Custom maps + cl_allowdownload = WTF!

(sniser2) #1

Okay. Maybe this has been talked about already but I couldn’t find it, so sorry.

The problem is, I have never ever have been able to play custom maps on servers. It downloads all the files, then craps out and complains the files (it just downloaded) are missing! I must have tried that dozens of times now since ET is out, on various public servers. I reinstalled ET and even Windows (not because of ET heh :P) - no dice!

To be honest I didn’t even try dowloading them from websites - because hey, it should work, it did in RTCW. I prefer downloading a map currently being played on a server, instead of getting a bunch and hoping to see a server using them. Then again if this is a known problem and it’s the only way I would have to I guess - but in that case I wonder why there is no sticky topic addressing this issue?!

:frowning:

Hello? Anyone? Does that mean it works for everyone else? What could be the culprit then?

The auto download is AWESOME. granted sometimes after its done downloading you have to just exit ET and rejoin- but the map(s) are installed now. I have found it to be an awesome feature to be able to see a new map and within a few clicks it downloaded (FAST 140-200KB/s) AND installed. Coming from the days of q2 when downloading a map and textures models ect could take well - along time. and if ya downloaded from a site ya had to move the .bsp to maps, .pcx to there, models to there, yada to bula. what a mess. Reminds me of the look on the guys face at the local computer store when i put a zip drive on the counter to buy it- he asks what i need it for- “to open .zip files I say” he is still laughin…

Ahhh. and with auto download on… uh… use at own risk…an unscrupulous server could download chocolate chip cookies or something worse.

If it says the file has the wrong chingasa in the error box after the download- Open up etmain and delete(or move) that file and redownload it

:skull:

Autodownload sometimes crashes for me, and works at other times. Be sure to allow www redirects as well. If it fails, I suggest going to a site like www.rtcwfiles.com and downloading the map from there.

As I said, I want to get it to work too. It works for downloading campaigns and etpro etc… Since it never worked since ET is out, on no computer of 3, I kinda assumed a lot of people having that problem :???:

I cant say ive had that much of a prob,a lot of times the map iam downloading from a server will cut out but eventually u get um,ive got a few from sites as well and once there in the ET main no prob.
Sometime though u can get lucky with the downloads I know a few servers now what give 320k a sec from there servers I get maps in seconds instead of the usual 7 to 10 k a sec wich can be terrible.

(sniser2) #7

I can download too, that’s not the problem… but no matter how many files it downloads (from 0% to 100%) I never seem end up with stuff in my etmain folder?!

(Sauron|EFG) #8

Weird. And you’re not using a restricted user account?
Do a search on your HDD to make sure they don’t end up someplace else.

(sniser2) #9

Nope, no .pk3 files anywhere.

(RivrStyx) #10

If its a download straight from the server with no redirect …it will probably crash you on things likes maps.

The redirect seems to work pretty well… i haven’t had any problems getting maps as long as the server uses this.

If you see them downloading…they’re going somewhere…

If crashing during the download you probably have some <mapname>.pk3.tmp files around. Need to delete those.

Turn on show hidden files.

go here: www.google.com type in:
show hidden files XP help

use 98 if ya using 98 instead of XP ect…

yeah the whole download system is a bit buggy, but still a great feature (specially redirect)

the problem is too much pk3’s is bad for your ET
delete all mapcycle files once in a while, and maps you don’t like/play
