Brink needs Splitscreen

(Yeti94) #1

I thought that Quake Wars was a great game and can’t wait to play Brink. But I intend to buy Brink for my PS3 (I have Quake Wars for the PC) and for it to be good on the consuls it needs to have splitscreen. A lot of developers, especially for the PS3, seem to forget that people that buy video games actually have friends and that these people like to play video games with these friends. Sometimes it’s more fun to shoot your friend then random screaming six year olds. And even shooting the random screaming six year olds is nowhere near as fun to switch off the controller every life or two and then watching for the next two when playing with friends. And what if your consul is not hooked up to the internet? With splitscreen you could be playing coop with your friend instead of just shooting bots.

Four player splitscreen is better, but two player is fine if Splash Damage can’t do that. But if Splash Damage actually wants to get new players into the game they need splitscreen.

I definitely agree with you, some of my friends don’t even have Xbox live so Splitscreen is the only way they can play together.

In addition to 2x2 Split-Screen, I would Love to be able to LAN Brink on two consoles and be able to have 8 people play using two consoles. MW2 failed miserably, if you System link you can only play with one person on each console.

I think most publishers would like each gamer to buy the game instead of 1 game per 4 players

(tokamak) #4

I don’t think consoles can deal with that any more. Especially with the success of online consoles this is a redundant addition.

(Rahdo) #5

At this point, all I can say is that I love it and I hope it can make it in, BUT it is a very big technical challenge, so I can make no promises

It would be great though, if you have special ‘team’ assets like giving your mate foothold to climb on a container, or drag a wounded player from the crossfire etc.

(Nail) #7

if consoles can get split screen, can PC gamers at least get multi-monitor support

(tokamak) #8

Actually I swallow what I said. Split screen is awesome, I forgot how much fun I had on my gamecube with mario cart, pacman vs and metriod fusion.

(.Chris.) #9

Metroid fusion was on the GBA…

(tokamak) #10

Echoes. My bad.

Fusion was bloody amazing as well. Saved my entire winter holiday after I got a snowboard cleaved in my leg.

it’s got to happen if you want to expand your player base (and that seems to be a focus with Brink). As hard as splitscreen is to add it brings that much more play time and sales. Play time because playing with friends is a lot more fun and sales because people that don’t have their consul hooked up to the internet (a lot more people then you would think) will then have a reason to buy the game.

AS Rahdo already stated it’s hard to do and I think it would better come without split screen if it’s not working the way it should.

(Nail) #13

consoles (consuls are the official representatives of the government of one state in the territory of another) can already link through routers just like LAN with PCs, splitscreen may be cool, but not necessary imo.

But chances are that if your playing split screen, your buddy probabbly doesn’t have a console. Also it’s a major pain to have to drag your console every where with you so you can system link. While the feature may not be necessary, it’s a huge plus. I know countless people who bought Borderlands just because of the inclusion of split screen. Lets face it your not going to win any awards for having split screen but at the same time it could only help their sales. And with the delay and all there may be time to add it in

No splt screen = everyone buys game
split screen = only half the people need to buy it

but as always, just my opinion

Not at all.
Just because my friend owns a game with split screen doesn’t mean I won’t buy.
If anything it will make me want to buy it more if it’s a decent game.

The only way your theory would come into play is if it’s a single player only game and we happen to beat the game in one sitting on co-op and thus there’s no reason for me to buy it.
But if the game is more multiplayer focused with a co-op campaign it’s an awesome feature. A good example is Gears of War. I played the single player co-op at my friends went out the next day bought it and we played online all the next night. I’m sure it’d work the same way with Brink. They key is not to add guest support, which I admit is rather annoying but from a buisness position it seems like a good idea. That way they can play the game co-op with bots but if they want to get to the meat of the game they both have to own it. Kind of similar to what they’re starting to do with the whole with holding free dlc thing.

ditto.

What did you mean about the free dlc?

(ThunderWank) #18

Certain compaines are trying to beat out the whole used games market as it makes a huge cut in thier sales.
One of the ways they plan to go about doing this is with holding vital parts of the game as free DLC.
A code will be available in every box to download said DLC however but people who buy the game second hand will have to pay to download it.

What’s worse is that it’s already starting, a prime example is Dragon Age and the stone prisoner DLC.
Free if you bought it new but 15 bucks if you got it used.

Still though I understand their motives as annoying as it is.
Worst part is that if they do use this I’ll have to clean out my Hard drive when ever I get a new game…

(Nail) #19

If you go to a buddies house because he has a great new game and you like it, you’re likely to buy it even without split screen so I don’t see that as justification. Like I said it’s a very cool feature but not a game breaker or maker imho. IW makes co-op games rather than immersive games because the majority of buyers don’t play online. For an essentially multiplayer online game like Brink, which has a single player component I can’t justify the time/expense it entails. Mind you, I’m a PC gamer.

(tokamak) #20

Most of the Gamecube games I’ve bought were because I couldn’t get enough of playing them over at friends. This wasn’t really the case of games that didn’t allow this.
