Brink Will be Playable at PAX!

Thanks for the impressions and vids, Feanor.

So, there IS gibbing? Or do you just mean, completely dead, as opposed to being dead soon. lol (both Princess Bride and Holy Grail scenes are flying through my head). - I would like it much if certain hits gibbed the player beyond revivability, but I trust SD’s vision and iteration experience to make the best game.

I have little alarm bells going off in my head - exploitable, exploitable - is what they ring. Great intentions, but SD has to be sure they test the heck out of it.
Must say I HATED the controller but Rahdo and Jolly sympathized with me on that.
:frowning: Hopefully, that is just because you never play with one and love your mouse and keyboard, and not because it is worse than other FPS controller controls.

Will comment on the vids after I have had a chance to watch them. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing your impressions, Feanor. I, too, am a bit concerned about this part:

While the underlying reason for this–making sure those with low runspeed can contribute efficiently on the battlefield–is sound, there are a lot of potential pitfalls using this mechanic.
On the top of my head I can see this being used to follow lights running just out of throw distance ahead of them. Breaking the lock when the distance is too great, making the speed-boost last at most for a couple of seconds and/or increasing the maximum throw distance significantly after a few seconds of chasing might be enough to avoid this.

I only hope is that we won’t have heavies locking on and following lights from spawn to get to the frontlines faster.

a) See the polls… very few people want to be heavies so not a large issue.
b) I can’t see the speed boost lasting for more than 0.5 to 1 second which won’t actually benefit you a great deal in the grand scheme of things.

You’re making the mistake of thinking that the users of this forum accurately depict the entire future playerbase of Brink. And the percentage of players opting for a heavy bodytype is irrelevant. What’s relevant is that the auto-lock on won’t have exploitable side effects like the one I outline in my previous post. Most likely the devs have already taken the appropriate measures to prevent this, but that’s no reason for me not to share feedback and request further information.

Adding to Voxie’s comment in reply to Lyndon: if heavies are slow and cumbersome, and can’t get over walls, they most likely won’t be as popular as the lighter classes. However, gamers go with whatever is the most effective and if a speed boost makes heavies capable of getting around the map just as quickly as the light class, then you can bet that even those in this forum who voted light will pick up heavy.

I am not saying that it will be that much of an advantage, or even exploitable at all - just that it is something that will have to be tested extensively because the potential for misuse is very high.

Adding to Voxie’s comment in reply to Lyndon: if heavies are slow and cumbersome, and can’t get over walls, they most likely won’t be as popular as the lighter classes.

You also have to consider that when the game is released, health/weapon bonus might be more appealing than speed and mobility. I understand that many players seem to like Lights over Heavies, but that could do a complete turn around after the game is released.

But a speed boost for how long? Do you honestly think that over the lifespan of your character (between deaths etc) you will have a light by your side at all times and slowing down to your speed to wait for you to keep boosting along behind? Won’t happen. Sure as hell won’t happen in pub.

An indefinate speed boost is ridiculous and why bother having differing speeds at all if that’s possible - I don’t think SD are that stupid!
I honestly don’t think the boost will be of any big concern.

When you all dash off to do whatever the heavy will get a small boost in the right direction which will help them get to their target 0.5 seconds quicker (POP figure plucked from my anus) - “Well whoopty-doo Basil!”

I understand what you are saying. Again, ultimately, the majority of gamers (in the XBL crowd) will choose whichever body/loadout gives them the biggest advantage over the enemy.

However, Brink is unique in offering free movement around the environment, and I think that even if the heavies were to get a slight advantage, people will still want to play the light class simply because it is so fun just navigating the environment (even though it may cost their team a win). I know I will. The three most appealing aspects of Brink for me are:

A. The art and the character customization.
B. The navigability of the environment (and I don’t mean SMART - though that will be handy -but rather just that for the light body type, there are “no barriers”).
C. the emphasis on, and promotion of, Team work through explicit systems of reward.

Because of B, I feel like I would be missing out on a huge part of the essence of Brink were I to play as a heavy.
