’d like to.
Take ET:QW, there was so much more you could do with the theme there due to the presence of the Strogg. Was nice to try and augment Strogg tech and such with human buildings as they invaded and was really fun making fully Strogg buildings/maps like Maridia, you could create some really interesting spaces that you just couldn’t really do with a ‘realistic’ theme. It’s a shame SD didn’t make more use of the Strogg theme in their own maps, the Nexus Tower on Slipgate was really awesome.
Also having two really different teams allowed you to create clearly defined front lines marked by the theme of that team, in my own maps where GDF attack, the further you progress into the map the more Strogg structures you see, you know your heading in the right direction and heading up to something climatic. You could do the same in ET with Axis and Allied themed equipment and insignia dotted around forward spawns and objectives. I’ve always liked the idea of attacking an enemy base or strong hold, something you have to breach and then complete whatever objective lies within. You just don’t get that same feeling in DB, or at least the last time I played.
It’s good to see the theme hasn’t deterred others though and that if the tools were released there will be people there ready to take up the challenge, though be nice to see maps outside of London.
Regarding mods, I’d like to see mods such as Powerball, fun deviations from the main game, new game mode on specially built maps separate from the main game. I’d probably make a map or two for such a mod, Powerball was my favourite ET mod.

It’s what I’ve been thinking since day one.
Maybe we can still hope for some plot twist (for factions & locations) to spice things a bit and get onboard more talented mappers like you.
We definitely want to enable mappers to create content for our game. How and when we achieve this is very much undecided right now.
I personally very much like the ‘workshop’ approach some other games are taking.
