CPU usage goes up to 99% after 30min in game -> leads to awful lags -> restart only option?

(phila_delphia) #1

Hi!

Since the PATCH that introduced PHANTOM I experience the following issue.:

After about 30minutes in game my CPU usage goes up from 40% to about 99%.

This process takes about 20 minutes. At the end even my sound will crash

and I have to restart the game to get stable FPS again.

Unfortunately I do not find any chance to reduce the usage (which causes major lags).

As you will surely understand this is am big letdown - especially in stopwatch or comp matches.

Here is a log file, that i made on an empty server. The problem is reproducable

Please help me!

Best regards

Have you set all of your graphic qualities to “Low”? If this fails, attempt to use a better resolution, disable any extra running programs using Task Manager, hell, shut down any browsers or anything else you may have running. You shouldn’t need to restart to get stable FPS again. If you continue to have problems, its likely because your computer is overloaded and doesn’t have the memory space or the RAM to handle the game.

Have you looked via task manager/msi afterburner etc and seen that when the usage hits 100% that it’s Dirty Bomb in processes causing it? It could be another background process. Possibly steamwebhelper instead or some other program interfering.

I can barely get DB to use 20% sounds like your install is messed up if it is DB using 100%. :stuck_out_tongue:

It you have modified config try going back to defaults (delete/rename them and it will recreate defaults on launch)
If that fails a verify/reinstall might be a fix.

Hi there and thank you for the hints. Unfortunately…

1.) …it dont matter if I use HIGH or LOW settings.
2.) …I don`t have any extra processes running.
3.) …I get this curious CPU usage with regular AND modded HUD.

Addition to 1.)
I tried different settings. From HIGH to LOW + even an EXTRA LOW config, but to no effect on the issue that (for me was introduced with the patch).

Addition to 2.)
At first I had a backgroundprocess running that was a littel more demanding indeed, but it did not borther me before the patch as my CPU usage in general is not abvoe 20-30%. Now with this problem I shut everything superficial down, but I do not get better results. The usage goes after 3-4 matches no matter what I do.

Addition to 3.)
As I use a modded HUD I was affraid that it messed up the performance. Yet a clean install did not change a thing. The issues remained the same.

I was thinking about a memory leak but in this case many others should suffer the same effect which is not the case…

Guys I really need your help!

I loged what occurs during game to a file via Afterburner.

This shows how the CPU usage slowly increases until it reaches 100%

While the FPS drop to until I have a slideshow.

In the end even my sound card will crash…

Please hav a look at this file: https://app.box.com/s/gz1mkoxuohgol6cwmft5l9zwvp8pvqu4

What CPU do you have? Btw are you on Windows 10?

(phila_delphia) #8

Hi!

As mentioned in the starting post I use an i7-4710HQ.

My OS is win 8.1 64bit.

Not really a genius in these kind of things but could it be a driver issue of your processor?

(phila_delphia) #10

Hm… As DB is the only programm that shows this issues (and only since phantom introducong patch) i guess not

Here is an other log file, that i made on an empty server. the problem is reproducable

I experience the EXACT same issue after a round of stopwatch or if i stay in the lobby of an objective the second round i play i get sound distortion and fps drops from 80-120 to 23-55

(phila_delphia) #12

Thank you so much! I tought I was all alone…

Does not make it better for you but perhaps someone will look into it.

P.S.: Also your impression that the game starts to drop in FPS in the secound round stopwatch matches with my log. After about 30 min the FPS start dropping. In fact I have to restart after ever game to be able to play without lags.

(RadicalMac) #13

AFTER your FPS drops lower, open your task manager and check how much memory is used up for this process: System

(Silverdagger) #14

I monitor ram usage though MSI afterburner while in game and it increases from 3,6 GB (normall gameplay) to ~3.9-4.1 (extremely laggy gameplay) also frame times become attrocious like 130-220 MS :frowning:

(phila_delphia) #15

The process “system” uses 0.1 MB and 0.4% of the CPU at the point the frames are really low.

Alright, that’s good I guess. It does mean you aren’t having memory leakage. I was having that a while back and the longer I was on my pc/longer I was in-game, it would gain more and more in used memory and then lag pretty much everything. The most it had gotten up to was 3,000,000 K.

Hi RadicalMac! Thank you very much that you care!

It’s possible your junk is overheating and throttling its clock speed. The motherboard can force the CPU to throw false overheat warnings to cool off overheating VRM’s as well. One of the ways you can check if something is overheating, is to use a program like CoreTemp for the CPU temp, and MSI Afterburner for the GPU temp. Also, open Resource Monitor (Task Manager > Performance Tab > Resource Monitor) and take a look at the CPU graph in there. It has a blue line referred to as “Maximum Frequency” that indicates CPU clock speed. If you notice this dropping below 100% during gameplay then its throttling back the CPU for whatever reason. CoreTemp may report spikes to 300*C at times if the motherboard is overheating and forcing the CPU to throttle back. I’ve never seen an Intel machine do this, but i’ve had buddies on AMD rigs who’ve been plagued with the motherboard issue. Perhaps one of these issues could be your problem as well?

(phila_delphia) #19

The idea is good - but unfortunately my “junk” is not overheating. I checked this first, but of course you are right to ask about it as I did not mention it in the starting post.

Anyhow the files I logged with MSI Afterburner and which I uploaded in this thread (care to have a look above) cleary show that the cpu temp seldomly exceeds 65 °C.

Ah, i see. Did you check the Maximum Frequency graph in Resource Monitor? Really i was more interested in what that showed, rather than heat. I just wanted to explain my reasoning for asking.
