Brink PC Gets Steamworks, System Requirements

(kilL_888) #61

well, i just dont like the program and i dont go into detail here. its not that i wont buy brink just because steam is required. its just that it will sit in the background when i want to play the game, even though i dont like programs sitting in the back doing nothing but sitting there when i want to play a game. im just wondering if it is really required.

as stated several times, brink is a “games for windows” game. doesnt that mean you also have to install gfwl? so, is it “games for windows”, is it steam or is both optional and i can run my game the good old way, with an .exe file?

go ahead, flame me when im not up to date and didnt read ALL the news released the last year.

Isn’t there like a way to close Steam down while in the game? I think there was a way. Non-the-less, unless your PC is super old and you need every piece of RAM and CPU you need, then I don’t see why it even matters.

(Herandar) #63

I don’t want to have to choose a server either.

(Herandar) #64

Even I know this one! GFW and GFWL are very different things. This is not a GFWL game, so no, you won’t have to deal with that extra crap. It is a Steam game.

I hope that disabling shadows is still possible and SD hasn’t gone into CVAR lock down mode like other studios. I usually get a solid boost in frames and playability from that alone. I meet the recommended specs, but I assume that’s recommended for 60 fps and I personally think 90 fps is the bare minimum I want to see.

(Mustkunstn1k) #66

I realise you are joking, but I really hate when people say that. I mean even tho nowadays there is a play button that does it automatically (Brink probably also has one), but still - why wouldn’t you want to select. You can see things like players, current map, ping and all that good stuff. It’s great.

(SockDog) #67

If you only want to play games and have minimal choices while doing so then you have a point. IMO the complexities (which aren’t dramatic) of the PC are far outweighed by the capabilities and options it brings.

(Herandar) #68

Actually, I’m not. I like variety. (Basing this conversation on my XBL BFBC2 experience.) I don’t care who the players are. I usually play with friends nowadays, but I made most of my friends by joining random squads until I found players that were pleasant and engaging. I’ll join a friend’s game, if I can. If a friend logs in while I’m playing, I will invite that friend to join.

In the rare occasions where I end up on a server without any other players, I’ll quit and try again. I don’t care what the map is beforehand. I’ll play whatever map comes up and adapt to it.

My internet conection is pretty good. I’ve never known what my ping is, and lag has only really been a issue to me once or twice in the past year. I know for a fact that I’ve played with Europeans, Japanese and Aussies in that time. Oh, and I played against some Russian guy living in South Africa once. Overall the system has worked fine for me, so I don’t have to worry about it.

If there is no problem in joining randoms, the why would I desire having to look through server lists and pick one, and the deal with capricious admins? Save your hate for something worth it.

I prefer the choices to be in the game.

system requirements are very similar to crysis 2, so if your PC can handle crysis 2 you will more than likely be able to play brink

yes, steam will be required to play brink. which adds some great features imo, like being able to join servers your friends are playing at through your friends list, in-game chat, web browser… etc. It doesnt have to be sitting in the background, you can actually use it

and you’re confusing “Games for Windows” with “Games for windows live” which are 2 different things, so no you wont have to install GFWL (thank god)

I have never had to deal with admins. I mean even with the server browser you can just click sort by ping and take the first one. No hassle.

It’s even better when you just put up filters which you only need to do once.

I myself usually just go under favourited servers. You’d be suprised how every server has an awesome mini-community of players who always go to that servers. It’s awesome how you actually know 50% players.

(Mr.Fozzie) #71

For me, dedicated servers means stability and control.

I know if i join server [A] i will not be hassled by the admins for ‘cheating’, i will not have to worry about legitimate cheaters, and i know i’ll ping well consistently to it. Similarly server [A] might have a higher average player skill, which i would greatly prefer over one with a more random assortment of skill levels.

These are a few of the reasons why i stick to specific dedicated servers, over others.

Some people don’t care about that kind of stuff; i certainly do.

(tokamak) #72

Yes but here I present you with another advantage about console gaming while making a snide remark about the pc gamers in general.

(trigg3r) #73

that’s what i like about dedicated servers, i’ve been playing TF2 in the same 2-3 servers for a long while now, and it’s amazing how everyone knows each other. Same thing happened in UT3 before.
Knowing each other also helps prevent team stacking since we change sides to make teams more even.

(SockDog) #74

As I said, if you’re comfortable with where console gaming is that’s fine. I just feel you’re criticising PC gaming for the negatives without acknowledging the positives.

(badman) #75

Guys, this isn’t the thread for PC vs console debates. Please keep it on topic.

(Herandar) #76

I’m not really criticizing PC. The only criticisms were in my first respons to Mustkunstnik. I’m not criticizing having dedicated servers, I think they are fine, I just don’t prefer them, expecially because random servers has worked fine for me.

Really, where do you read that I am anti-PC? I’m not a hater. I would never play a Civ game on a console.

(Wolfmeister) #77

Good news and thank god for VAC support!
Crysis 2 MP is completely filled with cheaters atm ruining the experience.

the only thing what can good server admin do in this case is to use hack too. and spectate and ban and spectate and ban.

(General Wolfens) #79

Awesome!

Hope my old notebook will start the game ^^

(kilL_888) #80

i actually didnt know that. maybe its because i avoid all that g4wl, rockstar social club and steam stuff. glad it isnt gfwl.

steam isnt that bad i must add. there are just some minor things i dont like about the program itself. the steam network is fine. the downloadspeed is fine and for a gamer (im more a casual gamer than a “real gamer”) i guess the friendlist and all that stuff is fine, too.

i would like it better if i wouldnt have to start another application before i run my game, but i guess i just have to live with that.
