Can we change the map of Europe image

I’d like to make a map in Japan… There are several scenarios that would work. One of which involves the nazis bringing supplies to the Japanese on U-Boats. It could be something like the nazis have to unload the ship, and get the supplies to the japanese bunker.

Another scenario was, I believe the japanese/nazis were working on an atomic bomb, and there was a U-Boat mission where they were sending the material they were working on (I believe it was just radioactive material) to Japan or bringing it from Japan back to Germany to work/test on… That could be another thing.

There are also some russian maps that could be made, or ALTERNATE TIMELINE maps, where the fighting happens on American soil… The simple question is, can we add a custom map image for when the level loads, so we can place the position of the battle location in the appropriate place?

I think this map is jpeg/tga image file propable in pak0.pk3 file.

Yes, but if you replace it with your own image, it will replace the image for ALL maps! This is a file common to all maps, and therefore should not be replaced. If you do, you and your map will get a bad rap.

even if you can not replace the europe map you should still make maps from other continents. It’d be nice to attack a japanese temple in a jungle or to storm a new york skyscraper or something. If you make a good map i doubt anyone will hold it agianst you that it does not have an accurate marker on the loading screen

I agree, and this is a whole lot better than replacing the map image.

Well, I think the default image should officially be replaced by an image of the whole world, because of how the map community is coming alive.

Well you can still place a smal map of japan on that little ‘foto’ in the upper-left corner… :poke:

theres no need for a map of the whole world as WW2 was mainly in Europe and this is a WW2 game =P

Sorry to burst your bubble, but WW2 was also in the Pacific Ocean, the continental United States, Japan, Hawaii, Asia (russia).

You know the Japanese bombed the United States, right? They bombed Oregon.

We won’t be able to add in Japanese players unless someone makes a mod, but I think it’s a good request that SplashDamage makes a TINY TINY fix to the map, and either changes it to a world map or makes it so you can specify the Pacific or Europe.

Well if someone makes a mod, then they can also change the map image to whatever they like. The map image CAN NOT BE CHANGED for vanilla ET play. Every map provides its own screen coordinates for where their icon shows up on the map. If you replace the image, then every map that has ever been created for ET will have coordinates that no longer make sense.

This game was designed for the Northern Africa and Western Europe conflicts. If your map doesn’t exist within this geography, then you’ll just have to get over this minor limitation. I don’t see Gerbil screaming for a middle earth map. :disgust:

You should just put the map in your ‘picture’ image, that appears in the top-left while the map’s loading, and put the map marker in a corner somewhere.

Seriously though when a new map comes out the marker’s position on the map is the last thing to bother me :rolleyes:

Actually they didn’t. They put bombs on baloons and tried to float them across the pacific, but not one of the exploded in the united states. They did find a few floating in the ocean right off the coast though.

True but I´ve already worked out how I´m going to get around this limitation :slight_smile:
Actually, more annoying than the map not being able to be changed is the shitty deal with the loading pic automatically being alpha´ed by ET. That was a dumb thing to do, and annoys me massively. I hate it when someone slaps a limitation on a simple graphic that is supposedly free to be anything at all.

Actually though I was thinking about this the other day - maybe we could start a petition and get the main mod makers to include the option of changing the map.
What it could do is look in the pk3 file for some like <mapname>_map.shader and in it would be a shader that if found is used to replace the loading map.
Obviously vanilla flavours of ET would not do this check so there would never be a conflict, the new world map would simply be ignored.
While this means it wouldn´t work on some servers, ones running alternative mods would work, which would be better than nothing, especially if the main mods out there all supported the same shader name convention.

Also, if / when a new ET comes out, they too could implement this functionality identically, so as people update, the world maps all start working :slight_smile:

I´m not really up on the mod scene right now, but I´m sure the guys behind ETPro etc wouldn´t find this hard to implement.

What say you?

That’s a really good idea. If I catch Bani on IRC tonight, I’ll ask him.

Also, the same for specialized shaders for ETPro compass icons. You have to include a seperate pk3… a better way (imo) to implement ET pro features is just have custom mappers make an “etpro” folder in their pk3s, that etpro searches for all the custom elements… shaders for the compass, new map graphics, etc. I wouldn’t think it would be terribly difficult to add this in. That way, there wouldn’t be conflicts with the pre-existing shaders / graphics.

While we’re at it, how about an option to support
some custom map chats… e.g.:

sound/chat/mapname/allies and sound/chat/mapname/axis
or
sound/mapname/chat/allies and sound/mapname/chat/axis

SiliconSlick (who replaced all the Axis cheers with Urak cries on ND80 Four Horsemen but knows that his changes would break
any other map that runs on the same server [and will probably mess with clients that join unpure servers])
