can I run it?
Hehe certainly not. That’s more Dos 6.22 and Win 3.1

Ah the good ol’ days of QBasic and Nibbles/Gorillas lol.
You could run a nice Renegade BBS on that rig.

Get a couple phone lines and we’ll have two simultaneous players in Tradewars or Barren Realms Elite in no time.

(LyndonL) #82

Ooh, and I could download Wolf3D Episode 1 Shareware off of you!

(LyndonL) #84

LoL thanks for that. I already have all 6 episodes

Stop whatever you are doing and go buy yourself an i5 2500K, for what you get from it, it’s practically a steal.

I bought one yesterday with a new motherboard and new DDR3 memory for 384E. Got home and overclocked it with ease using the motherboard tools.

So:

Intel i5 2500K 3.3 GHz ovecloked at 4.3 GHz (stock cooler 60 degrees C on full load)
Gigabyte GTX 560 Ti factory overclocked
4 GB DDR3 Kingston HyperX 1600 Mhz CL9
Asus P8P67LE
Windows 7 64
Corsair 650W PSU

Bad Company 2, high settings, 8xMSAA, 16xAnisotropic, 1650x1050. Runs at an average 70 fps, was doing steady 60fps while recording with fraps (full resolution)

Here’s a proper review if you think I’m talking out of my ass

(Seyu) #87

Do you think that the i5 2500k may turn out to be overpriced because of its integrated video card?

(jfunk) #88

That’s nice on stock cooling.

(system) #89

Show me another CPU that comes close to what 2500k can do at that price.

(Seyu) #90

The Phenom II 975 comes to mind. I’ll do some research and let you know.

(Herandar) #91

So I just plug that into the USB port on my laptop?

(system) #92

Phenom II 975 is quite there with i5 2500k at stock speed for a bit lower price. I’ll make some tests with the i5 at stock speed tonight to see how much of a difference it is from it’s turbo mode (3.7) to (4.3). Don’t know how well does the Phenom overclock.

I’ve got a question, I’m not too worried about running Brink just fine but since people are talking upgrades in here I thought I would ask.

I have an EVGA GTX 285 1GB and my rez is x1050. Should I go ahead and grab a second one on the cheap or should I save up for an upgrade to a 5 or 6 series later this year?

(LyndonL) #94

IMO a single more powerful later gen card is ALWAYS better than an older gen SLI. But it depends on $$$ for you.

(jfunk) #95

Agreed. If money is a factor, SLI/Crossfire is almost never worth it IMO. It’s more for just trying to push performance has a hobby.

If you’re just looking to always be able to play the latest games with good (40+ FPS) performance for as little money as possible, it seems like the best move is generally to always buy the current or 1/2 gen old second tier card in the $150-$250 range.

Which card is the best bang for the buck in there changes from generation to generation, but somewhere in there is always the card that will last you 2-ish years with good (not OMG LOOK AT MY 3DMARKZ!!!) performance.

So you can spend $200 on one of those cards now, then spend $200 on the next “version” of that card two years from now and have better performance than if you spent $400 on two of the current ones now.

Also keep in mind that sticking with single card solutions also saves you money on your power supply and cooling too.

As I’ve said before, unless you have a powerfull CPU, don’t bother. A second card will only help run at higher resolution, better AA but it will not increase you framerate much. But hey, people still think that 2.4 minimum is just number and the GPU counts more.

(DIE_75) #97

My CPU is an i7 920 OC’d @ 3.5. PSU is a 1000W Silvertone OP1000-E. Heat hasn’t been a problem with a Cooler Master HAF932 so I’m ok there…

I have yet to run into a game that I can’t play on high but I know that will not always be the case. I can grab a second GTX 285 for around 150-200 USD or save up to get a 570 or 580.

(system) #98

A GTX 285 at this price is ridiculous, first the price is way to high and second the features are old + you’ve to deal with the typical SLI problems.

I just recently fitted a Gigabyte 570OC Windforce and it’s freaking awesome. Playing BC2 and CODBO on max settings and coming out of the game and the GPU temp is about 40 degrees.

Highly recommend it

I absolutely love the GTX 570 (had the chance to test the Phantom of a friend), but it’s not in my price range. :frowning:
