Custom Maps & Mods?
We definitely want to enable mappers to create content for our game. How and when we achieve this is very much undecided right now.

I personally very much like the ‘workshop’ approach some other games are taking.
Love workshop and would love to see DB take this approach.

i feel like people forget that etpro was a mod, and the largest/most played, not to mention that supply depot was a custom map and by far the fav in the community. mapping/modding support is an absolute must for any kind of staying power
It’s what I’ve been thinking since day one.
Maybe we can still hope for some plot twist (for factions & locations) to spice things a bit and get onboard more talented mappers like you.
As long as the game is fun and successful I don’t think they’ll have a problem attracting other mappers, also there are a lot of people who already know UDK and unreal that could make some quality maps if they can be enticed.

Pretty sure the various pub mods are larger and more widely played, either way ET was an unfinished game and required fixes, unfortunately the game was ruined by the same thing that first saved it.

Ahh okay so Steam Workshop is just a custom content distribution hub for end users, I thought it was some user friendly map making tools for developers.

(DB Genome editor) #29

Yep. I’m not sure how far the concept goes for other games, but for TF2 Valve also uses it as a source of material for updates. The best submissions are regularly integrated into content updates, added to the store and the authors get a share of the revenues. Apparently some guy in Kansas made over $150K a year from that (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-18996377, towards the end)

well thx to bani, it was “fixed” but i cant say that i agree with the reason that it was ruined. it was ruined by subpar anticheat and a terrible etkey system. ask sponge the amount of work it took to track accounts. he made an entire backend system just to link etkeys with dynamic ip addys

Here is a good example of the Workshop concept:

Seems two cool guys (MoP and Spacemonkey) created a nice character (Blotto) for a game (Dota2), and uploaded it to Steam, for others to download and enjoy.
While you are there, make sure to vote and click Favorite, if you like what you see.
