Brightness reset

(Bokkem) #1

Sometimes during a game ET loses my brightness settings and the screen turn real dark. It happens very often after ALT+TAB [correction ALT+ENTER] or Minimize (etmin.exe). Is there a solution to this, or could anybody tell me what the console command is for brightness, so that I can put a set in my .cfg file ? My brightness setting is 1.50. TIA!

I dont know if that etmin.exe is somekind of utility u got…but it sounds like it turns off externalgamma (r_ignorehwgamma “1”) probally to prevent brightness distortion when in windows during windowed mode.

Anyways, my way to minimize/maximize ET is pressing Alt+Enter. (not alt+tab?)

There has been alot of talking on these forums about ET “resetting” some variables, and i did kinda find the solution for the problem, but i think its too complicated in this situation…what u really want is to make your self a little “startup”-scriptfile (cfg)

a cfg is basically a text file…so create a mysetup.txt file…and simply rename it to mysetup.cfg (yeah, many ways to do it, figure it out) In that file u should put all the variables that u want to be in control of… pretty much as many as u want… in this
situation you’d want to put in these vars:

//

seta r_gamma “1.8”
seta r_ignorehwgamma “0”
seta r_intensity “1.5”

bind F9 “exec mysetup.cfg”

//

note: if u run r_ignorehwgamma “0” u will be able to set game brightness var (r_gamma) without restarting video in game.

Im sure if u keep playing ET ull want to use this approach to manage your controls and game setup.

Thanks for your detailed reply. It did not solve my problem but…you gave me enough hints and tips so that I was able to solve it myself :drink:

I rewrote your script so that it could fit in my autoexec.cfg and that I could toggle the brigtness with a push on a key. While trying your script I found out that the brightness value needs to be changed first, before you can restore it to the old setting.

This is how the toggle script looks like:

set videoreset “vstr video_mode1”
set video_mode1 “r_gamma 1.5; r_ignorehwgamma 0; set videoreset vstr video_mode2”
set video_mode2 “r_gamma 1.6; r_ignorehwgamma 0; set videoreset vstr video_mode1”
bind F9 “vstr videoreset”

Like with every solution, it’s very simple - but I couldn’t have done it without your help.
Thanks a lot mate!

BTW: etmin.exe is a tool that enabled you to minimize ET by pressing ALT+Z. Very handy.

hey…puzzled with the thing with all this “ET resetting stuff” issue… and to me it looks like theres one file who controls them all thats the one in :

/etmain/profiles/yourname/etconfig.cfg <-- the one in etmain…regardless mod

i tried with ETpro…and it seems if i need to change some variables that normally needs vid_restart…or completely shut down and restart of game, i need to be sure that my variables are in that file… (this seems to be the file ET starts up on EVERY time (regardless MOD)…then again when mod loads it loads the mod specific profile mod…BUT…its only the vars that does not need restart that will change (binds,cg_vars,stuff)

An example would be com_hunkmegs, normally in RTCW you would be able to just type /com_hunkmegs 256 and then vid_restart…but now u have to restart game completely to get it set… and to get it stored, and used as preference.

I have,…started ETgame (normal mode/ no mod) exec my setup (containing all the vars)…and make sure all my variables are stored in my /etmain/profiles/yourname/etconfig.cfg (check after u closed the game, that the vars have been stored, or else manually edit it)…after that, simply copy it around to the other folders, and overwrite existing etconfig.cfg’s

now if u want some specific binds in ETpro only…then you would add the bind changes only to the etpro/profiles/yourname/etconfig.cfg.

dunno if this has any interest…but i managaed somehow (during test)…to run etpro without having any specific profile selected… (didnt create one trough normal ET, but deleted profile folders…and launched game with pathfinder/ASE)…but thats another story…and probby not of any use…

…and a little offtopic since the problem is already solved

you THINK your problem is solved…

(Bokkem) #8

Sure, it’s a workaround - but it’s fine with me!
Good luck with your rootcause analysis, but don’t waste too much time over it

(squadjot) #9

hehe…well actually i dont do this for your sake but for my own… guess nobody is interested, so ill just keep it to myself then :stuck_out_tongue:

(nobody interested, UNTIL they come and whine over their problems, and u have to explain it all over again)

(Retardical_Sam) #10

I had this exact same problem, and it seems to have been fixed by setting r_ext_gamma_control to 0.

(Retardical_Sam) #11

Never mind, it didn’t actually fix it. =( It did make the delay longer though.

Im experiencing this same issue my self. No idea what causes this but i recall that it didnt used to do this in the past.
Anyone have ideas whats causing this? Its really annoying.

Ive got AMD 2600+, Radeon 9600xt, 512mb ram etc.
Probably something to do with ati drivers or something…

(Red|Cell) #13

yeh if u dont have the correct ati driver the screen will go dark on a lot of games u play if u minmize the game or something comes up on the screen like msn.

not saying that is the prob but it was for me on all my games :frowning:

(Mystiqq) #14

I fixed the issue by using the hotkeys to adjust the ATI brightness control when the screen goes black, that seemed to work. Defaults are CTRL+F1 / F2 for gamma and CTRL+F3 / F4 for brightness…
They are listed in the ATI panel -> Color -> hotkey

Cheers…
