Brink release and reaction – realistically

(Kinjal) #1

I pretty much soured, it will be the same as a portal 2 reaction on steam forums. Where will be a tons of happy threads, they all gona look same - game is awesome, SMART is insane, graphics are wonderful and etc. But there will be a threads about PC, and how does it ended like a console port (don’t get me wrong, it’s not gona be like COD fail, it will be a minor issues in best scenario). So let’s look at Portal 2 history –

Pre release:
Thread: Will Portal2 be another console port?

Answers:
“If anything, valve games are pc games ported to consoles, not the other way around.”

“So far, every single Valve shooter played flawlessly on PCs (although they were showcasted using a gamepad). So why the heck the worries?”

“It wasn’t being played on an Xbox 360 in the gameplay demos, it was on PC with an Xbox controller.”

“Valve probably use consoles to show of their games because it’s generaly easier and safer than using a PC.”

Release:
Thread: Was the PC the lead platform?

Why is it asking me not to turn my console off?

Answers:

Devs : “That really has no bearing on which platform is the “lead” platform, all of the platforms are important to us and it’s certainly not true that the game was built for consoles and then ported to PC. Like most of our past titles PC in fact tends to be the most used platform internally during much of development, though consoles get plenty of love too since we want to ensure quality across the board.”

PC player 1: “I still can’t forgive them. This is a bad sign. I thought valve was different than this but I guess even they will sell out to the mighty console dollar. Lost of respect for Valve tonight.”

PC player 2: “It’s total balls, not that message but that everything in the game REEKS of console-itis. From the weird, sluggish mouse movement, the clumsy jumping, the huge white PRESS HERE! messages on the screen, the unchangeable FOV that makes the game look like it’s viewed through a cheap fisheye lens, etc.”

PC player 3: “Portal 2 is another console port like L4D2. Such a Shame, Valve are the new “Console Market Heroes” now. Everyone is :heart::heart::heart:ing us… Crytek, Valve, Epic Games… Who’s next, Bethesda? Nobody cares about us anymore…”

Console player 1: “…who cares?”

Console player 2: “I mean seriously how eliteist can a group of people be? Because one line was missed it’s “consolized?” Really? Get over yourselves. The game is awesome.”

Console player 3: “Wow, people will cry about anything. Anyone with a clue knows this game isn’t a port, let alone a sloppy port. It was already explained to you how this TINY mistake happened, go cry about it into your pillows if it’s still such a big deal to you.”

What exactly is the purpose of this thread?

(A.i) #3

maybe to prepare ppl for the worst

(Diablo85) #4

I’m already expecting the worst after all the crap ports the PC has gotten the past year. :frowning:

(RadBrad31) #5

I’m starting to think that with registration to the forums, they should send a box of Kleenex to the people so they can cry alone, and not have to cry on these forums.

(hamstein) #6

I heard somewhere that Portal 2 got low gamer ratings on metacritic cause of the “turn your console off” thing for PC. I personally couldn’t care less even though I’m a PC gamer and find it pathetic that someone does care.

(Diablo85) #7

That was because some people felt screwed over by the reward of Valve’s potato ARG.

(Herandar) #8

Hahahahahahaha!

Didn’t know about the Portal 2 thing.

Gamers (all, not just PC) are such fickle crybabies.

(Whydmer) #9

The PC user ratings for Portal 2 were higher than the user ratings for both the PS3 and the 360.

(A.i) #10

because those things cannot happen (“press start” also…) when you develope for pc separately,
and is a usually a first sign of a port even if its a good one
and no1 expected that from valve

(0xT1) #11

I never even noticed that o_0
Didn’t feel it was ported either, granted, I wasn’t looking for it either

(Kinjal) #12

Yea and i heard its a great game. But…

“Its not a BAD port, but it IS a console game first, PC second, and that was obvious to me right away.
As said, it just FELT wrong. Movement is slightly swayed, portals auto-aim, physics has had to be stripped away (you cant pick up things off the floor and throw them around anymore. In fact, throwing has been done away with completely), and the puzzles are far too easy.”

(DarkangelUK) #13

Regardless of intention or actual facts, Portal 2 was a game that didn’t require independent development on every platform. I just finished the game it was bloody brilliant… port or not. Not every game NEEDS developed independently for each platform… some do, but not all.

(Shiv) #14

Also, sluggish controls = they probably have vsync on, its terrible on source games.
Switch that off… game runs much nicer (mouse lag !)

(LyndonL) #15

P2 didn’t feel ported in the slightest. The game feels exactly like L4D in movement. God people cry.

I never saw the “console” message either?

Why would ANY dev make 3 separate games? You share as much code as possible between all the releases. Never heard the phrase “Work smarter not harder” ? I bet you do in your day to day life, yet you expect a game dev not to?

You can pick up items. Just not heavy things (chairs etc). If you swing your mouse then let go of hold the item is thrown just like in the first Portal.
Portal autoaim? That was in the first one also. The portal snaps to the best surface exactly like the first.
The puzzles are no less difficult than the first one.

God there’s some paranoia around these parts.

(Linsolv) #17

Kinjal’s just on a crusade to prove that no game has ever been made for PC.

(Nail) #18

He hasn’t even played Portal 2, he’s quoting the worst he can find on Steam forums

he’s a troll, don’t feed him

(trigg3r) #19

pointless thread is pointless…

(Otto) #20

I was expecting a lot more from Portal 2 personally. The root of the game was good, But even at the highest possible settings I found the graphics old and tired, like polishing an old car, its a little shinier but it’s still an old car. I found the entire experience to be basically like that (tho the co-op was better, that can say that about just about any game if you can play it with a friend)

To relate this back to brink, After my portal 2 bubble was popped, I’m starting to lower my expectations. The graphics in some videos we’ve seen look great, but on the other hand I felt the player models when moving look very ridged kinda like a turret with legs. When looking closer at the in game graphics of newer videos they look quite a bit more primitive then the earlier videos; It makes me think that, even tho this isn’t suppose to be a console port, they are starting optimizing/capping the graphics for consoles. I like to use the container city videos as the best example of this, http://brinkthegame.com/media/videos/?id=2
when looking at it the shadows are numerous, the textures are lush and detailed. If you look at any of the latest videos, I will use this one for example http://brinkthegame.com/media/videos/?id=81 player shadows are gone completely, textures seem more bland then what they were.
Its like PC graphics vs Xbox.

Request: I would like to see a up to date pc game play video, not a bunch of video clips, but 3-5mins of constant game play, and in 1080p please.
