Yeah, I guess so.
bug: Prone hitboxes are really fubar
The prone hitbox should be a little better in the server patch… the head that is.
i don’t see why they can’t just make the hitboxes the same as the model, or just make the shot hit the model, all models have roughly the same size, as i understand it the need for hitboxes is to make it fair (bonez vs tank jr is not fair) so with hitboxes you have the same area to hit on everybody, but what’s the point of this in et? most models ahve same size, it would just make things less complex…
its not that simple. the server has no info about the player model. thats why it uses a fixed box. the server doesnt even reliably know the players model animation state…
the head position for headshots is approximated from the players viewangle, but as you can see it is not very accurate.
combined with the fact that the q3 engine cant do rotatable hitboxes…
its something that still needs a lot of work :moo:
The server doesn’t know exactly what state you see the models in, but it does hit detection.
You don’t want client side hit detection, because that opens up all kinds of cheating, as well as some really nasty lag artifacts.
Making the server track the models exactly would require a lot of bandwidth, and make animations much less smooth. With lag, the hit detection would still almost certainly not match what you saw on your screen.
Hit detection against a complex model is also much more processor intensive than a simple bounding box.
Hitboxes are not about being fair, they are about making the code simpler. Like most things in these games, it is a compromise. There are other options, but they all have their pros and cons.
et really would be that much cooler with more realistic locational damage like we see in cs.
Bani i was wondering, how do you get the display to show the hitboxes? Quite interesting…
thanks…
/devmap mapname
/g_debugbullets 7
You may have to set g_gametype 2 or 3 to load a single map.
To adjust how long the boxes around use
/cg_railtrailtime
i seem to be a little late, and would love to see the hitboxes for the 1st post as the pictures are no longer up, can someone be kind enough to re-post them of send them to me via e-mail
ya was thinkin that myself also the new urban terror conversion says they are redoing the hitbox’s altogether…?
Urban terror uses a completely different hit detection system. I suspect they will contintue to do so, though they will probably have to update it to match their new models and account for the switch to .mdx (assuming they are using .mdx.)
