Carentan - WIP map

after seeing shagileo thread, i decided to create my own… so here it is.

Carentan, France

the map is a conversion from call of duty 2. the map is fully hand made, wich means no decompiling were involved during development at all… and like on italy, i do pay a lot of attention to details.

the brushwork etc is pretty much finished - i’m looking for volunteers to join the project (especially someone who could help with blending textures using dotproduct or something similar).

Wow… I thought I was looking at CoD2 screenshots at first! Amazing attention to detail, it looks exactly the same… Can’t fault it from the screenshots.

Do you have any objectives planned or is it just deathmatch? Try making a CTF version, that would be cool!

i had ctf in mind, but some ppl are against it because it’s not symetric if u know what i mean…

sunny and few others wanted to have a real objective, like escorting vehicle etc… i still didn’t decided :wink: but i can always make 2 versions…

and just in case - the nazi swastika won’t be in official pk3, it will be replaced with a cross (like in metal slug)

I have some complaints.

Why make two exactly same maps, when you knew very well that shag and manwhore were working on it for about a year. ( and don’t tell me, let the community decide wich is best, i am very aware of your words )

“wich means no decompiling” hard to belive but ok, let’s leave that part out as it’s clear with the map Streets of Italy, atleast the models and textures are not yours. :stroggbanana:

In total, this is the biggest worst thing by you yet, crashing Shagileos and Manwhores work, and yes the other map is for Vietnam mod, but they are the same concept.

With that being saied, i doubt it was all done by yourself with no decompile, as it toke Shag and Manwhore double the time to get that far.

Agreed. terrible time to show off your work. I don’t believe you didn’t decompile either!

i’ll pay 100 bucks for the guy who can show a working decompiler for cod2 maps. the only thing u can ‘decompile’ is entities - you get the origins and so, that’s all.

i don’t know how long shagileo was working on his map, but the truth is, i started carentan last year, before i knew that he was working on such map too. i even gave him all the cod1 textures for carentan at that time, because i wasnt sure if i will ever finish this map.

Well, I know this day was coming, so permit me to properly situate this awkward situation:

Guess it was some time in October, when IndyJones came to know that Shagileo and me were recreating Carentan. Do note that, at that time, we were building an exact copy of Carentan of our own, as well. IndyJones asked if he could take a look at our map; we send him our .bsp and he hosted it on his server. He commented the brushwork and texturing, suggesting we should use his CoD1 texture pack. He also said he once had the intention of remaking Carentan, too, but never fully got to it. However, now he had seen our work, he decided to get on with his Carentan, as well. He also urged us not to call our map Carentan, rather “Streets of France” or something like it… You’ll understand the sending of our map to IndyJones was a very bad move, indeed.

We hoped he’d never actually finish his Carentan; judging from the quality of Streets of Italy, we knew he’d get his version done much faster and better. In the process, Shagi and me decided to give our Carentan a complete Vietnamese flavor, in honor of our VS friends, who host their magnificent Vietnam mod. However, we had never abolished the idea that, one day, we’d release a public Carentan, CoD look, too. Guess we’ll have to now, as we cannot compete with someone working who’s able to rebuild an entire CoD map from scratch in just a month’s time or so, as he also has been working on another CoD map which I believe to be released very soon, too…

wait, are you trying to say that i used your .bsp to make my own? because i can’t see how could it be a bad move… i’m pretty sure i don’t even have it anymore on my hdd.

edit: i found the pk3, dated at 16.11.08. had to decompile to show the map in radiant… because i think that’s why u think it was a bad move, meaning, i based mine on yours? you are wrong.

I am implying no such thing. It just seems sending our map to you rekindled your carentan mapping drive; that is why I deem this to be a bad move.

Anyways, any truly dedicated and honourful mapper out there will agree that this situation sucks pretty hard, as now, a lot of work and effort have been reduced to a lesser project compared to that of a true mapping machine.

no, it didn’t… besides, there are 2 or 3 more already made carentans for et - check wolfmap.de. you weren’t the first who started it.

my project is the first on quake 3 engine that can be truly compared to cod2 version.

by the way - some carentan buildings are availabe as official prefabs for cod2.

All Carentans that do not make a perfect match to the CoD version or which at least haven’t been released by two mappers at the very same time.

And that last aspect is just what this situation is all about…

I think that’s not the point here?

It’s obvious that there are already other versions of Carentan before 2008… That was not the purpose of Shagileo and manwhore to start building the map. I have followed their progress very closely and i can truly speak that things as they happen now are not the most fair way to reward hard efforts and work.

Initially we wanted to thank our befriended clan VS by making a BETTER and extended (!) and VIETNAM styled form of Carentan itself. Contrary to what my guts says about you, I can assure you that manwhore and Shagi made all themselves, like a drawer sitting on the town plaza drawing the church as it stands there in the city (comparison)… I’ve seen them work on it and it’s all done with their bare hands and from the heart (like I said, as a tribute to VS)

So, the purpose was not to make again another version of it. Manwhore and shagi made, according to me, a bad move by sending you their progress, as it triggered your initial plans to make another version of the map.

As it looks now, I also intend to support manwhore and Shagi to finish the map, not only in Viet style, but also CoD.

Question to you: what .pk3 dates from 16.11.08 with you?

Pretty messed up situation

Well here’s the thing: you say that you send us the CoD1 textures (which is true),

So at that time (somewhere in october) you weren’t sure if you’d ever finish your version. Also at that time you knew then that we were making our version. Here comes the question: why then build (or finish or whatever you had to do) your version? :frowning:
if you knew we were certainly making one…

Before I knew you were almost finishing up, it was already too late.

It’s really a pitty, because we put so much effort, time and love into it, and now it seems all for nothing. Yes, we will release our version anyway, but a PERFECT replica (and I don’t mean decompiling issues here, so don’t pick on that) of the Carentan map is too hard to compete (although we also made an almost perfect replica).

I was more hoping you’d be working on your other CoD based map which would be original and good looking
(with original I mean: it would be a first version of that map for ET). This is silly

If you manage to get textures, models from COD, SOF, CS and any other game I am sure it wont be hard for you to get map files decompiled.

Now Indy, for once be a man and stop fooling around. You had your fame for a moment, came in as a newcomer, showed off “your” work, then came out you are not so good after all.
My suggsestion, go back to what you did before.

And STOP giving other people Texture packs from other games, i think community deserves more people who put effort and are honest of there work instead of you. There are thousands of you and all of them are in the shame of darkness.

getting textures is a diffrent thing. look at all these soundpacks… they are all rip offs from other games, like i said, this map wasn’t decompiled but built from scratch, brush by brush.

right now i don’t have any release date in mind… let’s say when it’s done. i still have to work on blending, add objective, clip models, then test it all and so…

to clear things up - i sent cod2 textures to shagileo (the one i’m using), but he used textures from cod1 (i didn’t send them to him).

  • did u use textures i sent u?
  • no, we used the CoD1 textures

Looks like you set out to steal their thunder, which you have! Could have at least waited for the release of their map before deciding to be an ass and go and complete one yourself.
