Config/Wallhack Problems

(Mr_Tickles) #1

Hey guys…
Was just wondering if this would be considered a wallhack?
This is from one of the members of my clan and we’re a bit concerned about it as it could end up giving the clan a bad rep.
I have read that there is something in the settings that you can use to do this or similar in the config, but not sure if it’s allowed.

If it’s very dodgy, could you shed some light on how to fix it please?

Because this is about a config file, why not compare it to whatever cup or league you’re playing in? Unless you’re a “public clan”–not that there’s anything wrong with that.

I suppose we’re a “public clan” at the moment, however we’re playing some friendly matches to get into clan playing and hopefully this’ll lead to joining a league/ladder.

r_depthbits 32 will get rid of that
…not an illegal cvar though

Old bug/exploit with 16-bit z-buffer (at least back from RtCW).

Ahh, brilliant, thanks guys

Note that the actual z depth provided by your video card is often tied to the color depth (e.g. r_colorbits 16 -> 16 bit zbuffer, r_colorbits 24 or 32 gives a 24 bit z_buffer). The r_depthbits cvar is only a hint to the engine, it picks whatever it thinks is “best” based on a number of factors.

kinda surprising they havn’t made this illegal yet. they did with cg_bobup for it’s wallhack-like effect. among other things, like the binocular thing in rtcw.

Interesting u use screens from Temple - for some reason (and I only tweak my cfg a bit for FPS) when looking across the river etc I can see guys behind walls from time to time - but it make no difference as I can never hit em anyway - wall or no wall! :stuck_out_tongue:

You can get this effect even with a 24 bit z-buffer (many consumer cards won’t ever give you a 32 bit z-buffer). You are more likely to see it on large maps.

Restricting z depth is somewhat problematic. As I previously said, r_depthbits is only a hint, so forcing that with pb or etpro won’t stop people from getting the effect. r_colorbits sometimes affects z depth, but this isn’t universal. Finally, for people with low end video cards, 16 bit color (which usually also causes 16 bit z depth) provides a big performance gain.

When I had a really low end video card, I used 16 bit color, but I switched to 24 bit as soon as I got a better card. The wallhack effect can be useful for spotting snipers etc, but OTOH, you often can’t tell when you could hit them or not.

it can be quite an advantage when sniping but more of a hinderance otherwise IMHO. As already said, but in different words, cant really stop people making any effort to keep it and there would be a true downside from trying to.

of course admins are liable to assume a wallhack if they see it with pbss or whatever, and even those that know about it may conclude that you had a wallhack effect that you chose not to stop, and therefore can be seen to be cheating.
