Community in brink

(Shinjorai) #1

Im a quakewars veteran from way back, never played ET but i have lots of friends i met in QW that couldnt stop talking about how great it was. The main reason Im looking forward to this game is that feeling of a real community quakewars seemed to have, and i genuinely hope it continues with this game. What im getting at is now adays most FPS games especially modernwarfare 2 if anybody went through that horrible fiasco with no dedicated servers full of hackers and rude ass people, it was like a constant barrage of stupid. While there was occasional rude people in quakewars i mean you always get those people in everything its inevitable but i was really impressed by how much quakewars through the years reminded me of a warm safe place in my gaming library that no matter how far i strayed i could always come back to.

Id took a break from playing quakewars to play other games and its been a year or more since i played, when i came back i ran into more than one familiar face that was like Hey! Wow i havent seen you in forever. Just kindve amazing to me when a game community its that close knit that people remember you years later. I just really hope Brink has that kindve cohesiveness in the community and can be a new virtual home for alot of people.

Just basically want to say i look forward to gaming with all of you in the many months and years to come in brink and look forward to lots of good games.

I plan to preorder a server as soon as i can find out where to get them from, im more excited about this game than ive been about anything in a long time. :penguin:

Community is a hard thing to gauge pre-launch. It usually ends up being the case that “whoever shows up, shows up”.

But a large percent of the fan base are long-time splash damage fans, so there is a reasonable chance of having a similar community to their past games.

ET:QW does have an advantage that Brink doesn’t, though. ET:QW has a well established, old community. As communities age, the players who complain a lot or aren’t as mature tend to leave. On the other hand, the players who have a respect for the game and are still having fun tend to stay.

Either way, its an impossible question to answer before the game comes out.

(Seyu) #3

Players recognizing each other has more to do with the small size of the Quake Wars than anything else. lol But I do get what you are talking about, a tightly knit community, if anywhere, is going to be found in a game about teamwork.

(Ajax's Spear) #4

If the forums are any indication of the Brink gaming community, it will be a perpetually even 50/50 split between jerks and noobs.

(Shinjorai) #5

lol aint it always

(Shinjorai) #6

Yeah i agree, still a nice facet though, ill be arriving with a group of friends and like i say getting a server too so hoping to at the very least build a community around that if not the game as a whole and try to recreate some of that “close knitness”, (hell i guess thats how u say that haha)

I just wonder though because i read its using steam, i seen that ure made to install steam when i preordered on direct2drive. I wonder if theres gonna be permanent user names, or u can change your name at will like u can on your steam account, the account name stays the same but you can change the display name at will. Just so many questions, and damn im bored i wish may 17th would hurry the hell up lol.

If that’s what you are looking for, then you could easily get it by just sticking to a few servers, or maybe just one. If you ran your own, like you seem to plan to, you would have the ability to ban people who flame, as well as get to know the regulars.

(Shinjorai) #8

yeah thats true, i just hope i dont have to ban anybody, really wanna try to be fair and not one of those nazi admins, there was one server back on quakewars i wont name any names but the admins banned people because they killed them, it got pretty rediculous at times. You never knew what kindve mood the admins were in that day. I ussually tried to avoid that one but sometimes friends would be on there so id go play there.

My main issue now though is trying to find a server provider I have no idea where to look to be honest, Ive helped admin a bunch of servers but never funded my own. So this is all new ground for me. I hear some good things about NFO servers i think the guy said. Maybe i heard him wrong, ive gotta go back and get more details. I know we tried gameservers.com for a blackops server and it was kinda shaky at best service wise.

Banning people for being better than you is silly

Banning people because they aren’t the kind of community you want is just fine in my book. There are always more servers for them to play in, but you only have one server to manage, so you might as well weed out undesirables.

(Apples) #10

oO Shinjorai aint dead (yet)

Yeah I allways prefered the little communities where everyone knows everyone, but for the dev’s sake I think the bigger the better

What I love with the little communities is that any server you choose, you’ll know most of the players, in BC2 with its bazzilion of servers, you usually end up sticking with one or two servers only if you want to meet the same peoples, and when these 2 servers are full, well you are screwed (I’m exagerating I know, but you got the feeling)

Peace

thats true, point taken

(Herandar) #15

Shinjorai is the only noob on this thread, I guess that makes the rest of us jerks.

(Ajax's Spear) #16

I meant in general, silly.

(Herandar) #17

Ajax, you know a fair amount of posters consider Apples, you and myself, at the very least, to be jerks. Argue for your position and it is inevitable. Maybe LyndonL too, but his posts more often amuse me.

Shadowcat still has jerk potential, and Seyu seems to stick to what he knows.

(DarkangelUK) #18

Oh hai! Did someone say my name? Sorry, was feeling left out :frowning:

(Shinjorai) #19

Im glad to be a noob at anything right now, todays my birthday and i just turned 36 so anything to help me not feel old as hell haha. And nothing really wrong with being a jerk occasionally, sometimes its good to get a point across long as u dont make a fulltime job of it and turn into a full blown wally, or asshat, meathat or any variety of hat, i really hate hats.

(Xerxes52) #20

In the unfortunate event that the community turns out bad like Halo or COD, at least there’s bots.

Pretty much the only reason I play Black Ops (other than LAN games with friends) is because it has AI (crappy AI, but I will take what I can get on the 360, most game devs either can’t or won’t do bots on consoles anymore).
