BRINK PC/console port

(Crytiqal) #1

Could one of the developers confirm yes or no, if this game is developed SEPERATLY on each platform, without porting?

Because I heard this everywhere from everyone, but my friend doesn’t believe me.

So finitive answer from the devs please, quotes are good too.

Thanks!

You don’t expect them to tell you that it’s a console port if it’s really the case, do you?

(Trivve) #3

BRINK is not a console port. It’s being developed for all three platforms simultaneously.

The PC is really strong,” he said. “But you have to develop specifically for the PC, because back-porting from consoles just doesn’t work… You miss vital elements."

BRINK is being developed as a fully cross-platform game. We try to share as much code and as many assets as possible between the platforms. During work on our previous games we already had a solid understanding of doing cross-OS development and this experience partially translated over to working with multiple hardware platforms in writing portable code.

For example, we have developed a job system for BRINK, which can be used to offload code to the SPEs of the PS3 or to the various hardware threads available on the PC or Xbox 360. We also know what the strengths of each of the platforms are and we make sure that all of them receive the attention they need in order to fully utilise them. We don’t want any of them to feel like they are ‘just a port’.

There’s no lead platform. I’m sure you’ve played a game and you’ve thought ‘you know, this is not the machine this game was designed for.’ We give equal love to all three of them; same engine, same assets. […]

they always have multiple teams coding the different versions of the game,

do you know how long it would take to do all 3 at once with 1 team

(A.i) #5

Thats what crytek said or something

(Smooth) #6

I’d guess it would take about 3 years, give or take a few months

(Nail) #7

would more cakes help ?

I love this thread. There are many games out there that generally favor the Xbox 360, and so the PS3 is left with several features forgotten about. I’m really glad this won’t be the case for “Brink”.
This game just gets better and better! I’d like to say to Splash Damage that “you have awesome ideas”, but, I’m sure they already know that.

Ohhhh snappity snappity snapsnap! … SNAP.

(beute) #10

no, crytek said they would make a real multiplatform title… wich they did.
they developed a engine that works across all three platforms without the need of porting that much things.

just like unreal engine3 and the upcoming id tech5.
they’re designed from the ground up to work on all 3 platforms.

id tech4 was not designed to work on all platforms, it was a PC engine.

(DarkangelUK) #11

Gotta agree here, not that I have my doubts, but they wouldn’t say if it was regardless.

(Linsolv) #12

Yeah… every time I hear people arguing that they claimed it was developed independently for all 3 platforms it brings back memories of Black Ops, which as a PS3 user and a person with ears I can tell you was only really good on 360.

EDIT: 'Course, I do trust SD to make a PC game, and the way I understand it if you’re going to screw up a console, it’s going to be the PS3 because while more powerful, it’s also more annoying to program for. So the fact that they seem to have shown mostly PS3 footage, and some PC footage with a 360 controller, I’m not worried for XBL users.

We just have to wait - 26 days, and 11 hours, or other words 3 weeks and 5 days.

(Crytiqal) #14

That’s about the development time for BRINK is it not?

So you are saying that 1 team coded for all 3 platforms

Thanks for your post Trivve, but still it can be read both ways. But they do say they are putting much effort in to conceal the fact it is a port? Or do they say it’s not a port?

@Linsolv Exactly, people argue that it’s being developed independantly for all 3 platforms. Now I am trying to found out if this just started as a rumour, or find real evidence of a dev saying this.

(PapaBearFSM) #15

Thats a reason why SPLASH DAMAGE is one of the best STUDIOS ! They dont port the games… they took the time and do a great work ! ! !

(Crytiqal) #16

Thats what I am trying to find out, got any proof where the devs say this?

(Kinjal) #17

Here u go - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFFvaeTt6bg&cc=1 1:55

But its just a words, no screenshots of PC version, or any other proof.

(jRAD) #18

We developed all three platforms in-house.

(LyndonL) #19

jRAD. Have you got any proof or quotes to substantiate this?

No offense here, I understand that all PR and commercial stuff come from Bethesda, and all decisions about give or not give info come from them too. But how can u tell us about “all three platforms” if u not shown us any PC stuff, I mean I have absolutely no weapon against any1 who says “it’s a console port”, what do u think I must say to them? “U must believe in SD!” or I don’t know “They are PC developer!”, if u have such a good not ported PC version, why didn’t u showed it even once? Why u been on tons of Expos, and we never seen a guy playing on KB/M? Where is a screenshots of PC version? Why PC magazine making its preview based on console version? It’s so hard to make 1 video showing guy, sitting and playing on PC? I don’t get it at all, DICE shout as loud as they can about BF3 PC stuff, it’s the main point of BF3 PR campaign, and here we have a Brink with words like “all three platforms” “PC is not the Port” but no one, have seen a PC version. I see only 2 reasons of this – u afraid to frighten away console players or PC version is a console port.
