This may sound like a stupid question, but I’m new to making maps… My question is how do you compile?
Please, no links (if possible) because that’s all I’ve been getting from every website I ask this on…

The fast (but not best) way is: in Radiant go to the menue BSP and select one of them… for example Q3Map2: (test) BSP -meta, -vis, -light, -fast, -filter.
A bit slower, but much more powerful and giving u a lot more options is:
Get Q3map2build as a compiling frontend, because its giving you all the options as switches, and a logfile, and is easily set up. Get Q3map2build here:
http://www.bobdev.com/
Under “Programs” go to “-Q3map2build” and download it. In the readme.txt you ll find detailed how-to-install instructions as well.
Of course you should use the latest q3map2 too. How you have to install the q3map2 is described in detail in the readme what ships with q3map2.
I downloaded it, and I got to the part with a black-backgrounded window. I don’t know what to do now… :???:
The black window with the white text is working by itself… u can see its working right?
Make sure you have enabled to get a logfile, and know where to find the logfile. With the logfile you will easily be able to track compiling problems.
When the black window closes itself, the compile is done.
For a start use these custom compiling settings which you can easily set in q3map2build:
BSP: -meta -v
VIS: -v
LIGHT: -fast -v
Do not use the “pause” switches. If you have all this, the compile should easily run through once you selected your .map and hit “build”.
If any stage takes more than 10 minutes… post what happens, and we ll help you.
Ok, I got the log file (I think that’s what it is) of it. Now, how do you get it to work? (It may not be that, but it has the name of my map on it)
U open it with a simple text editor…
But i m at a loss with what your problem is… can you plz describe in detail what you tried to get a compile done? And if you have a logfile (mapname.log) from the compile, your map did compile (or u can ready in the logfile why not).
It is a batch file. Am I supposed to have that? I don’t know how to get a log file, I waited for the black window to dissapear, and I got the batch file instead.
Q3map2build generates the .bat automatically and executes it when you hit “build”. The logfile is a .log you get after the compile.
Still you need to describe IN DETAIL (step-by-step) what you tried to get a compile else i can’t see what you r doing wrong.
There is a good reason for this. A tutorial is going to give you a more accurate and detailed answer than a forum post. If you aren’t willing to take the time to read a website, you alost certainly will never be able to make maps. It is a time consuming, technical process. Learning how to do it well requires quite a bit of study.
Ok, I clicked what map I wanted to compile, then I pressed build. That’s about all I do. What I think your saying is dont do that yet, right? How do I get the logfile?
There is a switch on the left side u should tick when you want a logfile… duh!
Also check your preferences and set the paths right.
You set it to where you would like to find your logfiles, it doesn’t matter.
Ok, after I set the logfile path and check the box, do I press build?

Erm… no. You just wait till your computer does it by itself.

LOL… you really had to think about an appropriate answer, hu?
