Connecting over a LAN to play online ?

Having little knowedge of setting up LAN connections I’m trying to figure out how to get online through the LAN internet connection.

There’s my PC, which is ideal for gaming, were as the “server” definiatley is not ( dinosaur ).

Currently it’s only two PC’s running Win2k. The “server” has an internal ADSL Modem, connecting both PC’s to the net. It’s also running Norton Firewall.

Now disabling this firewall allows my PC to get a server list. However I dont want to have the firewall disabled for obvious reasons and I cant move the internal modem into my PC.

What do I need to do so I can play from my PC through the “server’s” internal modem ?

[My PC]---->>----[“server”–>--firewall/modem—Internet out]

If I disable the firewall and get the server list, join a game I start to load and then almost instantly get “connection timed out”.

Am I missing a protocol type in my network setup ? Do I have to install a proxy server on the “server” and if so any suggestions where I might find one ?

ahh come on couldn’t you have taken a slightly other name? :wink: (of course it’s the best though)

anyway: you have to add a rule in your firewall (how depends on the firewall) that allows your pc’s to connect to the outside on the needed port (dunno the number now but just watch your firewall message it should tell you - search for a logfile or something there you will find it) and if you want your server to be reachable from outside you would have to allow that port for incoming connections as well

does anybody have the port numbers at hand?

Actually I’ve only recently taken this name up as my new handle, havent changed it in over 4 years thought I’d try for something different in FPS games as I’m usually an RTS kinda guy.

I believe I need UDP on port: 27960 ( just like Q3A I cant get working :s )

I messed with the firewall settings and under the millionth menu I played with the protection level and now I can join a server, transfer any maps I dont have but I have a new problem. The load bar goes all the way to the end, then to tease me it jumps back a little bit, rinse repeat until I ESC out.
