Can we have an option to disable skins please?

Since the day I started playing Dirty Bomb I’ve long struggled with one seemingly simple task - being able to tell which team a nearby player is on. If a player is too close I am unable to see the team marker over their head or lack thereof. With nothing to go by except for color… I still have nothing to go by. The overwhelming majority of skins leave a merc merely tinged with their team’s color. Cobalts and obsidians take it a step further and allow mercs to be the color of the opposing team. In some extreme cases, such as an enemy (red team) cobalt Kira, a merc can be almost entirely covered with the wrong color.

I find the whole situation to be an embarrassment to the game. I can’t recall one other game where I’ve struggled as much with team identification, and that’s including TF2 which has Spies that can literally take on the appearance of an another player. Ideally the game would have been designed from the group up with visual clarity as a priority, but I’m afraid it’s too late to completely undo the mistakes that have been made. After all, players have invested lots of time and/or money in obtaining their fancy skins.

Rather than removing or altering the existing skin unlocks, I’d prefer the default skins be improved to be more clearly team colored. Then players should be given an option to disable all skin unlocks. When used, the color differences would be applied to weapons only. This would allow a player using the option to still see whichever skin they have equipped. It would also make sure that everyone could still notice the fancy loadouts their allies and enemies were using - red, blue, gold, and silver don’t need to be present in large quantities to stand out.

I think this is a great idea! I STILL accidentally shoot some of my red-skinned team mates, so giving an option to turn them off would be excellent.

Personally, I would also really like to see options that you can alter to turn off ALL skins, meaning all guns and player models will appear default.

I don’t see any drawbacks to this, lets do it SD!

Get glasses, people use skins so that others can see their awesomeness and luck. There would be no point to skins if they can be turned off.

(HoopleDoople) #4

If the weapons were left colored the skins would still have a point. Plenty of games have skins only for weapons that people find quite desirable.

I’m also not sure how better vision would make any difference when a 90% blue colored enemy Kira pops on your screen for a tenth of a second.

(Supa) #5

No one is arguing WHY cosmetics exist. What do you mean there would be no point? People who want to see them can see them while others can turn them off. Either way, the loadout cards are still going to be there.

You are acting as if this option will completely ruin rarity and loadout cards overall. Some plainly find it distracting and it obviously affects game play for a lot of players. Others like cosmetics for the rarities and cool designs, and that is cool too. A lot of players just like to have consistency.

(Ctrix) #6

It’s really fucking easy. Your team mates have blue names floating over their head.

@Supa, it will ruin it. Because all decent players will turn cosmetics off, because it might give them an advantage and doesn’t make the game any worse.
You people are dumb and you should feel dumb. I have no patience for this sort of idiocy.

(Daergar) #7

Even when we’re discussing team identification, one of the most crucial items on any list when it comes to shooters, there are still people rushing out of the woodwork to defend cosmetics over gameplay.

I would say that I’m amazed though that’d be a lie.

No-one should ever be in doubt when it comes to friend and foe in an arcade shooter, period. The rest is fluff and must be designed around this one little magical nugget of importance.

Which is why, and I loathe to use it even for examples, CS customizes weapons and not the entire character’s visual appearance. There is a reason for this. Don’t be stupid.

Agree on this, higher rarity will completly lose it’s value if this is implemented.

Maybe you can try on your own to tweak the colors of ennemies and friendlies to see if one setup help. Then, feel free to put your config here so that Dev can have a look at it.

I had no confusion on figuring out a teammate and an enemy even at the beginning stages .
As someone already said , there are blue color icon and name above your teammates and also has a light blue glowing tone applied overall . The enemy team have a orange glow above the skin .
But your idea isn’t bad in general . It would make the game more easy to read . But that would be a total re-buliding of the game .
Also who the hell uses default loadouts anyway .
Sry , but such an option would make loadouts senseless ( even if the gun has camo). And it would definitely destroy the fun .

