community consensus on public server "rules and regulations" ???

(f34n0r) #1

So I thought we might try and have a discussion about public server rules and regulations.

I will try and be as objective as I can about this. Obviously all server admins have the power to set their own rules and regulations, and they can simply ignore the rest of the community. But I think there is an opportunity here to have some discussion and possibly reach some kind of consensus or even a partial consensus.

I will start by talking about TAW’s viewpoint. We only have rules against:
-disrespecting other players (ie: racist remarks, insults, etc. We try and mute first, then kick, and finally ban if you don’t stop)
-making continuous VOIP or text disturbances (we will try and mute you first but if you quit and rejoin to clear the mute we will kick or ban)
-extreme profanity (we don’t flip out over occasional slips, but repeated offenders = mute/kick and finally ban if you don’t stop)
-glitches (ie: volcano, valley, slipgate, refinery, etc.)
-recruiting on our servers (this is a no-brainer right?)
-impersonating TAW members by wearing the TAW tags without permission (we will try and warn you/ ask you to remove them first before we kick/ban)
-disrespecting the TAW organization repeatedly (another no-brainer right?)
-continuous/intentional team-killing (another no-brainer right?)

We do kick a lot of people randomly to make room for TAW members when the server is full. Usually we choose the person with the lowest XP or the person with the highest ping. We always spam a text warning before we do it as well. However, now that we have two ranked servers, we don’t do it as much.

Other than that stuff, we don’t kick or ban people. And we NEVER do it for gameplay reasons. I must say that I disagree with the following server rules that I have seen on other servers:
kick/ban for:
-/kill (it’s part of the game… they gave us that command and a spawn timer for a reason. There is nothing wrong with trying to make a spawn timer, or trying to deprive the enemy team of kill XP to prevent them from getting unlocks and advantages over you)
-planting on North Sewer Grate, destroying strogg deployables on Volcano (I mean, come on, why have rules against these?!)
-killing too much (I still see a lot of kicks of people who are “too good” by bad admins, and lots of people that I know, it’s very sad)
-having a net_clientprediction close to 0 or even 0 itself. (This is an id game people, it was MEANT to be configurable. If you don’t like that and want a game that won’t let the user modify lots of cvars or hardly any, there is always MW2 or BC2. If people have a good internet connection, why should they be forced to play with 20-25 client prediction? That’s like forcing someone with a 42" screen to play 800X600 because it is “unfair” for them to use 1920X1080 and visdistmult 1.2)
-spawn camping (nothing wrong with this, it’s part of the game and the enemy will often hide high-value deployables inside their base, or they will snipe from inside their base/spawn. For many maps, like Outskirts, the teams spawn very close to the objective so if the GDF DON’T spawncamp on the last obj they have almost no chance of transmitting without the single-most coordinated team of medics you’ve ever seen)

I would like to invite other server admin.s and community members to weigh on this. I think it is important to discuss this stuff because if we improve the overall level of admin actions on a lot of servers, more people will stay with this game and not move onto crappy games like MoH (I verified that it’s a BC2 clone at PAX, even the devs there seemed depressed), MW2, BC2, COD7, etc.

I don’t play on public servers alot, usually promod, however your pointed out some very good points that always frustrate me…

  1. The clientprediction settings, i 100% agree with your argument, should be set between (net_clientprediction 0 to 25) any less than 0 and i think people are starting to abuse the command to gain unhittness. cough cough…

  2. I also agree to the /kill, however there are some players that just respawn because they don’t want to die to you again, ive had this many times. But the /kill is very important if players actually learned to use it properly for a timed push rather than to annoy the opponent.

  3. killing too much, i doubt u can change their mind on what is a cheat or not as they are clearly dilussional, ive been called cheater/kicked/banned way too many times just for the amount of kills, sometimes they don’t even spec you which is rediculous…

But i know which servers to play and which to avoid so it makes no difference to me if im honest.

totally agree with the rules/guidelines you guys use on your server(s) one reason why i play there so often…

keep it up - hopefully ETQW wont die when Brink comes out…

and thanks for providing them ----

You may want to convey this bit of information to your member Neo-Anglesous(or something like that)

Peep went all postal on me the other night, dropping the F bomb left and right after his attempt to kick me failed… not sure why, never said a word to the peep until the kick attempt. he never explained the kick, he just started cussing me out ???

— Just curious –

Never ran a ETQW server, was wondering if it was possible to set a MAX ping allowed?
you guys get a lot traffic, with some serious high pingers-- dont care what anyone says they do effect the server - with most pings 150 and below, my lagometer stays green 99% of time, get a couple 250 and above- and am seeing yellow and Red spikes every other minute…

also- do you guys ever restart you servers? with as much traffic you all get, you should be bouncing those bad boys once a day…

Peace…

Servers aren’t meant for reboots

(AnthonyDa) #5

ETQW servers needs to be rebooted every day if you want to get rid of lag. (at least partially, because it will stay a lag-fest)

(DrpPlates) #6

a live production one (websites / email servers) - yes they dont require a re boot…

a gaming server does… at least once a week… a good bounce - restarts all the services and gets them running up to spec…

As DA stated, bouncing a ETQW server helps to remove lag…

I tend to like TAW’s server rules, and any other place that uses similar.
I like to summarize them as “Don’t be a dick. Have fun.” <3

(singing_fish) #8

Guess it’s no problem to have different rules.
Not everybody likes to be mainstream

cheers,
no-brainer <*)))<

TAW| has some of the best practices when running a public server. PCB in fact is run similarly to a TAW| server (members wait in line, however).

I prefer attitude and spirit over the letter of the law but guidelines are guidelins, try and stay within them.

Good job keeping gg’s on the NA server, feanor. I most always enjoy playing there.:stroggbanana:

(Cankor) #10

Your rules are perfect.

I won’t play on servers with no spawn camping rules, yes it can occasionaly be a problem but, as on 3rd objective on Valley you need to stop the Strogg before the get inside, that’s pretty much the only way to do it. It’s not like it’s Railgun where you have no options.

The kicking for planting North is simply idiotic, as is kicking for using /kill. If the guy wants to kill himself, even if just to deny you a kill, who gives a crap, he’s still dead. And if you’re in a firefight and the spawn timer is right there and you’d rather be starting fresh, that’s part of playing game with spawn waves, people need to get a clue.

(Gradis) #11

good sensible rules

(xTriXxy) #12

i do agree , just join on one france server u will see there is restricted almost everything via pb. even maxclientrate.

just keep all the servers with default settings thats all.

and lulu servers, i dont understand why there is 20 minute kick length for clientprediction not between 20-25 ??

sometimes i feel like server admins are from norht korea where is restricted almost everything and players are forced to play under stupid conditions.

(Nail) #13

on pubs, rule # 1: don’t piss off admins

(xTriXxy) #14

hehe when i was clan admin sometimes i banned my own clan mates for that

(Cankor) #15

Do you guys have red arrows on? Could of sworn I saw that on one of your servers last night, but don’t remember seeing it previously.

(f34n0r) #16

No red arrows on our servers either. I usually avoid servers with red arrows.

(scud24) #17

Good rule-set
