CovOps far too easy to spot

([GORE]Hallelujah) #1

… erm, it’s all actually very well written and discussed already.
Just don’t want to repeat it all again:

Better go and check this thread here:

I totally agree with what ppl say. In Quake1-based Team Fortress (where the CovOps class originally hails from) - the Spy class was randomly picking one of your teammates’ name (though sometimes it was funny to see someone suspiciously sneaky while crosshair was giving your own name when you pointed at him). So, the Q1 TF spy ruled, as the only thing giving him away was inability to shoot guns while undercover (he instantly lost his disguise then). In all other cases you could like fight shoulder to shoulder with this bastard being totally unaware who he was.
Meanwhile the fucker was doing his dirty job

The rest you’ll read in the aforementioned thread.

I didn’t read the thread u mentioned, but just to make sure:

In ET, it shows the name of the poor bastard the uniform was taken from. If u check it closer it doesn’t show any name, but on a distance(not so far) it shows a team mates name.

So, the Q1 TF spy ruled, as the only thing giving him away was inability to shoot guns while undercover (he instantly lost his disguise then).

Same in ET. I hardly ever play as a covert, but I think unsilenced weapons can be fired without giving the disguise away. Lvl4 Field Ops can detect disguised cov ops. Check the game manual or the excelent RTCW 4 dummies. :moo:

(I think u knew these already)

(Brinkman) #3

i disagree, ti’s good how it is…

it’s easy to notice covert ops because they dont blind in…

gee why is this guy constantly looking at me and following me around?

why isn’t he running towards the objectives?

people make it so obvious

(Kuroshi) #4

Heh. I’ve been thinking that one of the biggest problems with them is that they’re so obvious about running towards objectives. The wrong ones, mind you.

(talkslow4me) #5

in campaign mode u got propably half the other team with the over abused field ops. And now these high lvl field ops can spot any spy. so by the 3rd mission cov. ops is useless.

Plus what up with tha silenced machine gun. It has no perks. If its going to overheat b/c its silenced, at least make the gun REALLY silenced, plus make it so it doesnt shoot any tracers plus no muzzle flash. That way it has a purpose.

(GrumpyDog) #6

LOL, Brinkman, so true. I play a medic and I run into a lot of spies in the backfield. I find that the best way to spot one is run over and just stare at them for a while. It really unerves them, and they end up not doing anything staring back nervously or just kind of wander around. This is especially fun when there are enemy shooting nearby they can’t shoot at them, they just stand there like an idiot or run away from the action. Sometimes I’ll follow them quietly to see what they’re up to. Remeber, they will always wait for your back to be turned to shoot.

Just look at their weapon, silly.

A disguised covops will be usually be brandishing the wrong type of gun for their class. Unless they took another covops uniform, or they are using a knife or pistol (unsilenced), that’s the easiest way to tell…

And even then, if you see a dude running around your base with a pistol/knife, and he isn’t yelling for ammo (no icons overhead)… he’s either a n00b or a spy, I say blast him anyway, just to be sure.

“And even then, if you see a dude running around your base with a pistol/knife, and he isn’t yelling for ammo (no icons overhead)… he’s either a n00b or a spy, I say blast him anyway, just to be sure.”

Or a solider with a heavy weapon, running with a midget gun out to save time.

I’ve never understood why just putting the big gun away is supposed to make you run faster, hehe.

(Cyber-Knight) #9

then I guess you aren’t doing a very good job being a covert ops. do a better job blending in.
I rack up tonnes of knife kills when I play covert ops. It’s my main source for dual pistol acquisition when I play covert ops.

(SmokeyTarget) #10

We certainly could do with some better CVOps, just to make the game more fun. Most can be spotted as mentioned earlier in this post by: giving them a good glaring at to unnerve them; or of course the big sten; lurking with obvious intent in suspicous places; walking around friendly territory trying to blend in whilst staring through their binoculars; wearing my uniform :disgust: .

Having said that of course there are some very good ones out there, congratulations to you and thanks for the hours of mayhem you cause.

To all the rest of you, keep those bin’s away and that sten/rifle stowed, you may live a bit longer behind enemy lines…

When I get going as a Covert Ops I am pretty freaking unstoppable. I almost always use the sniper rifle and I always will go for enemy covert ops so I can steal their pants (only time I feel safe from the good players is when I got enemy covert ops pants on.) And since I have a sniper rifle, it allows me to run away from up close fights and get behind the enemy(even though I am good with it upclose also). The best way to make the enemy think you are one of them is to get your team to shoot at you and move towards them backwards. If you aren’t looking at them they aren’t as suspicious.

And if anyone starts stareing at me for longer then they should be, I shoot them in the face and take their pants.