(Jostabeere) #11

If you don’t use one of those stupid configs, you see red and blue shimmer. Even cobalts are easy to see for me.

(signofzeta) #12

Freak, I don’t know, make a setting where you see all attackers have a black and purple skin, while the defenders wear white and yellow.

Dirty Bomb is like playing ice hockey, with all the players wearing whatever color jersey they want, and the only thing that has to be consistent with the team is the color of their helmet.

Just by looking at the player model itself, Brink has the problem of not being able to tell what class the player is, but you can tell which side that player is on, and Dirty Bomb has the problem of not being able to tell which side the player is on, but you can tell what class they are.

To those people that say the team marker is there for a reason:
If the enemy is close enough that you cant see the marker then you have to depend on the visuals. In an occasion where 1 sec can determine win or loss this small identification problem can be a deciding factor.
I have already seen it a few times when an enemy with cobalt skin mixed in a group of my team and slaughter all because everyone was confused who is shooting.
The red gold skins and the obsidian skins are still ok (maybe you waste some shots on them sometimes) but the shiny blue cobalt skins are really misleading in close combat. (I think some logitech skins are the same)
I still dont understand SDs fixation on blue. Cant they use a different color?

The option to turn off skins seems like the best compromise to me. Personally i dont care for other skins and only occasionally admire my own

Future skins should take this more into considaration

(sentimentalDime) #14

I’ve never once had this problem. I think the red colouring that enemies get are there for a reason, if that isn’t enough, i’d say maybe you should get your eyesight checked. I don’t know if it’s possible to get that red colouring removed through messing with the options, if so, and you did it, you should default it back to normal.

I still think people need to be more careful on those situations. Especially if you already know an enemy is cobalt. On doubt fire, to be on the safe side. If it’s a friendly then no prob

(MarsRover) #16

In general I disagree, but enemy Cobalt Kira is very blue and has fooled me at least twice. I heard the same thing about Phoenix’s helmet. A Cobalt skin review and some small revisions should be enough.

(Fiktio) #17

Sometimes I wonder is it the case that people see some colors a bit differently in general, but I also disagree with this idea of yours, HoopleDoople.

Even if the enemy player is too close for me being able to read his red name, I can still see the red glow on them. Red is warning color of danger, so for me it’s good enough to tell who is a team mate and who is an enemy.

Also people are using real money for being able to get some extra bling bling and when they can see only a skin of the weapon from their in-game view, they know very well that others can see their clothing skin better way. I think that might be the reason why SD didn’t limit skins to be only on weapons. Instead of that they made skins for clothing and weapons.
Instead of giving an option for players being able to disable skins, in my eyes it would be better if some “problematic skins” could get a second though from devs and maybe they could change some visual looks of few skins.
That would be so much better option without ruining the meaning of having clothing skins.

(LifeupOmega) #18

My only issue with skins are Cobalt ones, that’s too much blue for an enemy. Maybe they should just switch it to red/blue depending on team.

Just because we have a disagreement, it doesn’t mean that we are idiots… Have an intelligent argument rather than passing someone off as idiotic. Some of us just like consistency, so we would prefer some of them to be turned off.

In all honesty, How would it ruin it? All you say was that it would be an “advantage”. In what way? Being able to INSTANTLY tell that it is an enemy? I think that should be in the game already, don’t you? As some of said, an excellent example are the Cobalts on the enemy team. This shouldn’t even occur in a game like this.

It seems like a lot of people LIKE these cosmetics, so they would keep it on. BUT for those who don’t want to hesitate and think “Oh wait, is that an enemy or a friendly?” it may be a good idea. I have been playing since the closed beta and I still have this problem now and again.

See, this is my point. You shouldn’t have to be careful and “doubt fire.” The instant you see someone, you should be able to tell if they are an enemy or friendly. If friendly fire comes into public games, this isn’t necessarily an option.
