actually if he went to the xbox 360 forums ad begged for one of those day membership cards someone would pass him a code.
BRINK DLC to come in July, won't be free?
To be honest if it is true that the DLC will only be free to those who already have the game in those 2 weeks then this is very bad news and sets a dangerous precedent. Its all very well saying that those who have played since launch should get the DLC while those who have not should not but what about the longevity of the community?
In months to come our existing players or clan members may stop playing for any reason, you need new players to keep the community and clans alive. The DLC not being free and the fact that future DLC’s will most likely cost money for everyone will act as a huge barrier to new players and divide the community.
Maps should never cost money and the reluctance to release the SDK most likely means paid for DLC’s are planned. Its even hinted at in the fact that the first one is free to existing players which implies it wont be free in the future.
Seriously current steam stats put Brink at around 1000 players peak per day. If SD/beth are going down the paid for DLC route then R.I.P Brink which is a real shame, I have played Brink since release and it is a great game with potential but its just getting sad now if its true about the DLC.

if you wont pay for a 5 dollar dlc then why not play with it, just continue to play for the fun of the game?
you arnt missing much but 2 maps. 2 maps wont make a huge difference.
also i wouldnt mind if the PC dlc was free so the PC players would shut up about it
(mainly because it probably will be free for pc players as almost all games on both pc and 360, 360 gets charged dlc pc gets it free)

The point is even if I buy the maps (which I wont out of principle) many other people wont buy them or new players will buy the game and not have the DLC. What you effectively have is a 2 tier system. Those with the DLC and those who do not. Those who can play all the maps and those who cannot.
Not only will it divide the community it will really mess up server map rotations. People will join the server play a map and then if the next map is a DLC only map then potentially lots of people on the server will disconenct.
Server Admins such as myself will be faced with a big problem. Either run all th vanilla maps or run only the DLC maps but not them combined. Its just going to be one huge mess and is not what we need when the community has on average 1000 people playing at the most per day.

those 1000 will all have it, and many many more, many people said they’d be back for dlc, and alotta people might pick it up just cause hey look free update, feel me? compared to how people make it out its a great marketing scheme used by alot of people (EX. here is a car, its a great car, but it has no engine, if you buy a great engine it will be the best race car ever)
and people that do pick this game up and like it, and just paid 30-40 dollars for it probably wouldnt mind chipping in 5 measly dollars to the mix.

I think this is a very optimistic view point to be honest. People are already pissed that the DLC is late you think people are going to stick around for future paid for DLC’s with no promose of an SDK?
there is a good chance, you sir have a very pessimistic view of things.
i dunno about SDKs, but i have heared a very small population would
-
know how to use it
-
care how to use it.
-
use it appropriately
and 4. ever use it.
modders are generally very few, and those that use the pro creations are slightly more tha the modders themselves.

you obviously never played ET because if you had you would know just how much support that game got from the mod community its one of the reasons that its community it still pretty active. The same applies to CS and CS source, those games survived because the mod community was able to support them more than a developer ever will be able to.

Maps should never cost money!?!
Regardless of whether these maps were cut from the original or started from scratch, DLC takes time AND money to introduce to a marketplace! Not to mention balancing, polishing and porting.
This two weeks is a GIFT! So what if the game was not as good as we expected! It still has a very loud community on these forums and SD are showing their appreciation to US. We have a window. If other ppl are waiting for a cheaper priced disc, then that eats into SDs profits. But they have two weeks once dropped to make up their minds.
And this won’t split up the community! PPL who play this game after the campaign is finished actually enjoy it! $5 for DLC of a game you enjoy is nothing. I purchased DLC for the Halo series and Gears Of War series at the drop of a hat.
Mind you, I wish I had never paid for Black Ops First Strike Map Pack! $23.95 here in OZ on the PSN!!! And absolutely ruined the game for me!
I’m no businessman I’ll admit that, but I don’t think this DLC will do too well sold like this, the map packs will splinter an already small amount of people and if they miss the free boat there will be much complaining, and probably lost players.
It is a shame they were pressured in to announcing the DLC early as now there will be Angry Internet Men take personal issue with SD’s conduct further.
The future is free maps + gun type stuff: charge for costumes.
You know it makes sense, and will rake more in the long run guys. It’s the future of making that paper on these types of things! Hell I’ll buy a couple of costume packs and most people would.
Looking forward to these new fixes for netcode (even though it is drastically improved,) now we just have to fix the stupid playerbase!!!

