Brink Q&A

(Nail) #741
I have been thinking, will BRINK be optimised to make the best use of Quad Core CPUs? Or will there be no benefit of having more than 2 Cores?

I am asking this since not too many games seem to take advantage of Quad Core CPUs and I am at odds if I should get a Dual Core CPU or Quad Core CPU for my new PC.
I might also be asking this too soon but hey, worth mentioning :)
get the quad-core

(gee666) #742

oh and if you are doing a viral along the windows line

I’m gee and brink was my idea

ET:QW (running on same engine than BRINK, sort of) is using Quad.

(Joe999) #745

suggestion for the next dev blog: it’s said that the brink engine is a heavily modified id tech 4 engine. can you elaborate on that? tbh, whenever i mention the engine on which brink is based, everyone wants to throw up. if it’s really heavily modified, i suggest to give the engine a new name and use that one. even if it’s only “inhouse engine” or sth.

(Ryan) #746

idtech4 v2.0 or something?

or sdTech4 :stuck_out_tongue:
ET:QW (running on same engine than BRINK, sort of) is using Quad.
There’s a difference between using it and profiting from it.

I’m in a similar situation as Brandmon. I want to upgrade my hardware for Brink and co without spending too much money. That means keeping my 775 socket mainboard and going for Core2Duo or Quad as well.

Would be interesting to see some direct comparisons in game performance.

(Brandmon) #748

I am not sure if id software would allow that but IW has already done that with it’s engine. (In the end, the so called ‘IW Engine’ used since CoD2 can be called a heavily modified id tech 3 engine as the core of the engine is still there, that is why Call of Duty 4 shares the same console commands as Quake III Arena)

In the end I don’t care if it’s called a ‘heavily modified id tech 4’ or ‘Brink’ or better yet ‘Tapir I’, it’s the result that matters.

get the quad, the difference in price is negligible, geez, just skip one night in the pub, 2 if you need more RAM

A few questions regarding Operatives:

Use the objective wheel to select a mission to hunt down an enemy Operative, and the sneak is warned of your intentions with a curt “They’re on to you,” from his commander

OK does the mission pop up in the mission menu for the spy, the moment someone else is in disguise. Or once they have noticed them with the special ‘see disguised enemy’ ability?

Another question - if ‘Spy A’ opts to take one of these objectives to kill their enemy ‘Spy B’, but Spy B takes out Spy A instead… does Spy B get the mission XP Spy A was ‘trying’ to earn?

It would be amusing if this was the case.

Thanks

I was wondering that too.

(Ragoo) #752

In ET:QW if you were fragged you could respawn and then instead of seeing yourself lying on the ground you could spec other people. Is this no longer possible because you would prevent an enemy Operative from interrogating you?

^ Rahdo said in that Xbox interview, that the decision whether you should wait to be revived, or whether you tap out, is a strategic choice. I’m ‘guessing’ its a revive vs negating the enemy from radar opportunities.

And in ETQW most players gib [ in comp at least] to prevent the player from being revived. So again that decision on whether to gib the player or whether to leave them for your Opperatives comes into play.So it ends up being a strategic choice for the ‘fragger’ as well.

A massive guess on my part though

(tokamak) #754

I think there’s more to it than that. Any idiot can spot a medic or covert coming towards you and decide when to tap or not. There’s nothing strategic about it, rather trivial actually.

Besides there might be more going on with fallen players.

I think this was just about if you want to respawn when the respawn timer hits 0 or if you want to wait for a medic. At least these are the options you have in ET:QW.

(MILFandCookies) #756

Regardless of how easy it is to make the choice, its still a strategic choice.

(brbrbr) #757

strategy is everywehre for sharp[enough] humans.

(tokamak) #758

Yeah a trivial strategic choice… I’m sure there’s more to it than just ‘oh the covert is coming towards me with no friendly medic in sight. TAP’

Game runs really faster if you set the processus to use only 3 cores than 2. Everything above 3 cores is useless, there isn’t a single frame added to avg FPS, but if you set it lower (with 2 cores or less), then ETQW is really slower than previously stated.

Probably has already been asked - In some of the hi res pics, the gunfire differs from player to player.

Does that allow the players to determine what sort of upgrades the enemy has on their gun? Or is it simply the characteristic of that particular gun?

ps official response please kthx
