Covert Ops/Field Ops?

(ir) #1

Just wondering…why is it the Covert Ops and not Covert Op for the name of the class? Same with Field Ops.

Surely if you are choosing a class it should be singular like the others?

Covert Ops - These elite operatives are able to use long-ranged sniper rifles and to gather advanced intelligence on the enemy. Often critical to mission objectives, Covert Ops can disguise themselves as fallen Strogg enemies and also hack Strogg technology to serve GDF needs.

This taken from the official community forums. So if I choose a class I can be something like Medic or I can pretend to be many people and play Covert Ops?

:?

Have u nothing better to do with ur time? :stuck_out_tongue:

Maybe the class is Covert Operations, who perform covert operations through the tactical application of covert operatives.

But in that case you are using a verb instead of a noun. And it still makes no sense if someone asks what class you are and you reply “Covert Operations”.

In the US Army, most of the Rangers, SEALs, Special Forces etc. are just refered to a Special Operations not Special Operatives.

its like do i want a jam sandwich or do i want a ham sandwich hmm tricky
I should put cheese on the ham but if i did i want some white pickles

Yes, Ranger class and SEAL class ~_~

“What are you soldier?”
“I’m a Rangers” - obviously the S is dropped

(ir) #8

Or we could apply your logic Ifurita to the other classes:

Soldier - Rangers
Medic - Field Docs
Engineer - Mechanics

And we can all be plural for no raison.

(Bongoboy) #9

No, Ifuri’s right. Just as Chief Weapons Officers are Weaps, and Special Operations personnel are SpecOps, so Field Operations Specialists are Field Ops and Covert Operations Specialists are Covert Ops.

(ir) #10

So why do you have some singular and some plural?

(Invisible421) #11

It’s basically saying “There’s a Covert Operations class” The operations portion is made plural because you do more than one operation, or skill if your prefer. You can destroy command posts and steal uniforms (along with a few other tasks). It’s because of this that you can say “The class is Covert Ops.” When you actually are the class though, you would say that you are a “Covert Operative” meaning you do covert operations. A way to shorten that would be to just say “I’m a covert op.” At least this is what i always thought.

(Bongoboy) #12

They’re not plural, they just end in “S”.

(SCi-Fi) #13

its too early for questions like that, its saturday!!!

If you really want to get technical, then you should ask why is the calss that uses heavy weapons called the Soldier.

Since “soldier”, unlike covert ops or engineer, is not a class at all, rather a general noun signifying everyone who serves in the army. So field ops, medics and everyone else are also soldiers. If anything it should be called heavy weapons specialist or something. I never got why is that so in ET and now in QW too.

(Ifurita) #15

Well, I don’t know about you, but in real life, I’d refer to myself as an Engineer (singular) and as Military Police (a collective noun). I don’t see someone refering to themselves as Special Operations being much different.

At work, I’m Strategic Sourcing, not a strategic sourcerer or sometimes I refer to my role as Procurement or a Procurement Specialist. Either way, I don’t really have much of a problem with using either one and to my audience, my role is pretty clear.

Singular …

field operator, covert operator.

Americans speak a different kind of English commonly known as
gobbldegook.

(Bongoboy) #17

You’re a Sorceror?

that explains EVERYTHING.

(iwound) #18

This is a SEAL, Scottish Regiment.
Not as highly trained as its American cousin but just as deadly.

The military certainly does.
