As a fairly new alpha player, I agree with a lot of the criticism in here, but I also disagree with many of the points raised. Some of them don’t even seem to have anything to do with game design; like ImageOmega complaining that the players are chasing frags instead of playing for the objectives – you can’t force the players to play in a certain way, that’s up to the players.
My personal experience with the game so far is that it has some interesting elements, in particular the aspect of having many different unique mercs that the players can choose between, sort of like an fps take on Dota (although I don’t think the current half-way class based and half-way character based approach is particularly good – there’s no need to have classes when you can just create unique mercs instead, all it does is place constraints on your merc design). I also think the gunplay shows promise, assuming it will be further refined.
What I don’t like, is the short and seemingly random spawn times, the non-stop medic revive spam and the moving spawns. Meatgrind is the word that best describes the gameplay these mechanics create. Combine that with the nature of the objectives (escort in particular) and map design, and you have a very unrewarding game: When I’ve just killed three guys, I don’t want to see the medic I just killed 20 seconds earlier revive them all while I’m reloading. Most games unfortunately seem to be decided by which team has the most medics, which makes for pretty sad gameplay. I don’t like the basic premise of the objective game mode either, especially with moving spawns. I honestly struggle to find much tactical or strategic play to this game mode, since the moving spawns and fast spawn times makes any clever play (anything that doesn involve camping at the objective or rushing straight towards the objective…), as defenders who circle around the attacks get killed by respawners from behind and attackers who try to move around carefully will find the defending team respawned by the time they get there.
I do think the game has a lot of promise, though, and there should be a sizeable market for a good competitive fps game at this point. Hopefully the devs will be able to sculpt it into stomething more than just an ET-like with some Dota mechanics strapped onto it.
