Controllers vs mouse/keyboard

He’s gonna need Aloe Vera for that burn.

Soldier of Fortune 2: Double Helix, smartass… a game based on the Quake III engine. If you are familiar with the correction of your thought process (a phenomenon mostly known by martial artists), then yes: you can reach that high level in 2 months and a half. FPS are very different from RTS games, since the only limitation is yourself.

my fav quote of his

“Bulletstorm could become one of the most influential game of 2011 and could bring back the old school FPS genre (skills matter)”

I played the demo for 11 minutes, then binned it

This must be a joke, funniest thing I’ve seen all morning!

And i was watching Drew Carey Improv-a-ganza!
I come from PC and I’ve played to a high skill level (very high actually…) with mouse and keyboard, but got totally bored (unmatched) after a while, so I decided to go play on console games instead and try the xbox controller. That was in 2003…

Now (2011), I can confirm that depending of the aiming system (all games offer a totally different thumbstick behavior), if it’s decent enough and if a player is really skilled, it’s totally possible to match Quake III players on PC, but I’m also including the possiblity to lead a headhot at that speed.

I can tell that it’s far easier to warm up with a mouse (3 seconds or one match) when it can take 3 match to 5 hours with a controller depending of how long you actually stopped playing. It can take 3 months with a mouse to become one of the top player once you understand how to correct your thought process and way much more with a game controller.

However, for the most harcdcore, the controller is a good option, because it really separates the rookies, veterans and pros, since it’s harder to become fast and precise with a thumbstick. And as I said earlier, it’s harder to get bored, because it’s harder to maintain a high skill level; always something to improve.

Unless you are handicaped, everyone can be good with a mouse, but not with a game controller.
Have you tried QuakeLive with your noobstick? We should duel. I would gladly give you as much warmup time as you need with your noobstick. Ill post demos here after… :stroggbanana:

Hey Jay, show this to Hardup, he’ll go on a mad rant.

(RAAAAAAAAAAGE) #27

Hyrage if your REALLY that good why arent you famous on the competitive gaming circuit? Shouldn’t there be youtube videos with 20 million views of you owning everyone that appears on your screen. Were you number 1 on the leaderboards for thos PC games you were unmatched on?

Disclaimer : This is not a personal attack, I just don’t have patience for people who consistently boast they are amazing even if they are or not.

(Diablo85) #28

Which SOF 2 clan where you in? I used to play that competitively. Never heard of any Hyrage though.

(LyndonL) #29

Wow it never ceases to amaze me. Hook line and sinker you guys. Kinda sad really.

(trigg3r) #30

stop picking on Hyrage guys!!! if he says he’s the most skilled player of the world, then that’s just how it is. HE DOESN’T HAVE TO PROVE ANYTHING!!

(Nail) #31

I feel an intervention brewing

(trigg3r) #32

was this your first clue?

(Nail) #33

was certainly an indicator

Back in the days (2003), I had was young, didn’t know anything about Pro Gaming, I don’t even know if there were decent recording devices and I didn’t care. The only thing I cared was that I wanted to master something to a very high degree and that I had a few months to do it 14 hours a day including the weekend and I did it in 2 months and a half on SoF2. I’ve used the tag Hyrage at the beginning by later switched for H E A D H U N T E R, the real one. At some point, I’ve been banned of most servers severely accused of hacking, cheating without any proof, since I’ve been doing throwable matches with only knives and was still getting the same result and god knows you can’t have a hack that reads minds. That’s the second reason why I quit PC gaming. I had so many clans on so many games, I really can’t remember what it was on SoF2.

Probably something as bad as WoD (Warriors of Darkness), can’t remember.

But I can tell you that when you reach the level I’m talking about, you can 3 shot burst 3 people in the head at 200 meters, enter in a room in a CTF and 2 shot 5 guys with a shotgun or dodge bullets. In fact, nobody dodges bullet, it’s simply an impression. In reality, all of this is aiming skills and a very high mind game, since you make them shot where you want and since SoF2 had ‘‘leaning’’… it was actually easy to dodge headshots and move like a monkey.

I never cared about pro gaming and a lot of those players are not that great or are not there for the right reasons: not very appealing to me. I thought about it recently, but I’m a game developer and I don’t have time for that at all and still prefer to make games instead since there isn’t any competitive game right now that makes me want to compete. Nowadays, most titles are way too casual.

For the Quake III, I’m sorry but I don’t have a boner when I see people killing someone else just because they picked up an Armor.

slow clap

Well, kid, I gotta hand it to you… you have balls. You came here, you claimed the 360 controller was as good as if not better than KB+M, claimed you were the best player LITERALLY IN THE WORLD, and then called the most popular eSport in North America stupid. What will you think of next?

Twist my words as much as you want, but that is certainly not what I said.

 • KB+M is different than game controllers: that’s it and you have to respect that.
 • eSports is amazing, some pro gamers are lame, some others deserve respect

Oh by the way, if you would have read everything I wrote in the last post, you wouldn’t have wrote ‘‘kid’’.

(DarkangelUK) #37

Did SoF2 ever get to what would be classed as a ‘high level’ competitive esport? That’s like saying I’m the best in the world at all ball games because I’m good at marbles.

(Linsolv) #38

It’s not different. They’re input devices. They might be different input devices, but they are comparable on an objective level.

There are only 3 major eSports: StarCraft 2, CS:S, and Quake 3. And CS:S is dying a slow death. So tell me again how you love eSports?

(master[mind]) #39

The real reason for my 3200dpi is that my mouse only uses a 1-2 inch area during gaming, yet I turn at subpixel increments. A single “pixel” of movement from my mouse translates to a 1/2 pixel of movement on screen(courtesy of 3d being in floating-point, that is 100% possible). That is why DPI is important.

Loving eSports doesn’t mean loving the games that were selected. I don’t enjoy the randomness in CS:S and I don’t think the powerups in Quake III make much sense and I’m not a RTS player anymore. Still I love competitive games and what eSport attempts to be. It’s like I love martial arts, but I don’t like all of them.

SoF2 required more skills than CS:S and that’s just a mathematical fact. A cone of fire is pretty much like playing dice. maybe SoF2 wasn’t picked up by WCG, but most games that were selected by MLG doesn’t require much skills, but still were picked up. It’s just too bad that competitive gaming isn’t a popular market enough for most game studios to be properly considered once again.
