Complex Megatexture Roads

Does anyone have any idea how SD went about making seamless junctions and irregular roads on their maps? The wiki only really covers single roads using the road tool? I’m looking to create something like in Outskirts in the example below:

Yeah, trying to make an american style city map, for now I’m using brushes and patches for the roads but it doesn’t look as good as it could be.

Excuse the darkness, still playing around with the atmosphere settings, actually looks nice in game.

Anyway would really like to use a megatexture for the roads and some of the areas later in the map.
