Brink Will be Playable at PAX!
@visor: they are indeed allowed to answer that and they’ve said health will be different for different body types.

@nail: one of the hands on previews from gc said the soldier class is the strongest.
Oo my then they need to do a good balance check…
The Soldier will be uber strong, more health and access to the bigger and deadlier weapons
But I have faith in Splashdamage that they will come up with something. In the other games made by then, nothing seamed to be overpowered.

(Nail) #102

He says you can buy a health buff, would be odd if it was class restricted

Heavy bodytype gets the biggest weapons, not soldier class. Weapons are body type restricted.

(BioSnark) #104

He’s talking about picking abilities in that paragraph so it may be some class perk or smth.

ps. oops, made new post :d

(Nail) #105

I think that’s what’s refered to by Command Post buff as opposed to medic buff

(tokamak) #106

Explaining all this starts to become a daily routine. Can’t the info just be put on the site? Just the stuff we already know so people don’t need to be repeatedly explained.

(BioSnark) #107

but we don’t know what we already know because information is repeated unsourced. it’s much more interesting this way.

(tokamak) #108

It’s not just rumours http://www.splashdamage.com/forums/showthread.php?t=18079

(BioSnark) #109

saying that statements are made unsourced more often than not. not that there isn’t a source.

(tokamak) #110

It’s because most members have seen the source already, tracking it back is an awful lot of work, especially the same question will likely to be asked tomorrow again.

(badman) #111

As a bit of background, we’ve actually had an full-time in-house testing team for well over a year - the recent listings were just additional vacancies.

I got to play Brink at PAX for a while on Sunday, in addition to playing it at Quakecon.

By the way, I just uploaded even MORE videos and pictures to the ftp I linked to in my earlier post, including more Brink video, so check it out.

Want to really thank Jolly and Rahdo, they spent a lot of time talking with me personally even though it was a huge event, they made me feel very welcome. They are very nice guys and very friendly and cool. Wish we could have spent more time chilling.

Let me set a few details straight.

The current self revive cooldown for medics is set to 1 minute. Rahdo personally assured me that by the time Brink ships it would definitely be increased, probably doubled. However, I still think there should be a major warning system for medics on the ground who aren’t gibbed, maybe flash their bodies? They are a huge danger on the battlefield.

The pull to objective seemed a lot shorter range to me than at Quakecon, maybe I was paying more attention. However, what disturbed me more was the “pull to teammate.” I could sit there and hold the action key while looking at a teammate and SMART would auto-engage and drag me along behind them automatically for a short distance. Rahdo told me that this will mainly be for console players and also people who use the “heavy class” because you get a speed-boost from auto-following people with the use button to try and action-on them. I disagree with this completely as it automates too much and actually rewards people for doing it.

Must say I HATED the controller but Rahdo and Jolly sympathized with me on that.

I can verify this: there will be USER-END dedicated servers. Why? Because I saw the server launcher and it looks exactly the same as ETQW. For the record, they are using the PC version to demo the game, even though there is an XBOX controller and they are hiding the PCs inside big wooden boxes (think corporate politics here). With user-end servers you will be able to set different stuff to tailor the game more to your liking. Also, there will be no “ranked” servers anymore which should help custom content once an SDK is eventually released. However, we must wait and see if an SDK kit is ever released or not and how long it takes. If it takes too long many modders and mappers may move on.

I talked to Rahdo and Jolly about the importance of community amenities. ETQW had one of the best server browsers, 100-limit friend lists, 100-limit clan lists (both with email functionality to message people while they were offline), 3 levels of high quality in-game VOIP, visual indicators in-game when someone talks and awesome fire-team support. I told them not to rely on steam to do any of this and that if they did it the way it was in QW it would be awesome. ETQW was, IMO, the height of gaming perfection. Can never thank SD enough for that game. And once again, thanks for being such great hosts at PAX, it was a pleasure to meet you guys. I understand entirely why this game is being made (it’s hard for publishers to ignore the mountain of money that Acti-fail made with MW2), but I would urge you guys to take your profits from brink and come back to the Quake and ET franchise for a QW2.

Nice one Feanor. So you’re feeling more confident this time around I see.

Sounds good to me. Medics who die all the time, might find that a bit tough.

A warning system? I dont quite follow.

I concur. Instead make switching to lighter weapon = speed boost a perk IMO.

Are you a troll or something ?
STEAM allows you to create & be part of many clan/group at the same time, you can have a lot more than 100 friends and 100 peps inside a single group.
There are a voice indicator for people using (the crappy) VOIP.

I mean, seriously, give a single argument to not use STEAM friendlist/grouplist …

(Exedore) #116

That explains why Rahdo called me at 4am Seattle time to ask what the value was. I’d already increased it.

I have 1 quality, Seriously ETQW has the best VOIP I have ever seen and the VOIP provided by Steam just does not compete with it on any level.

Actually I have 2, Keeping clan lists and player names independant of services such as Steam or GFWL is IMO a good idea. Nothing is more annoying when you find the perfect name or clan name only to find somebody else has it, thats bad enough in 1 game but with services like Steam and GFWL which support many games then the problem is multiplied.

Also the friendlist is another problem maybe this is just my preference but as far as I know Steam offers no way to remain invisable when playing online. I would rather not be bothered with people playing other games when I’m playing Brink for example. I would rather keep my friends in Brink seperate from friends in other games that way I can choose when to interact with either social group.

Set SteamFriends to Offline? Disable alerts?

(AnthonyDa) #119

Still, QW VOIP sux compared to ventrilol/mumble/TS3.

IIRC, you can set the group name of your choice. Just like your steam account name can be different from your STEAM nick.

This is a false problem as stated before. I guess you are the kind of guy staying as “away” or “busy” everytime you are using a software for chatting

Haha poor Exedore. Gotta love the dedication
