CD/DVD or DVD

(Demolama) #1

I was looking on Activision’s site today and I noticed that QW is listed as PC DVD-Rom and not PC CD-Rom like Quake 4 or Doom 3. Is it safe to assume that they are phasing out the CD releases from now on for future games as well? Does this mean I need to spend 16 bucks to get a DVD drive for QW? Or can I expect a CD and a DVD release?

Just curious so I can spend the money now and pick up the game and play as soon as it comes in instead of waiting for the DVD drive to come in after I notice that the game isnt coming in CD format.

ps. yes I being cheap by waiting on getting DVD Rom until I really need one :stuck_out_tongue:

Then the question: Is your PC even capable of running ETQW as it has no DVD-ROM drive… Even PIII machines came standard with one…

(Demolama) #3

I put together my own rig… so yes its more than able to play… I however never needed a dvd drive so I never bothered to put in one… much like why put in a firewire outlet when you dont even use it

hey I’m being cheap … not trying to shell out 50 bucks for the game and another 16 for a drive

so you don’t even have a dvd burner? how do you backup your sys/files?

in an interview it was mentioned that the game will ship on dvd. the interesting question is: how many? if only one, is it DVD-5 or DVD-9?

I’d get that DVD drive if I were you

And I thought I was late to the party (only got a DVD drive a couple of years ago)…

Here in Europe all big games have been dvd-only releases for some years now, and i think they should be everywhere, as dvd is more popular and about the same price as cd.

(Demolama) #8

people actually do this?

I just partition the drive so that the OS is by itself… if it goes bad I just reinstall… I lose nothing important other than updates but thats not a big deal

(Ghiacciolo=ITA=) #9

why don’t put dvd drives or firewire is a good idea in a “QW-capable-rig”?? so u have the pleasure to dismantle your rig again the first time u need one of them??!

is time not important?

Alright, enough bashing the guy for his choice of hardware

ETQW will only be available on DVD, so you will need a DVD drive to install it.

(murka) #12

i remember HL2, bought it on 5cd-s(or was it 4) cuz i didnt have a DVD drive, i couldnt go away from the install cuz every second it might jump up with “please insert disc x”. I bought one… now when smb asked me if i have a floppy drive they laughed at me cuz i didnt have one(really, any need for it?)
and ppl dont buy some pc-s that are put toghether by the company and you just go and buy, you have to select your hardware.

That’s cool, Wils, but just a little question if you can answer: DVDs are about something like 4.7 G of data storage & with the 12 maps of the game, based on big areas (as it seems) with big cool Megatextures, won’t all this break this storage limit ?

In other words: will the game contain, let’s say, 2 DVD for instance to store all this ?

DVD5 is only 4.7 but DVD9 (dual layer) is about 8.5

Damn, no floppy’s.

(Ghiacciolo=ITA=) #16

Sad but true…thanks to dear microsoft the floppy drive is essential!!
:frowning: in fact, if u don’t have one, you cannot install the required 3td party drivers for raid setups…coz windows xp is so crappy that can’t read the drivers from USB!!! :x

Anyway, returning on*topic, i noticed that now every game (for example r6 or C&C3) are about 6/7 Gb…so whitout a dvd, how can they be distributed?

(Salteh) #17

I don’t have a floppy drive either. Most modern ‘SATA chipsets’ can be found by winXP’s install cd, for the rest there are app like nlite which allow you to add your own drivers to the XP installation cd.

(thepiman) #18

Damn, no floppy’s.

Have you ever tried to install windows 95 with Floppy disks? It’s not fun

do you have any idea how many floppies it would take to install Quake Wars.
12 maps
500 megs/map
lets say 500megs for everything else (i don’t know the actual numbers)

6500 MB.

1.38 (after format) Mb/ disk = 4710 floppy disks
if each disk is 3mm thick then the stack would be…

1413 cm tall or 14.13m F@##$$k that’s a lot of disks

(murka) #19

use 2.4 MB floppys then

(thepiman) #20

2.4 MB floppies would only cut the stack in about half

come on SD make a copy on Floppies and set the world record at the same time.
