Community Opinion: Your favourite 'characters' in a competitive team PC FPS

(Crispy) #1

Following on from the “best competitive team PC FPS” thread (if you haven’t read/commented on this, please do!), I’d like to ask another couple of questions to really drill down into this.

I’m interested in what ‘character(s)’ you enjoyed or "grokked’ hardest. But on top of that I’m interested in other ‘characters’ that you feel complemented your own ‘character’ well. Ones that fit well within the gameplay and played a pivotal role in your team makeup, but that you didn’t much care for playing yourself for whatever reason.

The questions:

[ol]
[li]What is your favourite ‘character’ in a competitive team PC FPS that you ‘mained’?
[/li][li]Which ‘character’ that you didn’t ‘main’ in a competitive team PC FPS do you feel contributed to the gameplay experience most?
[/li][/ol]

Notes:

 • By ‘character’ I don’t mean the look of a character, I mean the defining characteristics. E.g. in a class-based shooter it’d be a class (e.g. Medic). In Counter-Strike 1.6 it would be a particular weapon or combination of weapons (e.g. Deagle+AWP). In Tribes 2 it might be a more complex build flavour. Feel free to dive into as much detail as you like, and to debate the relevant pros/cons!
 • By ‘main’ I mean one that you played most to the point you felt you ‘grokked’ it

The background behind the question is that I’m interested in the elements of that particular role/weapon/ability set that give a player a deep sense of mastery and purpose.

1-Technician in ETQW : blaster, lacerator, stroyent (ammo and life) with stroy-up/down, spawn host and stroyent tool for gib ennemy… the best rambo, good support for his team (revive and strategical spawn)… Lacerators have got no reload, just a heater that can easily master, a little spread on etqw pro mode, ADS is clear and right to use just in long shot.

2- Engineer/constructor (5vs5-6vs6 etqw pro mode) : mines (trip and proxi), turrets (AIT, AVT, APT), repair (turrets, vehicules), diffuse and construct, a good support for his team mainly in defense.

 1. As i mentoined before, etqw was my <3 fps game, and my favorite character from there too. I really enjoy to play engener (duno why, but i like GDF one more), especialy in defence.
 2. Can’t answer properly, maybe it’s medic, i mean not rambo-medics, i mean support medic, guy who always revive and drop medpacks instead of fraging.

Main character :

ET medic.
How medic worked in ET was just amazing. You could in some situation strafe like crazy in the middle of several enemies and get revives going and manage to survive due to the fact that your revived allies procure you kind of a shield protection.

Quakelive doesn’t really have characters by the terms you asked, but the way rocket launcher works is so cool. Being able to chain air rockets is awesome.
And shaft is just pure tracking without any kind of recoil/ spread, pretty awesome too.

Characters that contributed a lot :

ET Panzerfaust.
Very situational use and mainly for spawnkill, but it could be a game changing weapon. One very good shot could take out 4/5 players and it was pretty fun to watch too. But I don’t think it would work in the current state of Xt especially with those maps.
Same idea for the field ops in ET, where you could drop sneaky Air strikes/ Arty. Also not the case in Xt.

I have not seriously played any other competitive team PC FPS so that’s it for me.

I don’t think I can answer this question very well since I’ve never thought of ‘characters’ even before I played Dota/LoL/Dota2.
This basically means that: when I was playing enemy territory it was not about the specific character. It was about the class. When I was playing CoD or CS it wasn’t about the character but the weapons (c.q. Builds).
So what I’m trying to say is, a medic is no character. It’s a class. A AK47 also isn’t a character, it’s a weapon.

ET: IF I had to choose a class, then I’d say Medic.
CSS: IF I had to choose a weapon, then I’d say Deagle w/ AK47 w/ Flashgrenades
CoD: IF I had to choose perks, then I’d say Rapid reloading and/or Scavenger

But still, I think your question is wrong.
Cheers

 1. in etqw i mained the ‘Objective-class on an Icarus’. This was basically the mostest fun for me. rush-plants, lemming-builds of lasers, sneek-caps of forward spawn etc-etc. Aside for anansi/carb Icarus was the fastest thing in etqw.

 2. in etqw: Medic-in-battle. I mean that guy, who survives among 3-4 enemies and revives all his team whatever it takes! The combination of fast-Defib / strafe jumps / Spawn protection of the revived was so tight - u could actually get the advantage in milliseconds

 3. Quakelive CTF - second attacker. time emeny’s RA/YA/MEGA and synchronize push with first attacker.

first of all ty for the link with explain for grokked :D.
i played mostly 3o3 in et
most played and most enjoyed i would say the medic in et.
since my aim wasnt rly great i could be helpfull in 3o3 and you had the most life health regen…

most important char was the eng.the rifle eng as dmg dealer(example night). also the most underrated and hardest class was the smg eng .
there were only a few good 6o6 smg engs in et. i always was impressed about the playstyle of smg engs.famous example was drago :)(relativly bad aim,but a very allrounded player).it requires much more skill to stay alive and plant or construct than playing rambomedic .

 1. ETQW - strogg medic
 2. AVA - m4 rifleman
 3. CF - m4/ak47

basically anyone who FRAGS AND BEASTS is my favourite.

Cheers
I thought I used the quotation marks fairly judiciously there. Think of it as ‘specialisation’.

1. What is your favourite ‘character’ in a competitive team PC FPS that you ‘mained’?

Engineer in QW, as he was always the most important support/objective class and always super busy during comp matches.

 1. Which ‘character’ that you didn’t ‘main’ in a competitive team PC FPS do you feel contributed to the gameplay experience most?

Medics, backbone of each team. Were there to set the frags, protect the objective players, keeping your team alive.

(Humate) #15

ETQW:
rambo med / hyper or gpmg / scope

As far as the second question, depends on the style a team plays and the level of competition.
I would say an objective player who has the capacity to play the frag orientated classes, and dominate with those - contributes the most. They are able to team-down as the last man standing, and get the clutch defuse.

4 years of rifle in ET

I think Panzerfaust from ET, First of all i dont think there is a FPS game atm with similar weapon and most epic moments in ET were made by panzer :}

(dirtybomber) #17

Pls come play everyone

Definitly medic for all the support he can provide to the team and the movement versatility.
And Engie or objective guy who need to sneak and run for the objective, but obj guy in Xt are most of the time not really needed …

(Glottis-3D) #19

the most (aside from the maps) disapointing thing in Ex for me so far :frowning:

well , i think a problem with the old system (which i still prefer), is that as a result of the heavy detail of modern maps there are simply too much points to hide and backrape. this way you can easily shut down the obj guy.
