Actually, Enemy Territory is much more RPG game than, say, Diablo2. Diablo2 is an arcade-collector game with minor RPG elements. Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory IS a Role-Playing Game compared to Diablo2. You pick up a role/class and are expected to behave in a certain way; in Diablo, you just select your weapons and kill stuff.
From wikipedia:
A role-playing game (RPG) is a type of game where players role-play by assuming the role of a character in a fictional story. (…)
Gameplay progresses according to a predetermined system of rules and guidelines, within which players may improvise freely. Player choices shape the direction and outcome of role-playing games. Role-playing games are typically more collaborative and social than competitive. A typical role-playing game unites its participants into a single team that adventures as a group.
Now tell me these sentences don’t fit to Wolfenstein:Enemy Territory. You assume a role of an engy and are supposed to blow some kind of Axis Fuel Dump. There are certainly some rules limiting your behaviour, but you can sit in spawn all the time if you want. This brings us to next point - if you don’t care about the bridge, but repair tank over and over instead, the outcome is failure for your team. And then there’s teamplay.
I’m sober, and deadly serious. Diablo2 is not a RPG game, Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory is. Deus Ex is a RPG game, too.Fallout is a RPG Game. We should stop calling arcade games like Diablo ‘RPG’ just because they have swords and dragons.
