Can you have fun and win at the same time?

(Jurmabones) #1

I feel like way too many people in pubs think trying to play well and win can’t be fun. Whenever I say something or see someone else say something to teammates making a poor merc choice (the 4th bushwhacker, etc.), or just playing poorly, there’s almost always someone with a response along the lines of, “lol im not trying im just having fun stfu”.

Personally I always had more fun winning. Losing can be fun too in a good game, but come on, who doesn’t like winning more?

Do you think victory and fun can be had at the same time? Or do you think just the effort of even doing anything at all useful or relevant to winning takes away the fun of any game?

So, there’s no option for both? In fact, both options imply losing is more fun than winning.

When playing on public servers (aka not in competitive mode), you need to respect the fact that not everyone plays to “win”.

Personally I tend to vary my goals depending on how well my team is working together in that particular round. Too many times have I went into full “Win at all costs”-mode just to end up frustrated about the fact that my teammates weren’t “good enough”.

If my team is sub-par (as is often the case on public servers), I tend to play to win for myself. Sort of.
I play as good as I can, racking up kills/score to feel that I atleast had a good game, even though I realize the chances of actually winning the round itself are rather slim.

If I want to play competitively, I play competitive mode. Easy.

I feel the poll is biased and could use a few more options to make it more valid.

I get fun with winning when,if it is fair one for both sides.

I only change for “at all costs” mode or “do not anger me” when someone doesn’t have

secondary objective mission and does it but i have it and he blocks the mission

progress(when i usually ask,if someone have x mission so i do not need to annoy someone

or make him leave the room).

(Jurmabones) #5

This doesn’t make any sense to me. Could you explain what you mean by that?

(Ghosthree3) #6

Depends on how good my team is. If I need to go full try-hard to stand a chance of winning it’s often a lot less fun than when I can relax and not really try to do much.

(DMaster2) #7

I play a lot in pubs especially to learn new mercs or try new loadouts, so i don’t give a damn about what the others think of my merc choice or my performance. I have fun as long as the game is balanced enough, where one team don’t roflstomp the other

(Fiktio) #8

For me it really doesn’t matter are we losing or winning as long as playing the game is fun.
If team takes it way too seriously and shout in-game voicechat “AREN’T YOU EVEN TRYING?!??!?” while team is truly trying to give the best, that’s a thing that will drop the quality immediately what comes about having fun.
Sometimes you have to understand that not everybody plays the game like you do.
You are not playing with 7 copies of yourself in the same team, everybody are different and playing styles are different. Going nuts in the chat usually will not help much.

However it doesn’t mean that you have to lose every time for being able to have fun and I really doubt that people aren’t able to have some fun by winning. I’m sure not so many are losing for purpose.
What comes about choices of mercs, I respect those players that take a look what kind of mercs others are going to play with and the player changes the merc if it’s better for the team. I understand that people have favorite mercs, but sometimes they should also understand that for the team it might be better idea to play awhile with another merc.
For example I was in the server with 4 Vasillis and none of them wanted to change the merc. Of course we lost and maybe those Vasilli players realized it would be better idea to not have 4 Vasillis in the same team. Maybe they realized it, maybe not.
Well, I can’t always get a dream team to play with.

Your poll is incredibly loaded, to the point of absurdity, there is basically only one option.

Perhaps a better way of phrasing it would be in terms of priorities because nobody wants to lose so asking that is ultimately pointless. The idea that making any attempt to win cannot be fun is also a bizarre concept that nobody will ever think.

Often people will prioritise having fun over winning the match and sometimes people will be willing to do something they don’t enjoy as much (but hopefully still to some degree) in order to help win.

(SaulWolfden) #10

It depends if bad luck keeps happening to me (for example every airstrike just happens to kill me at the very edge of it) or if my team is just bad (to the point where the score I have is generally more than everyone or almost everyone on the enemy team even as one person can rarely carry an entire team. Unbalanced teams are also not fun.

When I get into funny fights, go on a rampage with the Kukri for instance, or the teams are actually balanced I generally enjoy myself.

(Edzer) #11

Mkay this thread is kinda weird. Don’t see how you cannot have fun and win and the same time. Then again, I always have fun playing the game no matter the outcome.

Having to hardcarry games doesn’t make it less fun for me, I like challenging games.

(ttownjoe) #12

i’m usually just messing around helping my teammates on the path to an easy win.

(brennanfreak) #13

I have fun if both teams are struggling to win…
(I always wanna win though  )

(Jostabeere) #14

Who the hell is even having fun at losing? Why they even play PvP then?

(Jurmabones) #15

More or less my view on it. In a game where one or more people are put against other people, isn’t everyone’s intention to win? I always thought so.

I don’t see why some people act like trying to win and having fun are two different things when they’re same. Key phrase, not just winning, but TRYING to win. Of course winning is best, but the main goal is to have a close game where every player is trying to win. That makes for the best games imo.

(Fap Fap Master) #16

Excuse me sir, but are you aware of how bias this poll is.

(Jurmabones) #17

Unfortunately I can’t edit the poll options, otherwise I would. I agree with people about the poll options, I wish I could change them for you guys. I apologize for that.

(N8o) #18

If the team I am playing against is amazing and has good teamwork, I enjoy that game a lot, even if we lose.
Also, this poll is a tad bias. You either enjoy winning or enjoy losing.

Well, you’re kinda right. But there is a difference between a good game where you lose after a long and great game where one team was slightly better and if a team is dominating you and you have a team full of meatbags and you can’t score points even if you could destroy that team with better mates. I hate having a team that can’t do jack shit even if my opponent it great.

(RenLou) #20

Didn’t answer the poll simply because fun, to me, is about winning, but with a challenge.

Why attach fun to a win/lose condition ONLY? Sure winning is awesome, no one likes to lose. But that doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t find a match fun even if you lost. To me, it all comes down to how fair a fight was, how intense and how much effort it required of my team to win.

Challenge is what makes games fun for me. Not just the state of winning. I mean, it’s pretty much like movies and anything that have some sort of challenge. Even life is like this. I much prefer to watch a movie where the good guys struggle throughout it and don’t win all the time than a shitty action movie where no one and nothing can stop the good guy.

That’s why I get super bitchy when a match is super unbalanced and usually the team that is winning refuses to vote to shuffle. Like, FFS is your self-confidence really that low that you have to crush noobs in order to feel good? Shuffle that shit and make it more of a challenge. Every single time, even when I’m on the team that is winning and I see it’s clearly unbalanced I will vote to shuffle, guess what happens? Vote failed and get called a whiny cunt.

Sometimes the community is to blame for a game’s condition. I’ll tell you hwat
