Class Builds... Dual class or Max just out one?

(TheDoomSpoon) #1

Since iv been on this forum iv noticed quite a few people run a “dual” class character. Where as I have just dumped all my points into Engineer and im wondering if I have made a mistake…

What’s everyone’s views? Do you run a dual class or have 1 specialisation maxed out?

(ran93r) #2

At the old cap you could happily run two classes and skip some of the chaff. Now you can probably invest in a lot of useful stuff for three, four at a push if you are happy to miss out on a few more skills.

Personally all my toons are dual class, once I have levelled those I will have a proper look at three class builds.

You can’t max out your Engineer because there aren’t enough spots to map if you choose every single ability in a class. I found this out the hard way and have to respec all 5 of my characters. What I am doing is leveling each one of my dudes to 24 then I am going to respec all of them. Choosing just about ALL of the Universal is something I plan to do with my 5 dudes. Once I have tried all of the new abilities and got a firm grasp on pros and cons of each, I will adjust all my dudes accordingly. Example: For Engy you can have Two Mines, Gatlung Turret and Pryo mine but can’t have those things AND kevlar. You can create a good 3-class Hybrid now with 24 ability points.

I find the best class is the one that specialises equally in all aspects.

I.e. You pick the class skills which are invaluable to you (Improved Weapon Buff, Lazarus Grenade, etc.) and save the ones that aren’t really that useful (Gear Head, Metabolism, etc.). As such if your team ever gets stuck in a corner, you can happily switch out and have fun with that class instead with no loss in effectiveness.

Small note, the abilities listed are purely opinionative. Not claiming said abilities are “the best” or “useless”.

Thanks for the advice guys ill get this char to 24 and respec him to a dual maybe a 3 class build if i can work one out.

(FireWorks) #6

I ran all my 10chars with 1 full class and a side class. With the new ability points I was able to have 2 quite maxed out characters. When saying maxed, I dont mean taking every single skill as you cant use them any as wolf mentioned.

The general tree is the most important of them all. They give you the right basics for playing brink as a real dynamic shooter instead of a lame camp fest. So I got them all expect the 3rd person view and the new scanner, which are both quite pointless IMO.

The all in one chars lack too many important skills. I still switch out to other classes in certain situations, but these are situations where the skills wouldnt help much and would be wasted for the most of the time where I play the mainclass(es now).

(Nexolate) #7

The way I created my uni-character is to divide the number of points equally between each class and decide which skills I really couldn’t go without. Maybe that’ll help you create a mixed character if you decide to go with a 3-class build.

I only use one character. You can see my abilities i use on my profile in the abilities tab, I pretty much just make sure i have flashes, engi kevlar, lazarus, grenade shooting, sprinting while reloading/grenades, and the supply abilities (higher resupply rate/pips). Then the rest are just for fun on public. I personally refuse to use downed fire and cortex bombs, i also dont use combat intuition or sense of perspective as i play comp, so it makes sure i dont start to rely on them and lose my sharpness.

(wolfnemesis75) #9

I can understand the staying sharp, that’s wise. I don’t bother with downed fire either because I hate respawning. So don’t want to call attention to myself and instead wait for a medic. But, you don’t use Armor piercing rounds or extra mag? Just curious. Why not?

(kronus126) #10

Why not do both? There are 10 character slots. my line up looks something like this

  1. Operative
  2. Engineer
  3. Solider
  4. Medic
  5. Solider/Engineer
  6. Solider/Medic
    7.Solider/Operative
    8.Engineer/medic
  7. Engineer/Operative
  8. All 4

The only thing I am missing is a medic/operative but those are the two I use the least so I don’t mind

(Zekariah) #11

I find using all the Rank 5 abilities (except downed fire) and then picking my favourites seems to have created my perfect JOAT.

I’m happy with it…for now.

Guna sound really bad, and slightly elitist, but, since abilities are forced in comp games, these abilities are pub only. And well, its easy enough as it is without being buffed to the teeth and with bonuses. Also you dont need the extra mag as soldier, you have unlimited ammo anyway. And fighting against people with armour is a challenge which is all i look for in games.

