Class-Specific Gloves

(Luftwaffle) #1

I’ve been paying attention to these for a while as I think they’re a nice touch. Basically, whenever you change classes, your gloves will change too, probably to remind you of what class you are playing. Anyway, its a nice touch, and the most recent trailer showed a few of them that we haven’t seen before.

Security:
Soldier: Blue and black fingerless gloves.

Medic: Red rubber medical gloves that appear to have the “Ark tactical” logo on them.

Engineer: Orange full-fingered work gloves (kinda like the engineer glove in TF2, but more elaborate)

Operative: Long gray and black gloves.
Newer picture: http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww338/The_Luftwaffle/secopperativegloves.png
Older picture (still probably the same gloves) http://i733.photobucket.com/albums/ww338/The_Luftwaffle/secopperativeglovesold.png

Resistance:
Soldier: Blue and black fingerless gloves held together with duct tape. Kinda like the security ones went through a blender.

Medic: Medical bandages as hand wraps.

Operative: Pretty hard to tell from this picture, and this is the only one I found, but looks to be black outsides sloppily sewn to messy cloth on the inside.

Engineer: A yellow work glove with a similar texture to the security one, but more sewn up and shorter, like the operative glove.

(Thanks to PariahDog for the tip)

It seems that these only appear in the first person. In third person, everyone has black fingerless gloves. I don’t know if this is something that will change, but if not, that means the gloves are only for your viewing and can’t be used by enemies to determine your class (I would love confirmation on this). Also, if you find better pictures of the Operative gloves send them my way.

This is really impressive. And very cool.

I think this is a fine idea. It helps you remember what you are. It’d be cool if the engineer, operative or soldier could have a perk that would tell you the classes of your enemies. In fact, it could work just fine as a universal perk.

Aaaah good ! This is something I heard about in one interview and didn’t find reference to
after that… I tried to see it in the different videos that have been upload on youtube but
again, didn’t really achieve to see the difference… tanks man !

Now what I’m wondering is : Is there a way to distinguish classes on other player without the HUD indicator ?
Are the backpacks (that don’t come from customization, obviously, and that aren’t glowing red for the info)
hints for guessing it ?

(Shadowcat) #5

I’m pretty sure that backpacks are what allow you to tell the classes of your enemies. Something as small as gloves would be hard to spot in the middle of battle.

(Jess Alon) #6

It is the backpacks that let you tell. The gloves are most likely a nice little extra detail. Long time no see shadowcat.

(Loffy) #7

Nice catch Luftwaffle! Thx also for the images.

(JeP) #8

Yeah yeah, I’m aware of the gloves being too little to tell the classes, I’m wondering if it’s really the backpacks that can tell us for enemy classes, and if that’s the case, what are the differences. In the last trailer, I can’t seem to see more that one backpack for security players, that seems to be the ingeneer one, and I’d say people without a backpack are operatives but that’s just plain guessing.

But I find the game of guessing games mechanics/elements of game design quite fun ^^ After reading HORSES’s compendum, I’ve been able to see much more elements from previous videos I had already watched over and over again.

If the gloves are anything to go by, the accent color is one of the big differences.
Blue = Soldier
Red = Medic
Yellow = Engineer
Green = Operative

These colors also extend to the class tools, so I’m guessing it will be pretty common across the game. Green PDA; red accents on the medic syringe; yellow accents on the engineer blowtorch; blue screen on the HE bomb.

As opposed to the class icon next to the health bar? :slight_smile:

When you aim your gun at a player, it shows you their class.

Looking at the video in the Pax East video inVaporman’s Thread. The team is resistance and at the 3 minute mark if you pause it just right you can see the glove when the engineer glove when he throws a gun buff. It looks like yellow work gloves that have seen better days. I do have a picture saved I can upload when I get home.

(Luftwaffle) #12

Nice catch. I went ahead and grabbed a few screens of it. You also get a nice shot of the weapon upgrade wrench and the crosses tattoo. I’ll update the OP.

Nice research, Herr Luftwaffle : )

You’re quite correct, the class gloves are for first person rather than third, and they’re more of a fun bit of detail/subtle hint than a primary indicator. If you’re holding certain weapons, or a weapon with a vertical front grip for instance, all you can see of your class glove is your thumb. If there is a game where you can accurately gauge your class by gazing at your thumb, we haven’t played it. So in Brink the main reminder for what class you currently are is the class icon displayed in the upper left of the HUD.

As for enemy players, you can easily tell what class they are by the cunning expedient of just looking at them. Their class icon pops up right alongside their health bar. HUD icons get a bad press, but they have the useful ability of always facing you and always being visibly lit. In the end clarity was the over-riding priority : )

You stay Classy, SD Forum.

(Herandar) #14

You stay classy, middle-aged man with a nickname of ‘Bongo Boy’. No, I’m just posting on this thread because the tags really amused me.

(DouglasDanger) #15

This is neat. Thanks for elaborating on our speculation.

(JeP) #16

Seems simple enough.

… I can’t help but wondering : what’s the deal with this backpacks then ?
But that seems to be just me :cool:

(Humate) #17

Backpacks are supposed to help the enemy identify your class, without having to aim at you.

So say you are a soldier, and you are attacking…its your job to plant the charge.
If you are in a group of 3 - engie soldier and operative… the enemy needs to be able to identify what class you are instantly, in order to make sure you cant plant the bomb.

You might say, well dont players have icons above their heads - cant players tell that way? And the answer to that is yes they can tell that way, but by the time they scan their mouse over 3 players to figure out who to shoot - they’ll be dead.

(JeP) #18

Well yeah, that was my guess :

And personnally being able to tell classes just by looking at the model seems useful to me.

But since Bongoboy don’t mention it, I’m wondering…

It’s just out of curiosity though, nothing really important.

(Humate) #19

My bad Jep!
But for those that wanted to know, thats how it works in game. :slight_smile:

That’s some awesome looking details right there!
