BRINK is not ET

(ailmanki) #1

but it might be a successor?
I really like ET, I play already to long time… and still playing it.
The only reason are the various maps and its gameplay.

In my humble opinion, Quake-Wars does not reach the quality of ET in means of fun & gameplay. Sure QW has excellent features for Clans and competitive games… But for public servers with random peoples its not.
I hope SD will reconsider there roots, even though I have no clue about them… :expressionless:

In any case surely what makes ET being on top of Games being played is its attractivity for so called public servers, and that it ain’t to difficult to extend/modify.

PS, will there be :stroggtapir: in BRINK ?
PS2, somehow I have no doubt - that BRINK will be great - wierd.

(Joe999) #2

no, it isn’t and i hope it will never be and i hope SD will never consider their “roots” (whatever that is) and instead make a new unique game. QW is a true successor to ET and you don’t like it. so if you want to play ET, then you should play ET. there’s nothing wrong with it

i have a question though: how would you define a “successor” to ET? how would it look like?

(tokamak) #3

I don’t think I can add much more to Joe999’s post. Both W:ET and QW are awesome, I just don’t play W:ET anymore because it’s hard to find a server that hasn’t been degenerated by heaps of modifications (that’s why I’m a big supporter of ranked servers, it protects the core gameplay).

Think of it in cooking terms. SD can make many different types of cake, they can all taste different, some you’ll like some you won’t. It requires the same skills and care to make them all though and that IMO is the mark of a truly successful Dev team.

Of course if SD really did make cake I doubt it’d ever manage to leave their offices. Thankfully games aren’t edible.

ET is the best and will always stay the best. It’s gameplay is just unbeatable. The teamplay you need/have to do objectives is thé key of the game.

Why do you think still so many people play it?

(tokamak) #6

Well certainly not to complete the objectives these days… It’s all about bodycounts, accuracies and k/ds.

(Paul) #7

“not to complete objectives these days” - On servers where I play (2.55) 7/10 times allied team wins so they must do objectives then

(DarkangelUK) #8

What’s the point of doing a remake if the best is already there for all to play? Brink is it’s own game.

(tokamak) #9

Damn, I wish I could find those servers myself.

(BioSnark) #10

not a universal opinion :o

(deadlights) #11

Yes BRINK will stand alone, and we all hope it will be just as great. Just remember this when we make comparisons on the forums… BRINK is not ET.

(-SSF-Sage) #12

That only means that axis does not defend. Playing objective on pub means most of the times that there’s one team to attack and other team to frag.

I already asked that hundred times but no answer to my question :frowning:

(ailmanki) #14

remaking ET makes no sense for SD IMHO … they have planted the seed … ET is growing… maybe give it some water … or dunno - but replanting it… lol?

@Joe999, it is a “successor” to ET, once I play it instead of ET
how would it look like, well thats secondary for me, having seen pics from ID’s next title I hope its along that…
But the graphics don’t matter much… as long as basic concepts are kept, like first person, a crosshair … no that fancy over shoulder cam…

@tokamak, the many modifications and additons to ET are the reason I still play it,
new maps, new mods, new weapons, new skins, new sounds … it keeps the game alive.
Sadly enough the only way to find out what a server has all installed is joining it and discovering it.
Well - depending on server browser you know a bit more.
I think Ranked Server are a step in correct direction but not the ultimate solution, there needs to be more flexibility for Server Administrators and a way for Clients to know about those flexible changes before hand - and in best case to filter them… even better with some kind of preview. Then you would love it - I bet.

PS: if ET would be only about killing I wouldn’t play it … not to forget the chat ingame … hehe

i’m sorry, but this doesn’t make any sense and it sounds like the common thinking when people say that they want a successor to ET, but it should be like ET and in fact be ET

sth being a successor only if you play it is a very personal point of view. and quake wars is a first person shooter, has a crosshair, etc, just like many other fps games.

i rephrase my question because we seem to have a different understanding to “how would it look like”: what features would classify a game for you, that it’d be a successor to ET?

(xXHugDangerXx) #16

Slightly off topic, but as well as establishing Brink as its own original game (not an ET clone) the PR people need to do their part in establishing that this will not be the next Elder Scrolls or Fallout 3. I have noticed a great amount of confusion in peoples comments on many media sites involving Bethesda being the publisher (i guess people confuse Developers and Publishers).

(DarkangelUK) #17

Yes I completely agree, but as long as they equally disassociate it as the next ET as well. Obviously because it’s not, and also because there will be massive rage from the ET community if they think it is, then find it’s not when it’s released.

(Exedore) #18

Both ET and Elder Scrolls/Fallout have generally positive reputations, so it’s no surprise that the public imaginations have been allowed to stipulate things unfettered. There will be more concrete information in good time, and there’s still a good bit of time before Spring next year!

(tokamak) #19

Yes. thanks for reminding us :frowning:

(ailmanki) #20

what features would classify a game for you, that it’d be a successor to ET?

SD made with ET some kind of universe, where a mapper can come and make a small world in it, not onyl limited to geometry, there can also be a game logic, stuff moving, without the need of using a complex language as C. Well mapscripting already can get quite far.
This mixed with a similar precision to Quake 3 in aiming and movement, and an arcade style game in contrary to simulations which are very realistic.
And a lot of quality mappers which made excellent artworks, they play a very important role in the success of ET.
QW has actually most if not all of ET, but it more simulation style then arcade in my opinion - thats why I don’t like it.
What would I love to see?
Same as ET and QW had, plus some RPG factor this all for as many players as possible at once in Arcade style…
SD has some experience with Fallout 3… maybe they get the best of that and mix it with the gameplay of ET… there are various possibilities… big potential.
I have actually only saw a short trailer with some pics of BRINK and listened to an interview… the part I understood sounded good…