I think I’ll right a little covert ops manual thingy in a bit…

I’ve seen some really stupid covert ops, and some incredibly good ones too.

A few days ago I was on a server playing Oasis, as Axis. We had been playing together for probably an hour or more from the previous campaign, so we were kicking serious ass. The old city was still ours after a considerable period of time into the map. The wall was of course not breached, and the caves were flooded at all times. We were having a field day making a mockery out of the Allied troops, when suddenly we heard the announcer yell, “North Anti-Tank gun destroyed!” We were all like, “WTF??!” and we rushed back to defend the other gun. Turns out it was a great peice of teamwork on the Allies’ side. A covert op opened the team door for an engineer as we were too busy blowing away their well timed distraction.

We did end up winning that battle, but it was pretty incredible how they took out one of our guns without us even knowing they were there.

(Emon) #13

Oh, and yes, the stare that most stupid covert ops do gives them away. A good covert op won’t ever look at someone unless they isolate them and are sure they can kill them. Of course this teammate then SPAMs “Enemy in diguise!” but if the covert op is good enough, the other teammates will never know where to look.

And not just the stare. It’s the fact that they are close, and while they are close their name is not drawn, and they stare. Despite the fact that I am often one of the highest ranking and highest scoring players on my team or even in the game sometimes, I rarely tag along with other people. I often get the Ain’t Go No Friends Award, too.

It’s one thing to be teaming up with a field op as a medsoldat (teehee), I do that often in Radar as Axis during 6 map campaigns. By that point my rifle skills are way up and my teammates recongize me as one of the reasons why our enemy hasn’t stormed our entire side of the map yet, so I usually have a Field Op near me that dools out ammo as he calls airstrikes (I’m referring to the bridge area).

However, I often find guys tagging alongside me for no reason. If they aren’t withing name rec range, I consider… Who are they, do they frequently follow me? Nope, not this one. Do they need health? Nope, he’s full. Why isn’t he going toward our objective? Then when he gets closer it’s really obvious who he is. I mean sometimes I’m right next to and even stare at covert ops and am totally clueless, but they don’t stick to me like a nametag. During the heat of battle I rarely think about the guy’s name, so I usually never look.

(SmokeyTarget) #14

Good advice, if however you can’t steal a CVops uniform, pay attention to what uniform you have stolen, if a Field Ops, you have a better chance of getting away with checking for mines (assuming you are looking in the correct direction of course) and for God’s sake try and stay far away from enemies of the same (alleged) class as you - you will have one of their names (a dead give-away).

(Emon) #15

Yeah, disguising yourself as a field op while Axis makes it easy to steer clear of Allied field ops, due to skin color.

(KingJackaL) #16

Interesting…

…haven’t you guys noticed that enemy C-ops NEVER SHOW ON EITHER YOUR COMPASS OR COMMAND MAP?

So if there are 3 guys near you, and 2 little symbols on your compass - throw some slugs in the 3rd dude’s head - he’s a C-ops.

This doesn’t work well when there are a large number of friendly troops nearby ( as it’s confusing to work out which icon is which body ), but then - C-ops aren’t very dangerous then.

Definately, if a guy runs up to you and he’s not on your compass - DROP HIM!

cough

My problem is I’m too fast. An enemy C-ops in uniform shows up - and I’m blasting him hardcore straight after quickly checking my compass. My teammates often think I’m either a TK going postal, or an enemy C-ops myself…

(SmokeyTarget) #17

Oh yes, fully aware of that, but there’s nothing that can be done about not showing up on the compass/command map. Usually however the CVOps has raised my suspicion already, a quick glance at the compass for confirmation and bang.

I was hoping we could get together a list of tactics/suggestions for budding CVOps (everyone wants to be James Bond) to prevent them from standing out quite so obviously and therefore making more use of what is in my opinion one of the trickiest classes to master. (Not suggesting that I’ve mastered it myself of course, I’m usually your friendly neighborhood medic)

(HellToupee) #18

the funnest thing i had with covert was when i stole a noobs uniform, i ran back into him again ad i knew what he was thinking he was looking at his own name on me, so i thought ha he dosnt know whats going on map was fuel dump i was in axis base so for teh nxt 2mins he followed me around convused i lead him onto the roof and did away with him blew up both entrances totally spotted all mines all with his uniform on then he came back and i did away with him again :stuck_out_tongue:

(Smite[TLD]) #19

Just curious… is “Disguised Enemy” a reserved name in ET??? If not get your friends that are new to the game to use it… it might be fun.

(sorry… I was feeling especially cruel tonight)

(Emon) #20

If I recall correctly, it will say “Disguised Enemy!” in red letters when you hover over one and have the class and requirements. It doesn’t display health, either, like it does normally.

That trick might work to get newbs to shoot other newbs, though.
