Bye Bye Wolfenstein. I'm really gonna miss ya!

I’m afraid my tolerance level for these incessant server disconnects has finally reached its threshold. You cant imagine the relief I experienced as I finally uninstalled it ( though perhaps bittersweet…). What it boils down to is that I simply won’t stand to waste so much time playing a game which requires an investment of my time to build up skill levels, only to be disconnected for unknown reason 45 minutes later. I would estimate I’ve had 50 to 75 disconnects, most after playing for at least 30 minutes. You do the math… I play games to relieve stress, not create more of it.

Lets face it, the game is not quite ready for release. I honestly believe ET Test was more stable (but I’m willing to be wrong about that…) I have good faith that the problem will be addressed, but for the time being, I’ve gone AWOL.

Its my favorite game of ALL time, and I applaud Splash Damage for the work they did, but the level of frustration from these disconnects is simply more than I can take. Thank God they did not charge for the game in it’s current state, as I believe the fury at this point would have been monumental.

Again, thanks Splash Damage for your efforts, I’m really NOT pissed at you guys, just the situation. And HUGE thanks to all the community members for helping so much here on the forum.

And last, thanks for listening to me rant my head off, I feel MUCH better now.

I’ll see ya’ll in a month or two when (hopefully) this problem has been sorted out and the game is playable without interuption.

in the test, it seemed that every round i would be disconnected… now it hardly happens to me…

Let me clarify a bit, I’m not talking about when the game kicks you out to the server connect screen. The problem I am talking about is when your character freezes and you see the little blue and white connection icon flashing. Not sure if these are two different types of disconnect or the same. End result is still the same though. Game Over.

Yes, this is quite annoying. One thing I suggested is that the server saves your data in case you get disconnected, although fixing the server crashes are important too…

Solution: STOPWATCH!

but seriously (btw, i do enjoy games of stopwatch), i really get don’t disconnects that often. some servers are kidna unstable, but some servers I can play for hours without d/c’s. you try some diff servers to see if you keep getting the blue and white?

(senator) #6

Dude, the server patch is almost done, they are already beta-testing it on some selected servers and the server admins seem to be veeery pleased with the new stability of their server

Oh, and by the way I experience very seldom server crashes, I often play for houres on one server without a single crash. Maybe the server you are playing on are overloaded (to many players ?) Maybe try some smaller servers, they seem to last longer ( at least until the new patch is finally released!)

I can live with the disconnects, no big deal.

i’ve got like 2 or 3 total since the offical release

I’ve got quite a few in the last day on one server I’ve played on for about a week, its weird.
But with a 56k, you learn to get used to it. After about 1-2 min it goes back down from 999 to about 150-200 for me. If it doesn’t I leave and join another “secondary” server that I play on.

Senator - the matches I prefer are 20 - 30 players but I dont really have a favorite server. I pretty much play whatever is pinging below 50 in that range of players. I rarely pay attention to the names but I have had disconnects on a LOT of them. (FWIW - I usually ping at 45 -70 on a good server)

I’ve posted before, trying to understand what is at the root of the problem but there is not a lot of detailed discussion on this topic. Perhaps we can take this opportunity to explore some of the different aspects of the disconnect. As far as I can tell, there are 2 types of disconnect.

  1. You are disconnected, given the “sever disconnected for unkown reason” dialog box, then re-connect and notice that everyone else is also re-connecting, at 0 xp. I only experience this on occasion and I assume that this is the infamous server crash. I see this only on rare occaisons.

  2. In this case, you just see the flashing blue/white connection icon. You are still in the game but cannot move more than a few steps before the “rubberband effect” brings you back to the same spot. When you reconnect, everyone else is still there with their xp intact. I would call this a client disconnect, which seems to be the problem I am having most. I see this several times a day.

Have you ever noticed when you are in limbo and clicking through the other players on your team, that there is almost ALWAYS at least one player on your team with the flashing connection icon? It appears that these players are also having the same problem. If it werent for seeing so many other players with the flashing icon I would assume that my connection was unreliable. Yet I never have connection issues outside of this game. As far as I am concerned, my broadband connection is rock solid, and my PC is in the high end of performance.

In summary, I would speculate that this is not a blanket issue where ALL players get disconnected, but where several players are effected while the rest of the game goes on as usual.

If anyone can elaborate on this I would love to hear your comments.

I get Connection Interrupted all the time, but it doesn’t lock up. What I mean is it happens and then after a few seconds everything “snaps” back to normal, and I’m back where I was when I first got stuck. What confuses me is Wolf when I got a CI I would get a sound loop and freeze like you, but in ET it’s only a skip.

To be honest I think this is more of a lag/computer freezing problem than a disconnecting problem.

(kvilli) #11

There is a rumored client patch coming up… And a server patch… maybe those will fix something. I have never been disconnected without a reason, except when server-crashes.

(Coolhand) #12

I’m not sure about this, but… as I understand it PB can be configured server-side so that it requests a screenshot from each client on a regular basis (for later checking to see whether players are using configurations that could be classed as cheats, wallhacks and suchlike).

Might the extra bandwidth requirement for these explain these “Connection Interrupts”, given that (sometimes) if I just wait then after a time the connection settles down?

(|Robot|Bender) #13

I have never been disconnected from a ET game…ever!

So i have no idea wathcoo talking about… :eek2:

Hm, I had a lot more disconnects in the test than in the full version. In the test I’d only make it through an entire campaign about half the time. The other half I’d get disconnected after 15-30 minutes. Since the full version came out I rarely get disconnected unless I have serious hardware problems.
Then again I’m running linux and haven’t even touched the windows version so this might not apply

Irrelevent side note: when the full version first came out maps would take ten times as long to load and I’d get disconnected every 5 minutes. Turned out I had too much running on my power supply. I always figured power supply failure == no start, but it started up fine (with half the ram sometimes) and just ran horribly.

:skull:

Please remove that stupid bender picture, it s gay. HA HA HA HA
Bend over !

Its Punkbuster that sucks…

I 've played on some servers for hours with no problems, and on others where the game fouled up every 20min. I’m thinking some servers that brag about their processing power and connection speed skimped on quality ram, heh

(Englander) #18

The servers what i play dont have this problem, however i have visited some servers randomly and found they do disconnect.

(afi) #19

it happens so often i always lose all my xp
