Brink PC Gets Steamworks, System Requirements

(SockDog) #21

Modified idTech4. You can hope that the kneecapping ETQW received was at least smoothed over while tinkering with the engine.

I think Badman just missed that in the writeup. Dedicated servers have been confirmed for a long time I doubt that would change. What hasn’t been revealed though is how those servers will be released.

Unless they use the source engine kind of server browser and work also with Steam outside of the game.

Guess on my part, but I would think steamworks would give the steam browser even if it’s hidden by a console command like in L4D.

The thing about mod support is that I really hope they put it in after launch. I mean I understand - they want to sell DLC and with mods it is very hard… I mean Bethesda games have incredible mod support but most of their games are singleplayer, multiplayer maps are a little harder imho. That isn’t to say that on PC the extras can’t be easily put in by the player without paying.

It’s a big topic. In short I don’t see how allowing people to create maps/mods undermines DLC unless the DLC is pointless or of low quality anyway. I think and hope the area they’d want to protect is the customisation. Selling DLC clothes and weapon skins etc with maps being free to envigorate and consolidate the playerbase.

Would I be able to run this?

Nvidia GT120
Intel Quad Core Q8300

I usually play on 1024x768 all my games. I just want to make sure I get a smooth FPS.

The thing about DLC is that I can’t imagine how they will be able to stop people just taking the DLC and making it into some sort of a mod for servers to apply… and then you wouldn’t have to pay for it. Although I myself would definitely buy it, unlessi it’s price is insane like last CoD games.

But since they would still be selling the DLC on the consoles they would still make money. The end result would be similiar to L4D or CoD4. CoD: WaW just got a sponsor for the PC maps.

PC games need community support to stay alive.

But yeah, that’s probably a different topic.

They just announced the min sys specs, can’t you read?

(Rong) #25

Yes, I saw them. There’s no need to be rude. I’m simply asking for confirmation.

(xTriXxy) #26

well… i think Nvidia GT120 is not a gaming card… is it onboard gpu?

(xTriXxy) #27

do we know the providers ? or everyone who was ETQW server provider will provide Brink servers too?

(Rong) #28

It’s a dedicated card that has served me well. Mafia 2, Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age 2…

Sad day for the year of linux

(SockDog) #30

Well there is a fine line between modding and all out stealing. I’m also sure that they can pick what aspects of the game are open for modding via the SDK so they could give the map/game tools but nothing to alter models or customisation.

(Fireseed) #31

Whats about mobility graphic cards? Have anybody additional infos about notebook support? (look at badman)

(Diablo85) #32

Quite demanding specs for a game that graphicly wise isn’t the best looking and that runs on an older (though modified specs). I barely meet the minimum requirements. But seeing as I could run Crysis 2 fine I would expect BRINK to run fine too.

(light_sh4v0r) #33

Dedicated servers have always been a given, I’d rather like to know about serverproviders and serverfiles for us consumers. Scrupus has to run a Brink Nirvana!

(Diablo85) #34

Dedicated servers in which form? One server provider only, a few partners where you can rent from or dedicated server files (for windows and linux)?

(DSVirus) #35

Yuck, hate Steam. VAC is borderline useless. At least PunkBuster sometimes works. It still looks like a great game, so I’m still buying it.

(Mustkunstn1k) #36

Meh. I’ve yet to encounter a hacker in TF2 after my 500 hours of play. In CoD games or ET tho… hah… the only hope is to play on a server where there are good admins.

Not to mention how many times PB has stopped me from playing the games for some random reason.

(Mr.Fozzie) #37

Any word on whether the steam released copy of this game will be available for pre-load a day prior to release? One of the major drawbacks to PURCHASING games over steam (especially those of us with less than stellar internet connections), is having to wait 32987234987324 hours for the game to download/install right on release day.

Does SD/Bethesda have any control over this being allowed, or is that strictly a steam-side decision?

I’m hoping for a response from SD on this: This often determines whether i purchase via steam or not, as it will literally take me an entire day (or more) to download a game of this magnitude on my paltry internet connection, especially if their servers are being bombarded with thousands of other brink fans, doing the same.

I wonder – if upping the ram on this rig would help much (wrt BRINK). Anyone know?

AMD Phenom 9500 X4
2 GB Ram
Nvidia GTX 480

Thanks,
Deems

definitely more ram. Does your motherboard support triple channel?

(Maawdawg) #40

AMD boards are all dual channel as far as I know.

He should have another 2 RAM slots available unless it is a micro ATX board. You should probably get another pair of 1GB sticks (or better yet a pair of 2GB sticks which is still under $50 in many cases) and add them in to your open slots. You would have to swap out the 4GB pair for your current 2GB if you only have room for two RAM DIMMs on the motherboard.

4GB overall is solid for pretty much any game you may want to play at this point.
