..Brink dev says launch was rough, game found success on PC

(tokamak) #21

Indeed, this is a trick you can only pull off once.

(Codine) #22

Brink was a complete failure except for sales probably.

But even then, their reputation was completely shattered so can you still call it a success after losing your rep?

SD really needs to listen to their community if they want to keep this game alive.

There’s only 984 people playing Brink right now. That’s basically the same amount from before the sale. So no, the population Did not increase at all with the new DLC. It spiked because it was free, but then after it was over it died again very quickly.

At this point SD would do a lot better making Brink f2p with a hat shop.

Played with strangers all weekend long.
Made some new friends.
Won some.
Lost some.
Still had fun.
Got my OP up to lvl 23

"Get on the Brink Express. It just keeps chugging along, getting better all the time…

And the other thing is a vast majority of comments on facebook and articles like these are negative about the game. I just point that out because the perception around here is it’s butt hurt players bitching because they didn’t get the game they expected. Yet these comments show that many people just didn’t enjoy the game.
Heres another one…

Brink ‘strayed too far from convention,’ says designer

Interesting quote:
lol, funny quote. he’s painting with a pretty broad (but perhaps accurate) brush - although I’m not sure it was just the teamplay element that hurt brink’s success (that xbox lag was a killer, i bet, and the PSN down had to hurt too)…and last time i checked, COD was pretty popular globally…but i digress…

More importantly, i guess that makes those 'mericans on there here forums that like Brink Un-'merican?

Actually there were far less playing on average before the free weekend, barely even 400 people on average…

all I want to say is :
Meh !

so many server … for just few players …
Our both servers are full tonight but for how long ?
without listening to the community the game can’t find a public

I think BRINK deserves all the support from SD and Bethesda it can get.

As much as it pains me to say, I think BRINK is a nice experiment from and for SD. And I personally don’t mind being the guinea pig for once.

SD has admitted the game isn’t flawless (and perhaps far from it). Which either means SD is actually aware of its flaws, which is a good sign. Or SD is merely echoing the voice of the community to make it seem like they’re listening. And believe me, game developers and publishers tend to do that. Which is a bad sign.

If anything, I want the best for SD, its employees and its fans. And if BRINK helps them learn from mistakes and be able to increase overall quality of their games in the future, good! As of now, I’m not playing BRINK against my will. I’m having damn well fun with it. Not being blind of its mistakes, mind you. But I’m able to enjoy the game just like any other game.

Yes, pretty much like anyone else, I would’ve wanted BRINK to be completely perfect from the beginning as well. Despite that, it’s hard to blame SD for exploring and taking different paths and challenging their talent.

I’m looking forward to future BRINK updates, content, patches and whatever. (Although don’t expect me to buy every ridiculous DLC though) And I’ll definitely be looking forward to future SD titles.

To say BRINK is a success on the PC… well… that’s rather subjective.

(BomBaKlaK) #29

At least they finaly make some money so we hope some fix we deserve !
like custom crosshair and hud ! (just an example maybe since the time I ask, they might forget it ! :p)
and all the basics feature like adjusting the obj mechanic and spawn times to be attack biased and fun to play …

if we can get this maybe we can still have a community who stay on the BRINK.
(and an SDK to !! )

(tokamak) #30

I think the goal is to move the community away from the brink…

(BomBaKlaK) #31

OK ! so they got 95% of succes  I understand better
Do you always have to be so negative? Especially in such a non-constructive way?
And wine is generally sold straight away with some stock held in reserve to mature. Some collectors will purchase it to keep age themselves. But stretching analogies like this to try and make points is just silly.
If you have nothing nice or constructive to say do you really have to try and downer everyone else?

If you don’t like the game that’s fine. I understand you like ET:QW and consider this a step back, but a lot of people here enjoy the game for it’s more casual approaches (amongst other things) and this thread is discussing the article and the possibility of ongoing supprt and changes to the game. If you have something to discuss about it then please, go ahead. But sticking your head in to sulk is acting a bit like an emo teenager.

A post saying “you’re wrong. It sucks” isn’t worth the time it took to post. If you want to elaborate then please do. At the very least link to another thread where you do elaborate on the points relevant to this thread.
To sum this up easily:

(DLC out early June!?) #33

lol…The picture in the article says it all about Brink. Not only do you have one guy with his sack on the ground camping a corner but you have TWO GUYS!

(TwwIX) #34

Success? Is that so?

The only thing that they’ve managed to succeed at is to convince me not to buy any future games developed by them.

(sanDIOkan) #35

success…

probably their job is like the job of restaurant
success is not make the restaurant full … success is make people come back!
every1 is able to make the restaurant full, u just need to make alot of advertising and give food for free BUT not every1’s able to make people come back!

YES!

uhhh… then you’re only proving that they’ve failed.

For a new IP in the FPS genre Brink is doing pretty well. The gerne is flooded with sequels and clones that don’t have much in the way of fresh ideas. The few new titles that do come out get a spike of play and then get dropped. It’s difficult to name any FPSs that have done really well that aren’t sequels or somehow connected to an established franchise. The only ones I can think of off the top of my head is Borderlands and L4d (both getting a little old now).
I’ve played a few good FPSs (and even 3rd person shooters) recently that should have done well, but the community came in. Played a few weeks / a couple of months and then left to go back to CS /CoD / established brand that makes them feel comfortable and that all they’re friends play.
If your friends don’t play a game it doesn’t matter how good it is you’ll eventually drop it to play with your friends in something else.

Could Brink do better? Yes. Is the game perfect? No. Is it doing well for a fresh IP? I’d say it’s not doing too bad and if SD continue to support and grow it then it could have some staying power.
If they learn from their mistakes and make a Brink 2 in the future it could be fantastic.

I don’t think it is as bad as some people try make it out to be, nor do I think it is as good as some people try make it out to be.
It’s all opinions and people value the game differently based on their own experiences. To me it’s a fun casual shooter that tries some interesting things and I’m happy to boot it up every now and then when I feel like a MP FPS.

(Metal-Geo) #38

I hope you don’t mean literally. A BRINK 2 would be a pisser and a waste of time. Instead, they should just improve BRINK and hopefully bring back some of the early quitters. And make the free weekends more frequent as well.

(Nexolate) #39

I don’t think so. There are some things that you simply can’t add via updates and DLC, they fundamentally change the game.
Those are the kinds of things I’d like to see a Brink 2 for.

Regards,
Nexo

(zenstar) #40

I don’t mean any time in the near future. I mean after Brink has run its course. There’s still plenty they can do for Brink and I hope they do a lot for it.
But I also hope there’ll be a Brink 2 in the future at some point and if there is it’ll hopefully build on Brink while incorporating all the (positive and negative) feedback to make a better game.

That’s all I meant.
