Brink PC: Is it worth it right now?

(Esthin) #1

So I pre-ordered Brink on Steam, and I still have a few days left to cancel it before EU release.

I know it’s buggy and theres… A lot… Of issues right now with the game, but I just want to know if it really is worth actually buying the game right now.

I’ve seen some live streams and it didn’t look THAT bad on PC, just the one map with the sound fails, and a couple laggy servers but that’s expected, some servers are just badly hosted.

It’s just the thing with PC is I can’t return it after getting my gameplay in like Xbox or PS3.

Any impressions, and an answer to this one question:

Should I keep my pre order, or cancel and wait until they fix it?

The only two glitches that I know of is the map glitch and some players turning invisible.

Besides that the game looks ace and you’d be foolish to pass up on the fun.

IMO if you like the kind of team play Brink brings to the plate then yes, absolutely worth it.

If you expect COD style, NO!

We have 4 PC dedicated servers up with no lag.

(sk1nk) #4

It’s absolutely worth it.

I had the sound cut out on 1 game out of 30 or so, but that’s a minor issue. None of the problems that plague the consoles.

(Esthin) #5

Yeah I know that consoles have it way worse.

My system should have no problems either, I know of the ATI cards failing but I have nVidia so we’re good there.

Check out metacritic to see reviews so far. Some really nasty stuff there and quite a few reviewers saying the game is not worth it. I usually don’t pay much attention to a single bad review, but when its kind of generalized… Also, hands-on players opinions are not much better either (lots of lag, dumb bots, texture problems).

Basically, I’ll sit on it for a few weeks. This was going to be a day-one buy for me - I’m glad they release on EU a few days latter or I’d very likely would have taken the plunge head first.

Iam having a BLAST… haven’t run into but 1 problem with lag+crash out of 7.3 hr of play. ATI 2x 6970 in crossfire.

short answer, yes.
long answer, yes.

i have an ATI card and i am getting 15-20 FPS. if u have ATI card than WAIT.

because of such horrible performances i barely go online cuz im getting slaughtered but perhaps this is due to online lag. i dont know.

as of right now i am not enjoying the game at all.

I think the game is amazing. The PC does have it’s own unique issues, but the SD devs seem to be active here on the forums which is a great sign and the have not locked the console/config so that makes the community able to fix alot of issues too.

(Esthin) #11

I said earlier I have nVidia.

System specs if anyone wants to know:
nVidia 560Ti
i5 2500k 3.3GHz (Quad core)
4GB RAM

AFAIK there will be no problems since others with systems same or similar to mine don’t get the lag problems.

I don’t listen to reviews either, but I’m just not sure about this mainly since a lot of the people are a little so-so about it too.
So far I think I’ll just stick with it.

Splash Damage are good with support they should flatten the issues out soon, and besides, first-day issues are in pretty much every game.

(RumRunner) #12

if you have an ati card it is kind of a coin-toss. i have an hd4870, and have absolutely no issues with lag even on the server browsing menu no fps drops or any problems… except the apparently universal problem with the hd4xxx series, of there being grids on everything…

but i can ignore that for the most part, and aside from that problem and slight difficulties hosting (probably need to forward the ports and such. still haven’t bothered to do that yet) the game is immensely fun to play, and even the refuel-map where everyone loses sound if it is on a dedicated server is still playable… it makes it a bit more interesting because you can’t hear people running around… but it is still playable and fun.

as far as all the bugs and such, they exist, but near as i can tell it isn’t any worse than most recent releases, and in some cases is still better than stated recent releases.

because it is SD’s first original ip and multiplatform it is just getting more attention towards the bugs than other equally buggy releases.

I have same exact specs as you, minus a SSD and 8GB of RAM, the game is maxed out and theres no FPS drops at all. I wish there would be more AA then there is atm, cuz sometimes its noticeable. But if you like SD’s games I dont see why youd want to cancel, its REALLY fun.

I also have a sound issue on one of the last maps, like everyone i guess.

(Esthin) #15

Ah, cheers.
I saw their first review denial and it kinda made me think it could be a little iffy, since it’s a small site not IGNorance

Thanks, I’ll keep my pre-order. You’ve persuaded me :stuck_out_tongue:

(GreasedScotsman) #16

We’ll have highlights from our broadcast last night when I get a spare minute that should probably convince anyone of Brink’s complete and total awesomeness.

(Reapter) #17

I wouldn’t get it until you see confirmation of fixes for fps issues or unless theres another way to try it just yet. Till then its gambling. Once those are sorted out its a great buy though but until then.

(ultraddtd) #18

I see no reason not to get the PC version. I kind of wish I did as well.

Also, Ars Technica will be my review destination from here on out. Not because they gave the PC version of Brink a thumbs up, but because they sound like they objectively and intelligently review things.

(Sheza) #19

The ATI card issue has been hot fixed.

(Esthin) #20

Yeah I read the release about updates coming up.
Nice to know.

Still keeping my pre-order now. ;D