Seriously did everyone just go crazy or something? I am the only one here who remembers what things used to be like 10 years ago? you know when the community developed maps and developers realsed patches and updates for free. Now we should be grateful to have to pay?
Its not a lot of money? Do you know how many people will see you have to buy the maps and will just say forget it? People are seriously pissed off at the launch of Brink and if you have not noticed games like Alien Swarm have more people playing than Brink do at the moment.
You know there’s a problem when the Dawn of War retribution fanbase/player peak is higher than Brink, they need way more than just this dlc to redeem this game.
like listening to the community and releasing a title update in the hopes of improving the gameplay?
i played QW:ET
totally different game, it was specifically aimed to those people, however this game is not.

Well if we are talking about modding in ETQW then one of the reasons why it never really took off is because of the ranked server system. Modding in ETQW was just too difficult and could have been a lot easier. I also played ETQW as well as W:ET.

The patches and updates are still free. Maps, increased levels, new abilities, new costumes, etc. are not. It also might be worth stating that the developers doing that at that time had a lot less business people involved and a lot more gamers/computer people. They’re 2 different mindsets. When it comes to running a successful business which one do you think wins out? The best is probably some combination of the two, but giving your stuff away for free is just plain dumb.
Also at that time selling these products was an untested model so developers and the business people involved at the time were concerned that they would lose players by charging. Guess what they found out? Generally speaking, they won’t. Most people are going to buy the content even if it’s only because they feel obligated to play with that friend who already bought it. That’s why almost every company is doing this now.
Even TF2 is jumping on the bandwagon. F2P? Uh yeah they are going to make a million times as much money as they were before. By itemizing almost every item in the game and putting them up for sale they are putting themselves in such a sweet spot. Sure, players can still earn stuff in game, but Valve didn’t go F2P for the players or because they thought no one was going to pay for items. In recent interviews they even stated one of their goals is to figure out how to make free players pay money/but items (that was in the article on Rock, Paper, Shotgun. Think it’s linked earlier in this thread). They saw a great product that deserved ongoing support that wasn’t bringing in enough money. They just hit the mother load.
On the other end you have the MW3 Elite subscription thing. I personally think that’s going too far. The problem with subbing is that we’re talking a long term monthly investment or in other words another bill. That’s way different than a one time purchase and people are probably going to limit the number of subscriptions they have.
Sorry for perhaps going way out in left field there, but I thought all that was relevant to the discussion. I’m not saying I don’t wish all this stuff was free. That would be awesome. It’s just not realistic. Nothing in life is free especially since the world economy went down the tubes. Also, it’s not a lot of money I don’t think a lot of people can’t afford or won’t shell out $5-$10 to expand on the game experience of a game they enjoy. I’m 28, I have a full time job, it’s not a lot of money for me and really anyone that I know.
On another note remember when they didn’t release patches, updates, or DLC at all and you just had to suck it up and deal with the product as is?

That…
I would love DLC if it was all free too. But I certainly wouldn’t want to be the one slaving over new content, trying to to make a deadline…for free.
Good point about the MW3 subscription service too. Thats going into dangerous territory: Pay To Play. If that successfully takes off I think it is an expensive outlook for all gamers, and the casual market will go out the window.
I don’t think the DLC is the big news, but the update patch that comes with it will be the make or break feature… After the accompanying patch alters weapon balances, server settings etc. then I think this marks the first “final” version of Brink i.e. only minor tweaks required afterwards.
The DLC is intended as a peace offering to those of us that have played through the glitches from day one and they’re giving us a two-week window to claim it for free. It should also pull in a few more players, but the make or break will be if the update patch will give all players a good enough game to want to stay and spread the news via word of mouth.
im sure this will make things better… not
its clear they are more and more after money.

They’re a business. They have employees. The employees work and the business pays them for the work. The business has to make money to continue to function. Otherwise you get no DLCs, patches, updates, SDK, etc.
Why you deserve to get anything for free is something no one has explained.
