Brink Objective Wheel vs ETQW Objective Menu/List

(McAfee) #1

After much playing, the objective wheel is really not “Working out” for me, not like the objective menu/list of ETQW.

I think it’s the fact that it is not static. By comparison, Voice commands on a wheel are usually in the same place, picking weapons on a wheel (or dpad), they are usually in the same place too. You can do by memory that XY direction is always the same result.

But the objective wheel has me reading the whole thing and then picking a choice, in a process long enough to get me killed. The only time when I can use it without wasting time is if I get gibbed long before the respawn

The ETQW method still allowed me to tap my way to the correct objective, dedicating minimal brain cycles. I can progressively pick the right objective, while I walk “10 clicks”. I can be interrupted by an enemy, and it’s quicker to switch task from tapping, to fighting back. Because tapping doesn’t take full control over my movement, unlike the wheel does. And the menu doesn’t clutter my visibility.

I cant progressively pick an objective on the Brink wheel. I have to “stop” what I’m doing and dedicate all my brain power to finish the selection process. If the process is interrupted, I could have randomly picked any objective, and would have to start over from zero again.

Why not change to the automatically choose me a mission option? By now i can remember all of the objectives anyway.

(legend123) #3

is ETQW objective selection like W:ET?

(McAfee) #4

I’ve been using automatic mode as a work-around.
And also I’ve been using it in context by looking at the objective directly in front of me and tapping the wheel button.

But both those methods are mostly directly setting an objective without actually interacting with the wheel itself.

As a last resort I use it when I’m totally lost, and when I’m gibbed and have time to. But then the automatic mode tends to change my choice.

(McAfee) #5

No. If I recall correctly W:ET didn’t have a pre-selection of the objective you wanted to do. The announcer just told you what to do, period.

Further Testing reveals the following on the Brink Wheel. This is on Security Tower, local server, alone. At the start of the round for Security, both Medic and Engy get a wheel with 3 options. These are their locations:

Medic:

  • Top: Revive
  • Bottom Left: Defend… (primary)
  • Bottom Right: Find nearest CP (bottom right)

Engy:

  • Top: Defend… (primary)
  • Bottom Left: Find nearest CP
  • Bottom Right: Construct MG

Not even the primary objective is in the same place. And the same secondary objective is in a different place too. Making it impossible to make choices out of memory. Things get more complex when the wheel presents around 7 options (Try operative with a lot of abilities)

The wheel is a console feature, like so many things in Brink.

(fearlessfox) #7

I’m going to learn Brink on my console and ‘upgrade’ to PC in a couple of months when I buy my new gaming rig, so I’ll be used to these features when I do.

However, had I come straight from my PC instead of a few months of forced console play (I bought a ps3 so I could game as the next PC I want is £1200 and I need to save for it and my current set up just isn’t cutting it) I might have found this cumbersome.

I’m not a dev, I’ve no experience with that at all, but do any of you know how difficult it would have been for SD to add PC only features to that version?

IE: separate the run/Smart buttons, allow key bindings for all F button actions, add a menu instead of a wheel, and so on…?

I’m just waiting for the moment I can step into a map with my keyboard and mouse and precise controls.

(Metal-Geo) #8

BRINK menu thing is what I prefer. Much quicker and easier to access.

That’s not to say the ET:QW system was horrible, though.

(Overgear) #9

The smart/sprint button can become a toggle, if the toggle is off it forces you to manually smart.

I’m ok with the wheel most of the time it 80% of the time goes “You can no longer complete…” and so you have to pick the objective again. It’s really irritating.

(Happymonster) #10

burn the wheel! i say

Burn it!!!

ETQW 16 : Brink 1

Wow, SD clearly made something wrong here. I hope their next game will consider this.

(Stormchild) #12

depends on who’s voting. On what platform they play etc… because this is obviously only aimed at those of us who have played ETQW before Brink.

(McAfee) #13

ETQW was available on consoles too:

I’ve never played them there, but would be interesting to see how the objectives menu was implemented there.

(pelisilma) #14

i would rather have just a map which shows injured friendlies and objectives. maybe some kind of small icon and info text at the side of the screen too. i vote for enemy territory’s “i know what im doing here” and would like to have whole thing removed

(Senyin) #15

Me too.

I voted for ETQW’s Objective menu, but to be honest I can’t even remember what
it looks like because I used it once or twice then never again.
I do use Brinks objective wheel, just because sometimes I’m unsure where to
go or what to do due to several reasons. I use it as a guide. Once I learn the
maps (I am not playing atm) I won’t use the wheel anymore.
I don’t like using objective wheels/menus/lists, period.

(xTriXxy) #16

i like brink objective wheel. easy to use. simple.

(kamikazee) #17

There’s no option for a hybrid version as neither are an ideal layout.

An improved wheel could be better if it tried to keep certain types of items at a fixed location and if it allowed shortcuts.

(Mustkunstn1k) #18

As I mentioned in this thread then I would prefer ETQW. At least then I know what’s going on in the world, just not the main objective.

Trying to keep the comparison as objective as possible, using 2 existing wheels. Maybe even throwing in the respective console versions into the mix.

Of course there are many ways to improve both.

(The_Happy_Friar) #20

I know that up is always the main objective. Yellow = main objective, blue = secondary (I think), greyed out = non-important things (IE find nearest control panel).

I like ETQW’s system though because it lists all the objective (build, guard, etc) in the screen at once. If Brink did that I most likely wouldn’t mind the wheel at all.
