Cross-version CD-keys??

(Roxor) #1

Ok, I tried to preorder from one of the UK shops but they don’t support my country, so I just preordered one from italy and AFTER that I noticed I get the italian version. So what I would REALLY REALLY REALLY like to know, from one of the devs, if possible, is if I will be able to install an ENGLISH version and then use the ITALIAN cd key?

Thank you!

(CodE-E) #2

I don’t think it’ll be a problem.

C’mon, you have a least 1 month to prepare yourself learning italian…

Thanks Icecube, but I know italian, it’s just that I’ve seen some games with Italian voiceovers and menu/hud titles and it feels so awkward I couldn’t bare to play it.

So please, if anyone could confirm for me weather CD keys work on all languages, that would be like lifting a rock off my heart.

Thanks

Guess you can just set what language to be installed, or maybe it has only english as language supported.

When i saw the title i have a quastion here as well: Could an Windows version key be used for a linux version? I am a linux beginner and don’t think of buying a linux version in case it goes terribly wrong, I know what i am doing in windows… Would be cool to try it under linux with the same key.

The German version of Quake 4 had different assets than the English version and could only be played against other German clients. I don’t think SD is so stupid that they would do a thing like that with a MP only game, but considering Q4 is also an id/ACTV game it would be nice to have confirmation that all versions of ETQW will be compatible.

(Domipheus) #7

Its not about whether they want to or not, they are tied down with all the laws in Germany. Tis nothing about stupid decisions.

(Sauron|EFG) #8

There usually isn’t a separate Linux CD/DVD with id games afaik, you just copy some files from the Win32-CD/DVD and download the Linux binaries (in case they weren’t included).

That may be the reason they had different assets yes, but that doesn’t mean they had to prevent different language versions from playing with each other. It may have required some additional work, but could possibly have given the game a longer shelf life.

(Roxor) #9

I sure hope they allow the cd keys to work with everyone. It would be logical because if you were stuck with a single-language community, even if you want that version, it would really, really suck.

Please devs answer us!

For the amount of effort it’s probably not worth it.

I know…sometimes the voiceovers translations are so ugly that also we italians can’t bare them!!
I hope for you that the version will be european multi-linguage, whit all the major languages in the same dvd…

Germany has some stupid laws regarding violence in video games. Basically, violent 18+ games like Quake aren’t allowed to be sold (even importing them is hard, apparently) over there. I don’t know about Quake 4, but I remember Half-Life got a special Germany edition made where all the blood was green instead of red, implying that all the baddies were just aliens or something and not human, so that the game could pass those lame laws. If Quake 4 in Germany also has some gore modifications, maybe that’s why they can’t play against other clients.

Ok, I just got again in contact with the people at the Italian retailer, and they said that they send packages with gadgets INCLUDING the keycode via regular mail very soon!

That means that if I don’t find out soon enough will the italian version have english packs OR if the italian key will work on english installations, I might have just thrown 60 euros out of the window since I probably won’t be able to cancel the order once they ship me the extra stuff.

:frowning:

(Sir. Darth_Master) #14

I’m pretty sure that it will work.

(Sauron|EFG) #15

Maybe not, but fragmenting the European player base could mean it’s not worth getting the game for some people (or that they have to import the English version), so confirmation from the people who knows would be nice.

(And I’m not only talking about the German version.)

(Roxor) #16

Yes, I’d appreciate it very much. I’ve sent a mail to activision support but no answer yet :frowning:

(Roxor) #17

Bump. Devs please answer me, you gotta know these technicalities as the game is almost finished… come on, I, like most others are a customer and I deserve to know it, instead I’m getting ignored all over the place…

(Nail) #18

Activision would be the ones to ask

(Bongoboy) #19

Your faith in our knowledge and power is touching, but misplaced. I can’t think of a good reason why CD Keys would be linked to SKU’s, but it’s not our decision, nor do we decide which languages are on which SKU’s in which territories. As soon as we know for sure, we’ll tell you.

That’s not correct. There are many games 18+ and they can be sold like ervery other game in the stores too. (like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for example).

But there’s an aditional “rating” wich is called “Indiziert”. If a game got this rating it could be sold to people older than 18, but the stores aren’t allowed to show it in the shelves or to advertise that they sell the game.

And importing is no problem. I ordered at Game.co.uk because of the preorder bonus.
