Brink Needs Heavier Marketing!

(ryryelectro) #1

Hey,

I was registering @ a couple of forum boards trying to spread the word of BRINK until I came across this one thread called “Games for 2011” where users state their top choices of games to look out for in 2011. In 90% of those posts, BRINK was not present, but rather ****ty choices like “Homefront” and “MW3”. I think this forum was either Gamespot forums or IGN or Filefront forums (the mainstream-type forums). The picture that I conceive is that these users do not even know about BRINK. This is among the mainstream gamers; obviously with the competitive players and other niche markets, BRINK is getting quite the hype.

Ultimately, from a consumer’s perspective, I feel there needs to be more marketing geared towards mainstream gamers.

thats true.
i made couple of articles to promote brink
for example, search google most wanted FPS game in 2011

if its brink most wanted or not, i dont care. for me, its n.1 game. most wanted.
(now i need to know who reedited official brink wiki page ;p and removed this article lol)

I agree. Trailers all around! :stuck_out_tongue:
But hey, atleast they have guys like me who are buzzing around like a PR-person.

PS: Bethesda needs to get some Brink items to TF2 as a promotion.

i work at gamestop and we have been pushing the crap out of Brink and we have a good amount of preorders so far, however the majority of people still dont know what Brink is until we tell them about it and than their eyes light up like a kid on christmas

Now come on guys, we all know that the Brink release dat is still very far away. You can’t expect them to start marketing now they will lose momentum.

(Mustkunstn1k) #6

Yeah, obviously the biggest push comes close to release. But still, look at LA Noire or even Witcher 2. They now come out a week after Brink and while they also don’t have a huge push then I have seen a lot more trailers about those games. So far Brink has only had 2 big trailers (lately) those 2 have had more imho.

brink release date is far away? year ago was late for brink promotions!

Let’s assume for sake of argument that Brink will:

  1. Get good to great word of mouth once released. This is what happened just from the PAX East version as well as seemingly everyone who has had a chance to play the game.

and

  1. Brink will get generally positive reviews that put it at a Metascore of 85. I know critics/reviewers can be a fickle and odd lot so trying to estimate the score before I have played the game is at best slightly better than pulling a number out of my ass, but for the sake of this argument I want a better than average number, and my attempts to curb my fanboism won’t let me “guess” at a higher number.

So good word of mouth and a metascore of 85 would certainly help put this game at Borderlands level which for a new IP is not a bad place to be. Is this enough for a successful new franchise, or do you think that Bethesda needs to do more heavy marketing prior to May 10, or just capitalize on positives after the release?

If the Metascore were closer to 80 would that make a difference in your views? Or what if it were closer to 90?

(Whydmer) #9

I haven’t seen very much in the mainstream about Witcher 2.

(xTriXxy) #10

sorry for stupid Q but metascore is based or calculated from what?

(tokamak) #11

Magazine reviews.

(Whydmer) #12

Full answer is that it is from the site www.metacritic.com and they assign a 1-100 value to reviews from contributing websites and magazines. A 4 out of 5 star review will net about an 80 on their site. They then take all the review scores and I assume give a weighted average to get a “metascore”.

A poor “metascore” can break a game/movie/other new release or at least hamper future sales. THQ’s stock dropped a number of points I believe after Homefront got a metascore of 70.

By comparision W:ET earned a 90 and ET:QW earned an 84 at Metacritic. So my estimate above is maybe, truely conservative…?

Witcher 2 has a pretty good word of mouth though, especially in the demographic that its targeting.

(ultraddtd) #14

I expect we’ll start to see more ads in the next few weeks.

Also, the advertising is pretty well out there on the gaming sites. Brink has been a featured ad on the IGN homepage for about a month now.

(LyndonL) #15

Hehe I can’t believe people didn’t pick up the sarcasm in Tokamak’s post, but took it seriously. Good ol’ Toka

30 days to release… I agree… AMP IT UP!

(Nail) #16

it kinda worries me Bethesda is hyping Rage more than Brink at this time
don’t want to see an Actifail on Brink

(MummyCigarette) #17

The word of mouth on this game is amazing. Some ads wouldn’t hurt though.

(Seyu) #18

We don’t really need to worry about this, I am sure Bethesda and Splash Damage are more concerned about Brink’s success than anyone else.

True, that game is all set to be a big success, it’s bold approach to mature themes set it apart from the competition, especially since Dragon Age 2 turned out to be a damp squib. Heck, I’ll be buying it myself.

(15% or more) #19

I don’t think it’d be unreasonable for the creators of Brink to buy up some spots on TV right now. I mean, 5-10-11 is less than a month away.

Look at movies… sometimes they advertise those a full year before they come out and they still seem to do well. I remember the first Spider-Man movie was advertised 15 months before release. Ridiculous, yes, but I think that proves my point.

(DouglasDanger) #20

It isn’t up to the creators, it is up to publishers. Splash Damage made Brink, Bethesda is publishing it.
