Choppy FPS with decent kit... (WinXP, P4, nVidia)

(TheChill) #1

Howdy, I’ve just reinstalled ET after an upgrade and I’ve noticed that:

A) The VSync toggle option ingame doesn’t seem to work. It maxes out the
FPS in the high 90’s, regardless of the refresh rate. This gives me choppy
frames.

B) GL_EXTENSIONS, when enabled, resolve the issue and the FPS is in line
with the monitor’s refresh rate. But - here’s the boner - in many areas,
the FPS will effectively half. I.e., running a refresh rate of 85Hz, far too
frequently the FPS will drop from 85 frames per second down to 42 frames
per second. This is God awful. Worse than having my testicles removed
with a carving knife. (Or it comes a close second.)

My spec is P4 3.2GHz, a Gig of Corsair RAM, and Ti4200 (yup, I know - but I’m
broke), under XP. Oh, and ForceWare 56.somethingorother. I’ve tried a fair
few different version of Detonator and ForceWare, but the problem persists.
For what it’s worth, it’s the same with Quake 3 too.

Anyone out there have any ideas how to go about making it not be, er, there?
More gooderer, you might say. Liker, er, well smooth. Or something.

do you have the latest motherboard drivers ?

You can control the max frame rate with com_maxfps.

If you have vsync on, and can’t quite produce that frame rate, you will be suddenly dropped to half (since it has to wait for the next scan). Depending on your com_maxfps (default 85 or 90 ?) there may be some rounding which causes this to happen even if your comp is plenty fast.

A 3.2GHZ and ti4200 should be plenty for smooth gameplay, so keep workin on it.

You almost certainly want GL_EXTENSIONS to be on.

Many video options will override what the application reqests, so messing with your display driver control panel might resolve your vsync issue.

My default framerate is 40FPS and far to often it drops down to 20 FPS or worse… how about a little sympathy for me here ?? :bored:

i cap my fps to 76 and most of the time thay will stay there but sometimes i will drop down to around 40fps too.
I run my game max everything 2x fsaa 8x aniscopic filtering 1152, 854 rez.

2600xp@ 2800xp (can run everything else BUT et @ 3300xp :/)
abit nf7
1gig pc 3200
9800pro 128meg
audigy2 zs

after a reinstall the game defaults to cg_maxfps 90. try chaning that

your system should be plenty good for ET as p4 and g4’s love the game. am not shure if u need to install AGP drivers for intell chipset’s as ive never owned one  but i know if someone didint install there agp drivers for an amd system it would have that kind of affect your getting. As for g4 drivers i heard the last version of the det’s are about the best drivers for it. The Forceware drivers are realy for the FX range (wich sucks imho).

Did you use nasty nvidia remover after u removed drivers?? could be that some older drivers are still affecting the curent ones you have installed. Or it could be down to something running in your system background like Nortin AV.

I say try some DET drivers after you have used NNR (find it in google np) and if that dosnt work hit ALT,CTRL,DEL and close down anything you dont need and see what happens then. good luck.

40 FPS? You’re seriously whining about 40 FPS? I’d take a good 40 FPS anyday.

If I’d have this system, I’d whine too if ET wouldn’t run at least at 400FPS!

It’s a shame that he has a system that nice and he doesn’t know how to use it. -----WoRd :skull:

Once again, I have EXACTLY THE SAME FPS IN EVERY POSSIBLE SETTING WITH
Radeon 8500 LE 128MB
Celeron 1.8GHz
256MB 266MHz DDR RAM

Is anybody going to fix the rendering code?

far cry on medium runs about as well as ET with my Uber Fugly Cfg ™. A lot better in open areas.