(wolfnemesis75) #13

Cool. I figured as much. I remember the Comp rule caps and what not. That’s what I thought. Do you use drum mags or High Cap mags on your guns?

(Runeforce) #14

Just posted this in another thread, but it fits this topic better: Firewall CP, Upgrade CP, Improved Weapon Buff and Increased Health Buff have been a must have asap on all my characters. Along with all the generel abillities, except grenade shooting.

(dabis) #15

Atm I only have 5 lvl ~20 characters, and 4 are class-specific characters in case I really feel like playing one class, and my 5th is an engineer/medic character. With my next 5 characters I will be mainly focusing on making good online characters with multiple useful skills from at least 2 classes. I play my engineer/medic the most as is.

(Hot-Wire) #16

I run 4 single class builds.
I also run 4 dual class builds.

You can check out this thread I started that discusses making a 4-class character: Jack-of-all-trades Build

Also, instead of having a character that is equally good in two classes, what about a character that specializes in one class with a few points invested into a secondary “backup” class. Sort of like your primary and secondary weapon load-out.

Here is how mine are right now:

Pure Engineer [Med.] - My favorite class (since there is no Field Ops in Brink) I have some extra points for him but, frankly, when I play him it’s because I want to play an Engineer.

Pure Operative [Light] (considering secondary class) - Not sure what to do with his secondary. Maybe Soldier so he can blow things up. That sounds like something James Bond would do, right? Anyway, he’ll have 6 extra points at level 24.

Soldier/Engineer [Heavy] - Originally a pure Soldier, I had a bunch of extra points because I didn’t invest in any of the Frag Grenade Abilities (Grenade Mastery, Frag Blast, Grenade Damage) so I decided to have him specialize in a second class. I had so many extra points I was able to get every Engineer Ability except for Extra Kevlar and Command Post Upgrade.

Pure Medic [Light] (considering secondary class) - Again, not sure what I want his secondary class to be yet. He’ll have 7 extra points at level 24.

Jack-of-all-trades [Light] - This character replaced my Gotlung heavy Soldier as my second favorite build to play after my Engineer. (Don’t feel bad big guy.) You can check out the Abilities I chose for him in the thread I linked at the top. He will have 4 extra points at level 24 and I’m considering which of the 5 new DLC Abilities I want.

Primary Soldier/Secondary Medic [Med.] - This is my newest build. Right now I’m keeping him at level 0 while I complete the 3-star challenges. Eventually I’m going to make him into a primary Soldier focused on grenade Abilities (gasp) and then throw a few points into Medic Abilities for those times when there just aren’t enough medics.

I really like the dual-spec b/c you can get most everything you need for both classes, plus relevant universals…I’ve been experimenting with a primary/secondary/panic layout with some for more in-game versatility, I run with:

Heavy soldier/medic (may go back to medium) - this guy is fun for randoms or larger matches, but i get tired of running back from the spawn, and i’m not very experienced with heavies.

Medium soldier/operative (this is one of my most played chars). dialed in (means i’m used to it, not that i’m amazing)

Med (maybe light) Eng/Op/Medic (this guy may get some more play now that i’ve added medic)…has most of what you need for Eng and Op, and the primary support skills for medic when needed (a 2nd medic on escorts, etc)

Light Eng/Op/Soldier. balanced between all 3 classes…has what you need to do damage and complete objectives in fast paced small teams style matches. Just hope there’s a good medic on my team if we have an escort objective… lol

(TheDoomSpoon) #19

I think when I get to level 24 ill respec and im gona go Medium with primary Engineer and secondary Medic as often I found a lack of medics in random matches.

Then im gona work on a Heavy with primary Soldier and secondary Medic.

(R_Shackelford) #20

I’d recommend respecing at 21. This way you can still pick level 5 abilities, and it’s a shorter run to get from 20 to 21 again than 23 to 24.

P.S. How much XP is required for level 24 (and 22 and 23)? I think 20 to 21 is 42000 (300000 to 342000).
