BRINK suggestions forum

What do you think CoD4 could have done better?

(bahdom) #142

Well, its not so much that they could’ve done it better but the fact that it was bound to a known and defined reality [our current weapons], in Brink however, you could almost say they’re on the brink [pun intended] of a new dark age. So i’d expect alot more makeshift customizations, more hi tech customizations [since they are in a post-utopian future] and more creative freedom in general.

I’ll post a more elaborate explanation later, once I put my ideas together =p
The voting system in Quake Wars has always been a bit problematic. I’m not really sure what caused it, maybe the default tresholds where really high and server admins overlooked it, or maybe the voting threshold was a percentage of the players instead of a percentage of the voters (so the non-voters would automatically vote against instead of being ignored).
I think they were a percentage of the players which makes sense. Otherwise the first vote would decide it as it would be 100% of the current votes. It’s the percentage needed for a pass that most likely was a problem.
What do you think CoD4 could have done better?
I think the main problem with CoD4 was that you had no real incentive to change the customization. It may be less the case with CoD4 (as the weapons are all basically more or less the same) but more in CoD5. Once you have unlocked a better weapon you will never choose the other one as it is so much weaker. I did like the perk abilities though. Depending on the weapon it can be an interesting choice between more damage, rate of fire and accuracy.

PS: Bioshock had a great artistic approach to customization with visible upgrades. A few examples:
pistol: normal, upgraded
shotgun: normal, upgraded
machine gun: normal, upgraded

In my opinion makeshift upgrades like that would fit the Resistance quite well wereas the Security may use more conventional manufactured ones.

That’s not really true, the system keeps a time window of about 30secs to 1 minute. So everyone who didn’t vote then should simply be ignored. Which is important as well because sometimes you simply don’t know the reasons for the vote well enough to make an informed choice and sometimes you don’t care enough about the vote.

There are occasions I’m glad the voting system doesn’t work as intended. Whenever people think it’s justified to kick someone for either getting all his kills with a knife (without using a disguise) or when someone gets 20 vehicle kills on Salvage :stroggbanana:

It may be worth a try to implement it the way you describe.

i think splashdamage should get/hire beta testers with the only purpose of xp whoring. that way they could find ways of better avoiding it. because most of this problems come from players who just don’t want to have fun playing games

(Exedore) #149

Not naming names, but we just might have some who qualify in the office already…:o

(radiator) #150

ahah  have you been able to balance the rewards well enough so it doesn’t become counter-productive to the teamplay? (or at least confident you will)

i hope it doesn’t get grindy, one thing I hate in games are chores

(gee666) #151

will the SMART button allow teabagging? baseball slide into a teabag? jump over a crate and onto a face?

I need help

(tokamak) #152

That has actually already been dealt with. It would be very awkward if you slide got stuck into an elaborate t-bag animation just because some dead body was lying in the way.

actually the rewards are to enhance teamplay. the actions that help out the team as a whole are the ones that pay well…

yeah, grind isn’t good. we’ve got a few neat ways to deal with that, but haven’t been annouced yet.

(tokamak) #154

Locki monitoring every match himself as a referee?

(radiator) #155

that’s silly. they’ll probably use the tapirs they breed like in Matrix.

(tokamak) #156

Now that’s ridiculous. They’re already used to power the dedicated servers!

(Nail) #157

I think it’s the Goat

(SockDog) #159

I don’t think it has been dealt with. You just assume that the SMART system and implementation of t-bagging into it would be shoddy. Simply requiring someone to stand still over the body, look at the head and press the SMART button would be enough to counter you’re issues.

It would also be doubly great if the act of t-bagging an incapped player actually gibbed them. What a way to go!

Childish? yes. But IMO these little touches are what define classic games. :stroggbanana:

(tokamak) #160

One suggestion that might take very little effort to implement:

A team surivival mode. All it takes is the same maps and giving all players just one live. It’s incredibly fun in other games and I would love to see it work with the Brink mechanics.
