Certain # of Posts Before Thread Creation

(DarkangelUK) #1

Obviously there’s an influx of new users, and that’s all good and well… what do people think of having a minimum post amount before being able to create a thread? Obviously if there’s a ‘Technical Issues’ section that shouldn’t be included… but my lordy… the repeatypeatness! Thoughts?

EDIT: Actually, thinking about it, that would probably just create quite the spamfest in existing threads… still… i’d like to hear some thoughts anyway.

I also found a couple of mods that merge double posts into single posts if posted within a certain timeframe.

All kinds of problems with this. As an elitist snob myself I would applaud it as it would scare the majority of lazy forum goers away on their first visit.

A ‘portal’ thread linking to the most popular and useful topics would be more suitable. Most gaming forums I visit have those things anyway. We could hold a nomination in this thread.

I wonder if there’s a plugin that takes the thread title, and when you hit ‘post’, it then searches the existing topics, and if there’s something like >80% match, it then says “the following topics already exist with a similar title, would you still like to create this topic?” and links to them.

this place really reminds me of our site in it’s heyday, I must have answered 1000 openGL posts every week, it’s very frustrating but a very good thing for Splash Damage, traffic counts in so many different ways to their business. All this insanity is good for SD, we have to remember that, it sucks for us old timers, but we ain’t it, new Brink players are

I’m going to revise our mapping and modding section if I can and try hold the W:ET stuff on our forums

We’re outnumbered lads, let’s try use our “senior” status to keep things as civilised as we can

(DarkangelUK) #5

Yeah I guess I (grudgingly) agree… though I would like the double post merger mod implemented

(Nail) #6

not disagreeing with you

(shagileo) #7

Well I’m not sure about this
If you have a problem with mapping, for instance, (ok most likely your problem has already been covered) it would be a pain in the butthole to post in other topics first before you could actually ask your question in a new topic.

However, the following idea is as awesome as your reputation:

the following topics already exist with a similar title, would you still like to create this topic?"

should be something to consider

Yeah I thought about that, not sure if it’d be possible to restrict thread creation in specific sections. So for example the general brink section requires a certain post count to create threads, but stuff like technical section or brink mapping etc should be free for anyone to create threads.

Tbh though I think the amount of spam created in existing threads would outweigh the amount of duplicate threads.

And yeah Nail, I lol’d at your post when I saw it

(Slade05) #9

Maybe diversify it, so some, erm, newfriend can create topics in specialized sections right from the start, but not in the general discussion at least?

(Nail) #10

I think the general Brink section should be a redirect to Bethesda
there’s very few idiot posts in the mapping and modding sections, I like this place being a tech forum, not a clan splatter, bitch fest

(Herandar) #11

Literally took me the past five hours just to read the Brink Forum. (I should learn to skim more, I know.) I’m truly hoping this dies down next week with the game’s release. If not, well, this Feedback forum feels a bit like a safe haven…

(DarkangelUK) #12

May sound silly, but I like the idea of having a ‘safe haven’. The Red vs Blue forums do something similar, they have a ranking system where providing posting on your journal, getting pos rep for feedback etc boosts your level, and they have a section where those above a certain level are only allowed to access.

I was gonna say ‘those that have been here for x amount of years’, but you’re a perfectly level headed person Herander and you joined in 2010 so that’s not a fair metric to use.

Splash knows better than to hand over any game forums after what Activision did, I believe.

(Herandar) #15

What’s really sad is that I only really started posting here in late January 2011. Had maybe eight posts in 2010.

(tokamak) #16

Not on Vbulletin. Reddit has it though.

Haha yeah it does, the heathens haven’t yet found this sanctuary.

(Pegazus) #17

Don’t we have freedom of speech? If this idea gets a green light in this forum will be like under a dictator rule.
Enough with the changes already, it’s nauseating.

(tokamak) #18

Freedom of Speech does not apply to private websites.

(xTriXxy) #19

scotland turned into socialistic or communistic state?

darkangel, maybe in your life you are not allowed to do certain things until some condition is achieved, but this is internet, last place of free speech.

thats why EU is retarded group or random states, with retarded laws, because of retarded people.

And here it begins.
