Cheater or Game Bug?

I was playing fuel dump today as an allied soldier w/ a mobile mg42. I noticed I was having difficulty moving in the prone position. I finally realized there was a field op lying on top of me. It was funny the first time, annoying the second, and the third time I tried to waste him. I must have unloaded 100 rounds into his head at point blank range, blood flying, no effect. He ran away, I followed, pouring fire into him. NFG. I should have written down his name. This was a Punkbuster server. Is this some rare hacker in invulnerable mode, or what? I thought punkbuster was supposed to weed these assholes out.

You know, I didn’t even think to notice, I don’t think I’ve ever been on a no FF server. That’s at least a comforting possibility, but I seem to remember getting fragged by a team-mate. Now I’ll always wonder. I have run into a few suspect players, but I wouldn’t know what to look for unless it was really blatant.

Always note which server you’re playing on, and record a demo when you see something suspicious. There’s a lot of helpful people who can help you check these things.

also note that firing the mg42 from your hip is almost useless. It’s accuracy sucks so bad at the hip.

Heh, I like to lie on top of deployed mobile MG42’s when I’m a covert op with a uni. It’s a great laugh when you see them keep redeploying 3 times and wondering, WTF?

yea it ws prolly becuz u didnthit him much the only way to close range like that with a mg42 is to get them in a corner right in front of u and push ur mouse down and down

sry dude but big lol on that crap! i never got any support or even attention with my recorded aimbot demos.
it’s a fact that server admins are lazy and don’t do shit about cheating/hacking.

First of all I wasn’t referring to server admins, I meant that friendly people on boards like this (maybe not you) are willing to help determine if a suspected cheater actually is one. Most times it’s something else… In this specific case I could have determined if the server had FF off in less than 30 seconds if I only had the server name and/or IP.

Second… Not all server admins are like that. I suggest you don’t play on servers where the admins ignore you if you have actual proof of aimbotters.

I dispise ALL generalisations. :smiley:

no offence meant sry. but regarding topics about cheating/hacking i’m very touchy after living/playing in this situation for a few years now.
i already got to the point where i want to announce big multiplayer cheating websites on every server i play on, i don’t do so, yet.

joker PB trawl known cheating sites and block cheats that get put there - but of course it takes some time. The approach worked very well in RTCW because when a player is detected once by PB for cheating, he’s banned by GUID from the server forever, and any “known” player risks having his reputation destroyed - itself the biggest deterrent to cheating of all. This doesnt work so well for ET since its all too easy to create a new “cdkey”, though it at least does retain the risks for players trying to build a reputation etc (clanned players mainly), since at best they have to dissapear and then pretend to be someone else.

Demos, well demos dont exactly show much, watch some top teams in action at LANs (where you can be certain of no hacks being used) and you’ll see just how well skilled experienced players can figure out and predict exactly what the other team are doing. While spectating, it often comes to mind how many players dont even seem to use headphones with the sound up, using your ears and understanding it through experience can give you rather a lot of information about what is happening around the corner or the other side of that wall - just running around makes a right racket, and mp40 is easily distinguished from thompson. Some players might be playing with friends or clanmates and using voice comms, which might explain them knowing something they couldnt otherwise have known.

Further, admins cant exactly go around banning players on the basis that their behavior “looks a bit dodgy on a demo”. Combine the difficulty of having any reasonable certainty of cheating from a demo, the need for actual evidence, and the ease at which the player can just bypass the ban anyway, and you’ll see why admins can appear “lazy”. Passing suspicions on to tournament admins is liable to be more effective, since the nature of competition structure makes them more easily monitored, but dont expect any remotely clued in tourney admin to go accusing a player of cheating just because you thought they looked a bit dodgy.

PB detections of a player cheating in logs however is highly convincing, and I think its true to say that most decent admins will update their banfiles with this info. Using the information in the logs admin can determine multiple bans from similar IPs and then block IP quartile ranges - requiring persistent cheater to go change ISP in order to aviod it. (more detail for admins here if desired).

Announcing “big multiplayer cheating websites on every server i play on” isnt exactly going to reduce cheating and is a easy way to get yourself banned from every server where an admin notices it. Having everyone paranoid about cheaters is worse than the actual cheaters anyway, have a thought about the effects on the community. fwiw, PB does an excellent job to block cheating, given the extent of the task, and few players have an inclination to cheat anyway (far more have an inclination to cry cheater just because they got owned by someone with skill+experience).

Yes, it’s immature people like joker that get on my nerves.

I run a server (which I might add costs alot of money) that is open to the public. Then along come little know nothings who start mouthing off about how lazy all the admins are.

Esspecially when I’ve seen some of these “accusations”
