To revive someone effectively you have to know what it’s like to die. Which means dying a lot. Or am I wrong?
Calling all medics...
You’re wrong.
this isn’t ER it’s ET! You don’t have to die to know how to point a needle and click the mouse.
Theres no penalty for dieing in this game, and often taking chances pays off. I actually dont like the new compass in that I find it less accurate than RCTWs for pointing to the person needing medic/ammo etc.
Has anyone else had problems using the compass to spot the wounded? or do you guys just look around for them … I include direction and distance, if someone is above you or below, just doesnt seem to indicate it well.
I’ve often had problems finding wounded when they’re above or below me. Particularly, on fueldump on axis, by the stationary MG by the depot door. There are 3 levels there, and people use them all, and it can be difficult to get from one to the other quickly. Some indication on the compass of altitude would be nice. I’m not sure how that could work, though.
I liked that mini compass in vanilla Wolf a lot more when playing a medic.
It’s a lot easier to look at the compass for patients at the bottom of the screen, then to look at the right of the screen. maybe Splash can add a mini compass at the bottom of the screen, along witht he big one on the right.
About the compass: yes, I have trouble with it too. Not so much in its positioning, but it doesn’t seem as clear as the old Wolf one. I’ve heard people saying “why couldn’t the dmbss medic see me, he was right on top of me”: I have been that dmbss medic, the compass says that there’s someone waiting revival right by me, can’t find him, then I look down and he’s right at my feet… (d’oh!)
I’ve always wanted a 3D compass (but have no idea how it could be implemented without cluttering the interface even more).
I do wish that the compass map would rotate to face the way I’m heading. Perhaps there’s a very good reason why it doesn’t work this way.
But, in an effort to get this thread back on topic, perhaps I should rephrase my original question (which perhaps was too short and cryptic).
It seems to me that there’s something very different about being revived in ET compared with original RtCW. In ET, there’s a discontinuity in the view immediately after the needle hits, a feature that isn’t present in Wolfie. The effect of this (on me at least) is that it takes longer to “get my bearings”, and in a firefight this can be fatal.
My point about “knowing how to die” is about trying to appraise the situation a fallen comrade is in, and determining whether it’s worthwhile reviving him at all.
I guess what I’m trying to ask is: what’s the point of having medics at all if the guys they revive are killed almost immediately after being revived? Oh, sure, medics can get lots of XP by sticking the needle in, but are they actually doing the team any good?
/me hopes the final answer is “yes, medics are good”, because he likes playing a medic
even if there are 3 bad guys around who will kill your patient immediately again it’s stil a worthwile job because a) you gain XP and b) the enemy has to waste bullets and time (and probably take a few hits themself) to kill an already dead player again (sounds like a bad Zombie B-Movie
)
So yes, revive whatever half-dead you can find
of course you have to revive you can’t always tell if the guy will make it but there’s a chance, that’s the reason as well why i always try to revive people even when they are lying in the middle of an airstrike or anything else because then it’s sure that they will live at least for a while and the medic at least has a chance to live while otherwise one of them would be gibbed for sure, frustrating thing is that there are not many of us kamikaze-medics in ET (yet)
by the way with the XP system i am very hard to kill as a medic anyway so if my kill-death ratio goes down from 3:1 to 2:1 that’s no big loss… in fact i think with the stationary ammo-thingies in the maps the medic is the most powerful character in ET (and even was always in rtcw with a decent lt) -> so: don’t fear the enemy nor get lazy, revive whenever possible!
Not so sure about “of course you always have to revive”: There are some very smart enemies who will set up an ambush on the fallen purely in order to kill the other side’s medic…
don’t see that often and even if so i am almost always fast enough to revive before they get me or stand the ambush, probably my “always-revive-style” comes from playing most time on one-life servers in rtcw, you never get such a good teamwork in unlimited lives… btw: there should be one life servers (with a good ping for me) for ET, didn’t find any yet!
Unfortunately, much as I would like to play Wolfie with limited lives, whenever I’ve tried it, it’s just a plain deathmatch (Last Man Standing type game). The objectives are either completely ignored, or, worse, anyone actually winning by completing the objective seems to be considered a “cheat”
ya that’s right might get difficult with ET maps then, their layout is for long fights with many deaths, batter for example would be almost impossible with one life… limited lives would be ok as well
after killing the same guy 3 times in a row… it starts to piss me off…
so, reviving is worth while…
cheer

The new compass SUCKS
that said, I revive pretty much everyone I can find. I always laugh at the guys who see a grenade or airstrike and so they don’t revive. Wha? People are invincible after you revive them, the explosion won’t hurt. If you hesitate you’ll both get blown up.
One of my favorite things in Wolf, is when I run to revive and get wasted. The other guy does his “The plan worked” dance…then the guy I revived blows his head off.
