Almost entirely PC (Windows). Would be willing to go to Linux fulltime for gaming if it were supported well enough by the gaming industry.
Last serious console was the Dreamcast. I bought my mother a Wii/Skyward Sword, and played through that. Does that count? Also bought the Metroid Prime trilogy, though I haven’t spent much time with it.
For FPS games I can’t imagine ever being satisfied with consoles; paying to host my own p2p games is just silly, microtransactions are silly, the refusal to develop proper controls for fps games is silly, autoaim is silly, skill-blunting mechanisms are silly, DRM is silly, and the fact that console players don’t freak out over this stuff enough to get it all changed and actually often defend it scares me.
For non-FPS games I don’t really mind consoles per se, although the lack of modding and the extra expense of buying hardware for the limited number of games that interest me puts me off.
Sonic Generations (PC) has been a really big surprise ‘console’ game this year, in that it’s (1) actually really good and (2) had a reasonable PC release instead of being the usual terribad console port. The latter means that the game has already been cracked open for modding: the dodgy classic sonic physics are being adjusted to something more S3&K, and people are porting Unleashed daytime stages over and stuff. I’ve spent something like 30 hours finishing off all the challenges, getting S-Ranks and doing speed runs. It’s bizzarely like the Sega of old, where playing the game was its own reward.
Skyward Sword (Wii) was pretty neat too. I found the motion controls kinda tiresome to begin with, but they do add a mild skill-based element to sword fighting. And it’s Zelda. Also the main theme zelda’s lullaby thing = mind blown.
Got Deus Ex: HR (PC). It’s actually really quite good too; lots of throwbacks to the first one. Some odd AI behaviour at times, but you can look past it because it’s just really fun Batmanning your way through everything.
I haven’t really had the time to get good at FPS games for the past couple years, but the new Tribes thing has been tempting.
And what does this poll mean? Does this mean that you will maybe stick to the PC PLATFORM now? We as gamers know how gaming companies just do terrible ports from console to PC. The console market is blooming at the moment, but only because of the ‘ease of use’. People don’t like spending hours of customising, installing drivers etc… which is why the streaming of games such as OnLive will be big when internet connections can handle it well.
I for one am a PC gamer although I don’t play games any more. I have had PS1, PS2, SNES, NES, PS3, XBOX, XBOX360, NGAGE, GAMEBOYS(ALL OF THEM), NINTENDO DS, DSI, SEGA, SEGA SATURN, N64 etc… but none of them have ranked up more time than PC, not all of the console put together x20 would be the amount of time I spent on Wolf:ET alone.
PC gamers have respect and appreciate games, unlike console kids.
I used to be a big PC gamer, but found that I was constantly chasing the latest system specs and was always playing current games with cut down graphics. I did enjoy the flexibility of PC gaming, but have since found that consoles fit far more neatly into my daily life.
Crossing over from keyboard to controller was the hardest part and I found the loss of sensitivity in control a big problem, but now it feels completely natural. So, I would definitely have to say I’m a console gamer all the way. I have XBOX 360 and PS3, but I cannot stand the PS3 controller, despite years of playing on every generation of that console, so ultimately I am almost exclusively an XBOX 360 user.
iDan has a point in that console gaming is often plagued by juvenile irritants, but I have to say that most console games are also inhabited by a strong community of intelligent players, you just have to get involved enough to find them. Even without the community I have found that most team games tend to gel really well when you jump into open games. You really just have to be willing to get stuck in.
I will say, to counter iDan’s comments, when I was a PC gamer I often found the PC communities I was exposed to to be far more elitist than console communities with little or no tolerance for noobs. Honestly though, that’s an opinion formed from my own experience and not, I’m sure, indicative of either community at large.
(Also, this point is slightly off topic, so apologies for that).
Actually console tech is old, pc users dont need to upgrade every 2 years with multiplatform titles.
