Can they get away with charging for other DLC?

(Mustkunstn1k) #1

So the first DLC is free, but my question is - can they really start charing for other DLC? As far as I understand then the first DLC is free because it’s supposed to be like the apology for Brink’s poor state at release.

There is no doubt in my mind that Brink is lacking content. Even though the content it has is awesome then then most games also have a separate singleplayer - Brink’s is the same.

And of course there is the question of what the DLC will have in it. The first one has abilities and weapon attachments. No way can later updates have things like these which you need to pay for. Same goes level cap which is moved on.

The whole level cap etc reminds me too much of Fallout, I wonder if Bethesda does what they are doing since this is the first time they publish a multiplayer game like this.

Only if it’s valuable content for a game that already works as it should.
In other words: maybe in half a year time?

(Metal-Geo) #3

I’m okay with them charging for extra abilities and weapon attachments and clothings. But I hope to God neither Bethesda nor Splash Damage are bat**** retarded enough to charge money for the maps. The last thing BRINK needs now is a split community of people being unable to play against/with each other.

(Jess Alon) #4

Mmm. Battlefield Vietnam. I couldn’t find any of my regular buddies to play with when that one came out.

(Mustkunstn1k) #5

Shouldn’t it be the other way around. Yeah, people get to play with each other if it’s that way, but then it comes pay to win. If you can only get specific abilities or even weapon attachments when paying money…

(Metal-Geo) #6

Only if they make the new abilities and weapon attachments more powerful than the current catelog. I mean it’s already possible to have a team of engineers with a lvl 1 turret vs a team of engineers with a lvl 3 turret.

Paying for the new abilities and weapon attachments should only expand the catelogs. Not improve it.

With that said, of course I’d very much prefer the free way as well. VALVe managed to update Team Fortress 2 with new maps, weapons, monologues, textures and game modes for three years, absolutely free.

I dont want them to charge for abilities, as he said they should also be free like maps. To be honest id rather have maps charged than abilities.

Updates are the reason why TF2 is so popular, without them it would probably been forgotten already.

Extras would probably be the best paid content for Brink, like outfits, weapon skins and weapon remodels (Hockler).

(thrill11) #8

No, I don’t think they should charge at all. They OWE US! We paid more than what the game was worth in the first place! MATTER OF FACT, they should GIVE us the DLC AND give everyone AT LEAST $30 BACK!!

(Breo) #9

If this DLC wasn’t free it means that players who bought it, will unbalance the game even more. (lvl24, new abilites/weapon attachments)

DLC’s shouldn’t give a advantage over players who don’t have it.

(Hurlbag) #10

This, except for the last part. The game is great but it feels very stripped to the bare minimum in terms of content.

(Petrolbomb_Tom) #11

Simple answer, no.

(Brink Lags) #12

I paid $60 for a $15 game. So, the way I see it, I paid for a lifetime of Brink DLC. I got royally screwed by this game at full price. I know it, SD knows it, and Bethesda knows it. I won’t spend another penny on this game. They are living a dream world if they want to charge for DLC. You can’t launch a product in the state it was and have the balls to charge more money for DLC.

If the launch wasn’t a total flop and I still had friends who owned the game, maybe charging for DLC would’ve worked. But, that is not the case.

I hope they charge a ton of money for DLC just to see the reaction. I’d never buy it anyway, so it would be somewhat entertaining to read the fallout.

I’ll never spend another penny for a product made by SD. Who would?

According to the Press Release future DLCs could potentially contain the following new content:

Maps
Abilities
Weapon attachments (new weapons aren’t specified but we can probably expect some in future DLCs)
Outfits

Of these, I only see new Abilities combined with raising the level cap to be a game balancing problem. It means the higher level players will be able to fill out more abilities in a secondary class making them much more effective against multiple types of objective.

The other potential problem I see is, what happens when I try to join a server running the DLC maps and I don’t have the DLC. It’s hard enough to find a good server as it is without that added frustration.

I’m also concerned about the direction SP is taking. ET was free (originally it was supposed to be an expansion but they never got around to the single player aspect), then ET:QW cost a standard amount for a PC game and delivered a nearly flawless product that still has a huge player base after 4 (5?) years.

Now Brink… yeah.

If they start charging for DLCs I’ll just do what I did with Fallout 3, wait for the Game of the Year edition to go on sale and buy all the DLCs for less than I payed for the original game. I’m patient, I can wait.

Maybe. I agree with the general consensus that map and equipment based DLC is a bad idea but, I think it would be acceptable for them to release character cosmetics and single player updates (Yeah, yeah I know, Brink isn’t exactly SP based. That doesn’t mean that it wouldn’t be a neat extra feature.) at a cost.

Unfortunately I am not so patient. If they start adding DLC abilities and level cap raises, honestly I would probably just stop playing for a large expanse of time. No game is really worth a lot of frustration, frustrating games are kinda counter productive.

(wolfnemesis75) #15

Sure. Supply and demand will be at work. Those who want it will buy it if it costs money. And those that don’t won’t. And also I’d expect some DLC to cost money eventually. This game is setup well for regular additions and content to be made available. New outfits. New level cap. Etc. New Maps. So far I am excited to see what is coming down the pike. I only buy a couple games a year and so am looking forward to fresh content for Brink. The other game I am getting this year is Gears of War 3. All other games I don’t have to have as soon as they come out especially when they are non-multiplayer games, like Skyrim. I can get that later down the road. So, for me I will be getting Brink DLC even if it costs money. I know there are some who are not willing, but everyone has their own taste in games and entertainment. For me, Brink is very fun and well worth the money.

(Serotonergic) #16

Fanboys will buy it.

People with taste will be playing games that don’t suck instead.

Well run along and do just that fella?

Of course they can charge, after all its a business they are running. Activision have been ripping millions off with a few maps at a over high price point for ages.

(ComboDavid) #18

I don’t think they should charge for DLC. They already released about $20 worth of content for $50. They owe the player base content.

(Stormchild) #19

I can be cool but if they start making DLC with powerful abilities, meaning the people who pay have an edge, then I’ll be very quick to run away from the game.

This is not a damn F2P cheap mmo. I want equal access to abilities for all, so combats can be fair and square.

(FoFifth) #20

I agree with the people who are saying that you shouldn’t have to pay to win. Thats like changing this game into a micro transaction FPS lol.

However, I agree with the people who are saying that if you charge for maps the community is going to get split up. I already have a hard enough time finding people to play with and I’ve come to the realization that its because of the rank splits. I’m at 20 and can’t find a game and when I log onto a lower level character I can find a game with (very) few people.
