BRINK Graphical Cvars (Explanation for their limitations?)

(INF3RN0) #1

So I for one am growing greatly annoyed with having to play Brink with constant frame rate lag, and although I understand many of these problems are under patching examination, there is still a problem here. Why is there such a strict limit on the graphical tweaking options in Brink? Surely this is an incredible set back in comparison to ETQW, where performance could be drastically boosted with ease thanks to the variety of cvars. There had to have been some reasoning behind why Brink was released in a state where it could only be downgraded to what appears to be medium graphics. On top of that there are very few options to help stabilize frame rates. I would greatly appreciate a response from a SD rep on this subject as to whether or not we can expect more graphical tweaking options in the next patches rather than having to wait for the game to be fully optimized so that it has to be played at higher settings. This is really the most pressing issue for the game at this time, and things like r_skippostprocesses (disabling glow aura) has proven to double fps. Why can’t we simply have access to disabling things like this? I don’t expect Brink to be the game I wanted, but I would at least like to be able to run it with more than an average 20fps (considering I got 120fps in etqw on all high settings). All those customization options, but I can’t configure the game itself to run the way I want, and I am not at all referring to exploitative graphical tweaks if someone tries to bring that up… I need to be able to run the game or it’s going away.

If your a player who agrees with this, please bump to get this on the priority list please.

Agreed. Or in game voting language: F1.

Agree, it would be nice to just have an in game low setting that gives most FPS even if it makes the game look fugly. And by all means put a warning every time you start the game that the graphics are on minimum etc so people don’t forget they asked for this.

I found switching r_shadows 0 helped stabilise my fps to 30-45 over the previously stuttery 20-30. I still get FPS lag though <10 FPS but that might be my PC screwing me over rather than the game.

(Ino) #4

options are always welcome, so I’m all for it. I don’t need it, but I really don’t understand why those cvars are blocked.

(INF3RN0) #5

Anyone from SD able to respond to this?

(NeoRussia) #6

yes, and why are cvars like zoom sensitivity, demo recording, and dof disabling also locked? Makes no sense.

(Trypsinogen) #7

I’ve been browsing this forum a lot in the past few days and I haven’t seen a single SD post.

You would think that they would hire a friggen community manager or something seeing how badly this game is doing and how many complaints there are against it.

(Neo_Bahamut_19) #8

Chances are they won’t respond. I have yet to see them respond to a single post regarding any issue unless it’s in a thread they themselves created. At which point responses are still rare.

Why is there such a strict limit on the graphical tweaking options in Brink?

Same reason as all the other limitations. Consoles.

(INF3RN0) #10

I mean when you claim that your developing the game separately on all platforms, you would assume there was some truth to it…

(Kurushi) #11

Agree with OP. I don’t want picmip 5 but some of the fancier stuff is killing my frame rate. I would like to see a lot of cvars remained locked for obvious reasons.

OT: SD are pretty good to us on these forums so don’t take it for granted they respond at all. Too many trolls too little time

Let em get on with it

(Nail) #12

cvars may be locked while they iron out bugs to keep everyone equal for now, but netvars should allow changes once playability has been fixed

(Kebyh) #13

Agree with OP.

(Murderous Pie) #14

Ima bump this thread

(ceya) #15

seems kinda reasonable…

However, I’d like to see some more graphical cvars unlocked soon. Playing with 20-30 fps isn’t fun :frowning:

(INF3RN0) #16

If that is the reasoning, I would love some confirmation from a SD dev. Personally I am afraid that they locked off all that stuff based on a similar course of decision making influenced by common forum QQing in ETQW. By this I mean they took all the ignorant whine from forum dwellers who call graphical tweaking to get better frame rates “cheats” and took it to heart… that would be uber luls. There is a big difference between removing glow, pretty sky, etc in order to run a game than say… a wall hack??? (yea people are that dumb).

(Nail) #17

they’ve asked server admins to run default settings up to a point as well, methinks once a couple problems get sorted they’ll let us loose again

(ceya) #18

bump!

a confirmation from SD on this would be nice

(jazevec) #19

Character customization options had to come from somewhere ! They were added at the cost of real, meaningful customization. How ironic.

As far as I know there never was a zoom sens var in idtech4 I tried searching for it for Quake4 but came up empty so used scripts to adjust my sens when I zoomed in.
